Hein’s minutes will evaporate. He’ll graduate, and decide to move on with his life. I think he’s played his last year on scholarship at ISU. The 3-1 scholarship/pay you own way arrangement was a helluva deal for a handcuff with very little basketball talent. Not to mention, he was handcuffed to a huge bust. Hein parlayed his situation into an incredible windfall. ISU spent 6 scholarship years to basically get very little in terms of statistical production. Hein and Ndaiye got 6 free years at ISU. This is the least he can do to repay what was a poor ROI for ISU.

I think Hein will play more than you think, but less than last year. I would guess that he averages somewhere around the 10-12 minute range.

Don’t take this the wrong way, but if he plays more than 10mpg we aren’t as good as we thought.

We do have a lot of guard depth, but there should
Still be minutes for Hein especially with the growth we saw in his game last year. I’m really hoping this team plays a lot of high intensity, full court defense with all of this depth.

I'm not going try and start a Matt Hein fight, but in my opinion you are wrong. Hein can average 11-12 minutes a game and we'll still be good, 10-12 minutes isn't earth shattering, and Muller really likes the hustle and heart the kid brings to the table.

This!
Some of you haters are embarrassing. He’s here, in a Redbird uni for free, offering his 2 years of significant D-I action. He’s no MM or PLee, but his efforts were essential in many games last year. Y’all deny him that, and you deny his selfless act, whether prompted or not, he did it and he’s still here!
Thanks, Matt. I’m still on the bandwagon.

He is well respected and liked by his teammates as well. That speaks volumes to me.

I've had the opportunity to speak with him as well as his parents. He's a fine young man with great character and he represents the Redbirds in the best way possible.

Very well said, and I totally agree. His effort is excellent, and he gives all that he has. We could only hope to get that from each member of our teams .... and, even more so, a few of our fans. While disappointment at times is understandable, there is, IMO, absolutely NO reason to rip on, or belittle, our players who are conducting themselves well, and giving the best they have.

I’m not ripping on Hein. Just my opinion that scholarships should be awarded for talent more than effort. That said, Dan awards PT based on effort over talent, so Hein very well could get minutes based on perceived lack of effort by other Redbird players. If Hein playing ahead of them doesn’t shame them into more effort, there’s not much hope for those type of players. If Hein’s getting minutes, that should be the ultimate motivator for any guys that are watching on the bench.

No. Not ripping on him. The world would be a seriously depressing place to live if everyone had someone to "not rip on" them like this.

I would believe what the coach said. There's really no reason to lie. Kids talk. Lie's get out.

And how would Dan telling the full truth in this scenario benefit him or the program?? Come on now. I don’t have any issue celebrating the situation, but let’s not be naive. He was asked or encouraged to give up his scholarship and he agreed. I am glad Matt decided to stay, he has represented ISU basketball to the highest standard from Day 1. I respect his decision.

So you're saying Dan lied and is a liar. Is that correct?

2 things here.

1st, and most important... Matt Hein you're awesome. Thank you for everything you've done, and continue to do for this University. What an awesome gesture.

2nd, and needs to be said... I'm gong to again go back to all of the people saying Muller runs people off and overrecruits. They simply don't know the entire story, and there's more than meets the eye in situations.

What an incredibly deep roster we have right now.

Pure speculation, but the likely scenario to me is that Muller told him he wouldn't have a scholarship next year once Fisher committed and he was welcome to walk on or transfer to another school and Hein, knowing that he would likely not be able to transfer to another D1 school, opted to walk on. The spin they put on it makes it sound like Dan got the whole team in a room and said guys, we need someone to step up and give up their scholarship so we can get Ndiaye, any takers? I doubt that was how it actually went down though. Still a nice gesture of Hein to give up his scholarship and not decide to transfer. Nice to have all this depth!
Possibly. That’s how things happen in the real world. But most of our fans live in fantasy land, and believe all the coach speak and media spin put before them.

So you're saying Dan lied and that he is a liar. Is that correct?

Worse than that he called me naive. 30 years as a coach/AD that's the one thing they never called me.😛

Never said he wasn’t a good guy or teammate. Simple said if he avgs 10+ min we aren’t that good or we are winning by 20.
