I would like every active member on this board to put themselves out there on this and answer this question:

Will we win the league and get to the NCAA Tournament next year with this year’s team??.....or do we need additional pieces to achieve that? And if the answer is we need additional pieces....what are they?
Yes we can win it but SIU, Bradley and Loyola will be contenders also
We need better guard play.. a shooting guard (hopefully Copeland), a point guard and KE needs to be healthy. EC could be the point guard if he develops.
Somebody needs to be able to spell Phil. I do not have confidence in Romine and David is too inconsistent. Seems like we are putting are eggs in the Ray basket or Taylor needs to get physically stronger.

David and Fayne can’t guard the Loyola big boy! He clears them out! We need a Juco big like Middlebrooks or Sampay!

Phil Fayne went head-to-head against Cameron Krutwig 3 times this season.
Phil Fayne 35 points 20 rebounds
Cameron Krutwig 30 points 19 rebounds
The game at Loyola, Phil was not 100%
Championship game:
Phil Fayne 12 points 12 rebounds
Cameron Krutwig 11 points 9 rebounds

I thought Krutwig was an All-American reading about him since Sunday.

That said, he's an enjoyable player to watch.

Finke may be leaving the Illini as a graduate transfer. As a stretch 4 not a candidate to be a force in the paint on D.

We desperately need one or two of these:

Also a quality PG.

An athlete's biggest jump physically should be between their freshman and sophomore year. Weight room, conditioning, agilities, plo's..... I think you'll see a ton of improvement in Taylor and EC. You've also got Tinsley in a real college strength and conditioning program for the first time coming out of a JC. He could use more strength. Chastain won't be rehabbing and he seems like the kind of kid who will kill it in the off-season. The 4 of them should be much improved. Of coarse so will everyone else's freshman.

I don't understand why everyone here fears Krutwig, Fayne out performed Krutwig. Sure Krutwig will be better next year, but Fayne will still be a bad matchup at the other end for him. You are looking in the wrong place if you think that is why we lost. The "true PG" talk is perplexing as well. Are we sure this thread is for the 2018 season, or 2008?

Edit: I stopped short of reading RedbirdSoxFan's post; well said.

this is a great comparison, but what about minutes? and i cant remember who was matched up with Fayne when Krutwig was on the bench? was it Jackson?

I disagree, you just can’t know this. I guarantee no one on this board predicted EVANS would average 16 points a night.
Put in the position to shoulder the burden, many current players could prob do the same...it wasn’t their role.
No doubt no one knows for sure but guessing who is most likely going to develop and who is likely to be a role player so that needs can be determined for recruiting is one of the biggest challenges and requirements of coaching. Question...we had many games where we did need other players to shoulder the burden and we had mixed results at best so if many current players could have shouldered the burden then where were they? My answer...because for his team they were either too green and needed to develop or are limited role players. Let’s hope the too green players make the big step and do develop.
We had 5 different players score 20 points at some point this year, I think you’d be hard-pressed to find a similar feat in all D-I.
I’m just playing a little devils advocate, I’m not saying you’re not right to some degree—just pointing to some of the info out there.

I think only three D1 teams had five players score more than 20 points in a game this year.

On a side note, the Redbirds vs Drake game were (1)William Tinsley point away from having three players with a triple/double. Have never seen that done before.
Yarbrough 22-10
Fayne 16-11
Tinsley 9-10

This reminds me of the stint I served at Alcatraz. One day the warden, Col. Klink, called us out to the yard for roll call. He was a mean ol’ German guy. He said, “I got ze good news and ze bad news. Ze good news is you are going to get a change of underwear. Ze bad news is Carter you trade with Rakefield, Hogan you trade with LaBeau, Baker you trade with Marshall...”

The moral of the story is the good news is we have everyone back. The bad news is we have everyone back...and we didn’t win a damn thing!

Tired of it!

Spread it!
