Could someone please tell Muller to play the 2-3 zone. They do not play a man defense well and should only go to it as a very last resort. They were getting beat playing man in the whole first half vs BYU. They came roaring back in the 2nd half with the zone. Then Muller went back to man and almost lost the game. PLEASE PLAY ZONE.

It’s possible that 100% zone wouldn’t be effective. Switching between M2M and zone forces an adjustment that seemed to benefit the Birds last night. BYU struggled in possessions following a defensive switch. But waiting until down 14 in the 2nd half before going zone, after giving up 15 first half layups seems excessive loyalty to the M2M.

I think you are right there is a time and place in every game to use both. It keeps opposing offenses on their toes. However, the only time I felt our man was completely broken down was when they would double Childs, which left someone wide open under the basket. Childs still score 27 or whatever, so at a certain point, if you wanted to stay man, stop double teaming him. I understand why they happened but the double team on Childs was largely ineffective.

No doubt we should have went to zone sooner. Their zone offense was bad and they only shot like 20% from 3. It should be noted that prior to last nights game, Childs had made like 3 three pointers all season. Last night he went 3 for 5. Teams love to get hot against us.

Muller said that when they have 3 guards (ZC, KE, JJ) in at the same time, they are a bad zone defensive team. They haven't practiced it enough, so the guys don't know their roles well enough. They're probably be practicing it more now that MC might be down for a while.

Also BYU's best player is still suspended until December. They could be pretty good the rest of the season when he comes back.

Boise missing their best player for our win against them. 6-2 could easily be 4-4. Lots of concern about ISU being short handed, possibly playing without Chastain. Injuries, benchings, etc. are part of basketball, not unique to ISU. If anything, it’s been a net positive for ISU this year IMO.

Childs is their best player. He averages 21 and 13.

I think the point is that they still have a really good player who hasn't been able to play yet (and may be better than Childs), and will soon be eligible to play.

PS: Some of you guys might want to consider using the chat option during the games. It's easier to ride the emotional fandom wave on there and have it stay out of sight so you don't get a yellow card from other posters later on.

Where is the chat?

The chat is for snowflakes.

I haven't read the whole thread and probably won't but it is sure nice to come on here and seem some positivity.

That game last night was one I'm sure glad I didn't miss. The team played with a lot of heart and determination down the stretch. It was great to see the Keyshawn of old. Copeland is learning not to try and take over and do everything himself. We are best when we play as a team. It was great to see Phil hit his free throws.

Lets go out and get another W on Saturday!

Fayne, Jefferson and Copeland all played 38 out of 45 minutes. Yikes. That's not sustainable. Only 7 guys played more than 10 minutes.

My only argument to that is Nevada the Martin brothers average 34.1 and 37.3. Caroline averages 36.4 and Thurman 31.3.

I think you can do it. There are ebbs and flows to the season when you can get them more rest. I'm a believer to get the most minutes you can out of your best players.
The only reason to limit minutes is for exposure to injury. These are 20-ish kids that have played basketball constantly for many years. They don’t get tired playing a single college game with mandated TV timeouts every 4 minutes.

Was there not talk a while back of possibly one of the transfers sitting out being eligible soon?
Anything?

Doesn’t M2M with 3 guards in the game just give their 3 a better post up opportunity? It seems a zone is a better defense to hide in when giving up height.

And FWIW, Key told Matty pregame he’s only about 80% right now. Key took a couple of nasty tumbles last night. Hope he came out of last night’s game at 80%.

He mentioned post game that he's still not 100% but isn't going to rest or take a step back. According to Muller on multiple occasions, "Keyshawn loves for everyone to know how hurt he is." There is a difference between injured and hurt.

Ask ADunk. He says he's heard their will be. But, nothing ever came of it. Maybe it was Fisher and theyre not saying anything because he has a broken wrist. Or maybe they counted their eggs before they hatched, I don't know.

I would say that’s on Muller, but there’s only so much he has time to prepare for, and maybe this scenario falls under that catagory. Maybe not much bang for the buck on prepping for being down to 5 players.

If a 3 wants to post up let him. Bigs barely learn post up moves nowadays. Wings are not going to worry about it. As long as you don't let them get the ball in deep you'll be fine.

BYU gave up 92 points, need to fire their coach. Horrible!!!

Actually, their coach is on the hot seat. He had a successful first five seasons but by BYU standards the last five season haven't been great (even though they've made at least the NIT every season). He's gone after this season unless they turn this season around.

I wish our LOW standard was the NIT every season with an NCAA every five seasons like BYU. At BYU that gets you fired.

If that's the case name me one kid in all of college basketball who plays 40 min a game. This is a LONG season and it's a freakin' grind physically and emotionally. I get your point, but you're asking for trouble playing a kid that much, with rare exception. Especially so given our group, who seems to have caught an injury virus over the last...2...years. If I see another boot I'm going to shove it up someone's...

Also on the zone with Key JJ and Cope (as BirdFriend referenced) in the lineup we're short on the perimeter. Length makes all the difference in a zone.

Yet I realize we look embarrassing in man, sometimes. So I don't know what the hek to do.
