CU i like your posts but no No NO on this one. Seneca scored some points - and we needed points - but we were NOT a better TEAM for it. If Seneca got it in the paint he became a black hole and he saw nothing else & thought nothing else but a bucket attempt.

Somebody mentioned it before, but as poor as we played today - I have a feeling we're going to give Drake a game. Or maybe that's the delusion from the cold speaking.
If we play our A+ game and Drake their D game, Drake by 10.

it’s not just the shooting, Birds are playing defense with 5’s jump switching on the perimeter and forcing Banks, Kinziger, Burford to guard bigs on the block; they don’t value FT shooting enough to shoot better than the 50%; the offense simply doesn’t create shots- almost every 3 was on the move tonight and even when Foster gets it on the block, they can triple him cause they know it’s not getting kicked back.

I didn’t see a lack of effort before he pulled everybody- it really feels like the system just isn’t putting players in a position to succeed, it’s not giving them great looks that they are missing, they are missing difficult shots for the most part. On the defensive end, we are still many times just to small to match up if Lewis or Foster are out and the way we play defense doesnt help it(watched Valpo bigs drop time and time again without giving up either great shots or mismatches tonight), teams we play aren’t just that good. This Birds team can be better, it can’t get better players for this year and unless there is a draft choice I don’t know about, playing freshman “for the future” doesn’t make sense in a portal world, if they continue to lose, it will get harder in the future- what I’m opposed to is continuing to do the same thing and expect different results, time to evaluate offensive and defensive playbooks.

The problem is everyone knows that we can't make a 3 and they will do everything to take the interior game away.
Funny. A complete 180. I have faith, though. Pedon fixed the interior. He will fix the deep threat.

With this unexpected loss today, we may realistically not reach last year’s 11 win total. A sobering thought to be sure but check the remaining games......

+100...play the most capable players, regardlless of class, now. if any of the frosh end up being any good they more than likely will be wearing a diiferent jersey by the time they start their junior season . the portal nil combo almost guarantees it

You would hope so. However they were 40th in the country in 21-22 for 3pt %, then 209 last year, and obviously we all know 345ish this year.

It’ll be a small task to improve it, but a big task to ‘fix’ it.

Such good insight in your whole post.

If I had to choose one sentence in any post, from the last year and a half, to sum everything up after 50 games...this is it and I am right with you.

Reminds me when ISU football had one of the worst defenses in FCS early in Spack’s tenure. He fixed it real quick. Pedon better do the same or he’s gone. We need some major portal additions and that means letting some guys walk.

If ISU goes backwards in wins this season compared to last season, then the powers that be need to realize that this choice in management was the wrong choice. Next person up. I understand people will say ISU will not be able to attract talent, etc if we make the switch but ISU is not attracting the basketball talent on the court. You will have plenty of people interested in the job. Bunch of seniors will be leaving after next year, good time to try out another potential winner.
Who knows they may turn it around but if body language is any indication then it looked like you have players that are just trying to survive as a NCAA division 1 basketball player. Lots off dribbling around, poor shot selection, etc. Unfortunately it may get worse before it gets better. ISU just got beat on it’s own floor by the last place and until yesterday winless team in the conference. Better start putting eyeballs on coaches in lower division one conferences and division 2&3. We need someone who knows how and what it is to win. What ISU showed yesterday was that it did not know or could not figure out how to win.

Problem is with the next man up is we can't afford to really do that, at some point we are just kind of stuck. We are still paying Muller and where $6 million short on the indoor. ISU athletics doesn't have the money rolling in to where I wonder how far Brennan and Kinzy set ISU back. At some point we might be left with what we have. I am rooting for Pedon bc he's a nice guy and trying in the community but we really don't have the funds for another 2 year payout

Vicious circle. We are bad so people are mad and stop coming and stop donating "to make a point" and then wonder why ISU won't get rid of a coach early or do something else. We did that, we owe him $6 million. If donations and fans stop coming in, then it will take longer to pay that off. Then you can't make another move somewhere.

We don't fully know, but most think it's because of the Lieb injury and that it could be longer than we thought.
I was surprised to see Brandon yesterday and his large whole leg brace. He looks to be out a while to a good long while. If I didn't know better (and I don't, I missed any updates on him), I'd think he was out for the year.

The Shot Doctor is available. Gary Close, former assistant at Stanford, Iowa and Wisconsin:

I went to a week long ShotDoctor shooting camp back in the day

Anybody go to Dick Baumgartner's basketball shooting camp in Indiana? "Pop it up and get it going, baby."

Now it's just play play play play. The athletes are as athletic as ever. The basketball, imo, sure is DUMBER though.

"The 5 man substitution in the 2nd half...Ryan should have stuck with it longer. Maybe much longer. IMMEDIATELY the first possession the ball is moving much better and the players are moving. It goes in to Schmitt and he makes an excellent post move. He didn't convert but it was one of our best possessions of the game. Then we cut the lead in half - and he starts subbing again."

This moment here frustrated me .. the group on the floor were in sync pretty quick, ball movement, energy, started scoring, cut the lead in half, then a time out, Pedon subs Davis for Schmidt, played good defense still, Davis gets the ball, does not see or look for a teammate, runs down, takes a shot, misses, that in sync thing I mentioned, evaporated immediately. That small disruption was all it took. I don't know what the relationship between Schmidt & Pedon is, head scratcher. Schmidt was fine in that short amount of playing time. Yes he attempted a 3, I'm ok with that, he has shown he can make them. I'd rather have Schmidt taking those over Foster, Lieb, etc.. I feel bad for the kid, what message does pulling a Freshman's redshirt half way through the season to have that kid play less than Lieb minutes over Schmidt. I'm sure there is more to this than I know, god, in away I hope there is.

Here is what you are missing… the fact that both our football team and men’s basketball team have been dismal for seven years yet we win the “highly coveted” MVC all sports trophy (now +3 years) shows ISU athletics is clueless about priorities and resources. Pedon is right about changing the culture but the bigger issue is the overall athletic strategy needs to be fixed first.

As for Pedon I am starting to believe he may be genuinely too nice of a guy to be successful.

Football isn't taken into consideration for the the MVC all-sports trophy. MVC and MVFC are 2 completely different conferences.
