I've been touting Romine for the last year. He was a late bloomer, came on strong his last year of high school...YES I have seen him play, he's bulked up substantially in the last several years. I'm not saying he's a superstar. What I am saying, if he's healthy in body mind and spirit...he'll be a significant contributor for us. He may have lost the edge, though. We won't know until winter.

Totally totally TOTALLY rooting for the kid. If that makes any of you fellow peeps unhappy, well then BITE me, buckaroos. Still friends?

Disappointed for David because I believed he could be a very effective spot player for us with this current group. No question his minutes would reduce, but he'd be part of a great team (hopefully). Sounds like all parties are satisfied with the result, though, so we move forward. Perhaps addition by subtraction in this case.

Best of luck to King David. My favorite part about his contribution was always his attitude and effort. He'd be the first to huddle up the guys in good times and bad. You never saw him hang his head despite multiple injuries, inconsistent PT, and shaky on-court results.

He struggled often and didn't progress as much as we would have liked, so maybe he'll get more PT elsewhere and maybe we'll use that scholarship on another post guy. Probably a win-win.

:text-+1: Agreed. Always seemed like a good kid who just enjoyed playing the game. I wish him well! But I hope they have learned their lesson with using 2 scholarships to get a project like that.

It would be interesting to see if our men's team would cut any scholarships, as our women's team just cut 5.

I put this in the thread about the 5 players being cut, but I believe the men's team has done something like this with "cutting" players before, Muller just didn't call it that. I always appreciate when a spade is called a spade, Muller often tries to save face for himself and his players. Coach G on the women's side blatantly said she cut those players.

I assume Kaza Keane, Will Ransom, Mike Middlebrooks, Jamaal Samuel, Zach Lofton, Mark Hall, Johnny Hill, Bryant Allen, DJ Clayton, and Nick Banyard were all "cut" for one reason or another. I'm sure there's more we are forgetting. Muller just never used the word. He would either cite violation of team rules for the decision or not mention it at all and say something like, "(Player) is transferring to be closer to home, seek more PT, or find a better fit. We wish him the best of luck in the future."

Not sure about the others but fairly sure Hill left on his own.
Hill was the only player I ever noticed Dan benching due to a technical, in one of Dan’s famous choose to lose games. When building culture, why would only Hill be disciplined in this manner? Makes a good case that Hill was “run off” the team by Muller.

I will see if I can find the article that makes me think the way I do. If I find it I'll post it.

Romine, heading into the '17-'18 season, could play. He was set to be a starter. HE CAN PLAY.

But...I have no idea where his physical and/or mental capabilities stand today, given the previous 9 months. If he's the same player he was a year ago, he'll be a big contributor.
I’m anxious to see what Romine does with David’s minutes. That bar is pretty low, so almost anything will be an upgrade.

curious about the wording in Jim's tweet. "Illinois State has granted a release..." does that mean David asked for the release? or is it an optics thing where this looks better than "Illinois State will not renew the scholarship" or something along those lines.

My bet is he was told during the end of season interviews with the coaches he would see very limited playing time with Romine and Idowu playing. David probably decided he would rather play his final season to get some stats so he can continue as an overseas player.

And when is Hein’s meeting scheduled? Copeland and Jefferson better be eating all Hein’s minutes.

Johnny Hill made a basketball decision for emotional reasons once before.

Looking back now at age 23, the point guard says his choice to leave Illinois State for Texas-Arlington in 2013 is one he regrets. Now that Hill has chosen to transfer again for his final year of eligibility, he's doing the same due diligence on interested programs that their coaches are doing on him.

Must have missed that. Any link?
So ISU was 1 win from the NCAA tourney and our own possible final 4 run, and Muller makes the coaching decision to sit a starter? Another choose to lose decision? He was hired to win. Nice guy finishes last again. He might want to go gor it once while he still has the job

I never put much stock in reasons people give for leaving. Mostly politically correct bullshit being spread around.

No it wasn't a choose to lose. How would you feel if your kid had an issue but the last 4 games of the year the coach said screw it I need him and cost him a year of eligibility? It isn't just a missed year of basketball either. It is a year to have to pay his own way to get his master's. And btw screwing over a player for own personal gain gets around.

Or you could just admit that you were talking out your fart box on this one...

I want to say it was the game where he shoved the player into the scorers table, but I'm not 100% on that one.
