Perennial NIT team with at least 3 NCAA tournaments per decade. 18-12 doesnt cut it. To be in the MVC and be a perennial NIT team you need to be 22-8 to ensure an NIT at-large. 20-10 doesnt even guarantee an at-large to the NIT anymore for the MVC. Sure, you can get in with a worse record if you finish first in your conference regular season but miss the NCAA tournament. Anything less then fire the coach and keep trying until we get it right. In mid-majors you cannot settle for mediocrity. 18-12 might be a .600 win percentage but it does nothing but get you into the CBI and you might as well just stay home if thats the case.
I don’t want an occasional NCaa bid just by catching lightning in a bottle at the Lou with an 17-12 record either.
I would like to be in the top 25 conversation yearly, an average of 23 wins, a packed intimidating arena and ....a goddamn identity.
I want some pride back.
This program is an embarrassment to all who wore the jersey before. Muller should be ashamed.

That's pretty much what I said minus the fans although I agree about the fans. 22-8 most years with 3 years being NCAA type years (at-large type years if they don't win in the Lou). Anything less than the occasional 22 win season and you really need to look elsewhere. I realize 22 wins out of 30 is a 73.3% win percentage but that's what it takes in the mid majors to perennially be in the NIT. I know that sounds harsh to fire someone for a 67.7% win percentage but its the reality we live in playing in the MVC. AND, If you want 7,500 fans in the seats every night that IS what it's going to take. With that being said I think new coaches should be given a three year period to build a team to that level.

I agree with everything you and TBS are saying. The issue at hand is that Bloomington/Normal is a front runner community. Many have jumped aboard the Illini band wagon. I’m hoping ISU can right the ship sometime soon.

We have had one, ONE, coach in the Division I era who was above the 66.7% benchmark, and there is much conjecture just how clean that program was:
  1. Smithson (.786)
  2. Stallings (.661)
  3. Donewald (.629)
  4. Jankovich (.619)
  5. Robinson (.602)
  6. Muller (.560)
  7. Bender (.513)
  8. Richardson (.467)
  9. Moser (.432)
There will be a lot of coach turnover here. And, some throwing around that threshold are the same ones fretting about LUC going to the A10, and who is the coach there now? #9

You forgot the caveat. And times are different now. First three seasons don't count. Start counting from there. If they fail from there they're gone. Ein 70% or we move on. That should be the mindset or else status quo because 20-10 gets you nowhere. Don't settle

His first team had Johnny Hill (Purdue), Ziesloft (Indiana), Ekey (Illinois), Zeke Upshaw (RIP) (G League) in addition to Carmichael and Brown. It wasn’t like he was handed an empty deck. Also had Wilkins.

Let me know when we have a team as remotely as talented as that group again. I’m not sure we have anyone that is good enough to transfer to a power 5 program and play right now.

That first year was a sign of the disaster to come. Good enough to almost beat the eventual national champion at Louisville, but poorly coached enough to blow a 19 point lead at home to Wyoming and start off 0-6 in the MVCi

Johnny Hill first transferred to North Texas State before going to Purdue as a grad transfer as I recall.

I could be wrong but I think that was Zach Lofton. You were kind of right...Texas Arlington!
You are wrong. Lofton went to Minnesota, but never played there, then Texas Southern and eventually ended up at New Mexico State.

The Valley was much tougher back then. Outside of maybe 2 teams every year, it’s now a punching bag.

1500 donors for $1000. I am in.

On this topic. I am debating with myself if we truly lack talent or is it coaching the talent. Both fall on the coach. If we lack talent that is his fault. If we have talent and cannot coach it that is his fault too. What do other Redbird fans think?
Save your $1,000 for buying me beers in St. Louis.

Some coaches learn, mature, and become better at their craft like Moser. Others don't...like muller. I'll take Moser over Muller any day of the week.

Reeves and Horne are both way better player’s as Freshman & Sophomore’s than Paris Lee was. If I could go back to your post (and a few of your fellow Redbird and Dan bashers on here) I would probably find you were the same guys saying how bad Paris Lee was, and that we needed to get a point guard to replace him. Furthermore, Howard Fleming Jr is a much better player as a Freshman than Paris Lee was (and PLee ended up as one of the top 10 PG to wear a Redbird uniform). So don’t give me that crap that this team doesn’t have talent, they are just young right now, and they don’t have a Jackie to throw the ball down low to (Mahorcic is getting better, and although he is no Jackie, I think he will be a very good center next season), and they have zero Senior leadership. Any of these three guards are good enough to transfer to a power 5 conference. And as far as that team that Jank left Dan that transferred, I would take any one of these three over any of those that transferred (and you can also through Emon Washington in there).
Dan did not make it to the NCAA Tournament his first season because he was left with no PG, and anyone that knows anything about basketball knows you can’t win without a good PG.
DJ Horne, Antonio Reeves, Howard Fleming Jr, and Emon Washington all have more talent than any player not named Jackie Carmichael or Tyler Brown that Jank left Dan. But you just throw all the crap out there you want, your fellow Dan haters will believe it, and support it.

So are just going to keep saying that Horne and Reeves are going to transfer every year? People said it was a done deal last year and guess what, they are still Redbirds. Can we stop with it? If you have information that's one thing. Assuming because they are good and the team isn't is just lazy.

Parents and advisors read message boards. Spreading rumors about players transferring is a way to hurt the program. That's the intent of some posters -- which is why they do it every year.

Not sure if you are referring to my post. If so, I am not advocating or suggesting Reeves, Horne, Fleming, Washington, or Mahorcic transfer. I am hoping that none of them will be transferring. I’m just stating that they have more talent than any of the players that transferred from Dan’s first team, which Rico made sound like were much better than the player’s we currently have on our roster.

You just like to throw shit out there, don’t you. What proof do you have that Paris improved more from his Freshman year to his Sophomore year than DJ & Antonio have? And that PLee was better his Junior year than DJ & Antonio will be?

Why do you think Fleming is a much better player than Lee was as a freshmen? Stats don’t scream out in Fleming’s favor over Lee. Lee did benefit from playing with more talent his freshmen year.
