The college athletic landscape and the membership and status of the MVC have changed since the last time ISU had to search for a head coach. It will be interesting to see the level and caliber of candidates that express interest and are included in the interview process.

Would be a good choice. Could even get some of the Bloomington/Normal area Illini fans into RBA and show some support.
Had that exact convo this morning with a group of guys who plan to start donating again next season. Not only would Powell be a good option to bring the program back to relevance, but the Illini fans show up. I'd compare it to how Lions fans rooted for Stafford yesterday. The Lions are still their team, but they want to see "one of their own" succeed. I think Powell would bring a boost to attendance.

Powell checks all the boxes for me. Deep Chicago and Illinois ties. Learned under probably the best basketball family in Bryce Drew. Now at Gonzaga with Few. Never being a head coach doesn’t concern me one bit.

Yet every thread turned into the same thing....for years. Yet every one agreed it needed to be done. But every. damn. thread.
I think JJS will always be b!tcher/labeler regardless of the storyline.

He gets his wish, still not good enough.

If the next coach gets us dancing he will be saying not deep enough.

And he is on record saying he still will not root for this squad ("pardon me if I don't get too caught up in rooting on the team").

I was a student during the era where The Home of Champions actually meant something with regards to our basketball team. I yearn for those days to return.

Here's hoping this AD identifies, and secures, the coach that can bring those days back in spades. It's well past time for it to become a reality.

Nope, I am pretty happy with Kyle Brennan and his actions as ISU AD to this point. I am very optimistic he can land a quality coach and we will start winning. If the next coach gets ISU to the dance, I will be buying tickets, airfare and hotels! I would be going bananas.

Was just thinking about this today. I wonder how many P5 assistants even consider ISU now a days.

My question with the Powell rumors are can ISU interview and hire him before the season is over/while the Zags are still playing or do they have to wait until the season is over to announce it while Powell finishes out the season. I'm very intrigued with him as a possibility, think he brings a lot of what you both mentioned. Just curious how the hiring/interview process may plan out.

That I don’t know because you don’t want to distract whatever he’s doing at Gonzaga though I’m sure his agent can make it loud and clear whether he’s interested or not.

I'm fine with Gates, but his roster at CSU has had limited # of Chicago guys. And Florida St. when he assisted there had no Chicago guys. So he may have ties, but doesn't seem to have used them. A little disappointing to me.
Alot of the chicago guys jumped with Jeter to WIU. Had he stayed, he almost had Marquise Kennedy going to FSU instead of Loyola

What about Bryce Drew - former hc at Valpo and Vandy - now hc at Grand Canyon?

He'd probably be a good add, but he is currently making something like 2.71 million a year at GC, so he is way out of our price range.

I might get torched for exposing my Downstate ignorance regarding details about his program, but if we can't land a top Assistant or up-and-coming college head coach.......... the only things that I know about Robert Smith is that he wins championships every year and churns out future NBA players; if given his first college shot, he might have enough loyalty to not make it a stepping stone, and we could probably get him for less than Muller money.

And what better way to quickly rebuild and sustain a program than to harvest some good Chicago players for two or three recruiting asses in a row?

I appreciate that there are good arguments against a HS coach, but..........Will Robinson???

The new coach should be able to recruit, thats obvious. But, we need someone who is innovative and understands how the transfer portal and NIL deals can be used to ISU's advantage. Many here think the TP is the devil, but it's not going anywhere. How can ISU get quality players from the TP?

Also, I would like the coach to come in with a coaching philosophy and target the players who fit in with his system and philosophy. It's obvious our defense has been terrible, so it would be nice if the new coach knows how to put together a defensive scheme, but of course let's not forget about scoring the ball too.
