Who is our next head coach

My preference would be to bring in someone who has head coaching experience already and is having success elsewhere, so that we have less of a cutting their teeth phase when they get here. My preference would be for Dennis Gates who turned around a bad Cleveland St team into winning the Horizon and an NCAA appearance possibly 2 years in a row. Grant McCasland who has done a really good job at North Texas, Ritchie McKay who has had Liberty in the tourney 2 years in a row (would have likely made it the covid canceled tourney as well), John Becker who has done really well at Vermont, or maybe Tommy Amaker from Harvard (not great this year but historically he has had them pretty good).

If we had to dip into the assistant ranks again I'd want someone from an established good coach/program so there is less chance of the cutting their teeth stage, Roger Powell Jr would be a good get (especially with the success that former Few assistants are having right now), Jason Williford from Virginia might not be bad, Alvin Brooks III might not either, or if you could pry him away from Izzo/Michigan State Dwayne Stephens wouldn't be bad either.

No to Roger Powell Jr. last thing we need after Dan is ruining the relationship with any former player and their legacy. No to Collins, No to Powell.
You just don’t give out five year deals unless you know you have the right fit. An NIT bid is a good enough reason to get such an exclusive deal. If Powell wants to interview and realizes this is business- it’s all good!

Really like the Dennis Gates suggestion - huge ties to entire chicagoland/nw indiana area and now even cleveland/detroit area

Looks like he has 4 years left on his contract at 550K each year. His buy out Dans last 2 years and the new coaches salary??????

Whoever the HC will be, I'd be interested to see if we can grab Nick Irvin from WIU as an assistant.

This is my exact thought. I dont want another former player and his family go through the things that Dan and his family are going through. I don't want to tarnish another players/family legacy.

So that’s a hard “NO” to Dana Ford?

If Brownell is let go, you HAVE to at least call him.

Why? He's in a better position as it is. He's right there with Chicago talent and is already in the mvc
UIC being in the Valley probably puts this out of contention. Otherwise, Yak would be a good choice AND might be the kind of guy who could pull Nick Irvin away from WIU. Between those two, we'd have an ironclad pipeline to Chicago and AAU.

I will pass on Yak. Good assistant- but he isn't exactly tearing it up at UIC. We need a type A personality that can make some noise.

I know this is stretch, but it would be nice to have a coach that won't see ISU as a stepping stone...someone where we might stand to have a longtime tenure even if they have some success. Maybe ties to Illinois or the Midwest. Not necessarily an up and comer...maybe a veteran head coach or longtime assistant that might be happy being in Normal and has many connections to other college assistants and high school coaches.

With that said, I'll be fine if Mark Few or Scott Drew wants to apply.
