You know, there is something to be said about our recruiting focus. Is there something fundamentally wrong with going after big Midwestern white guys? It works for Northern Iowa. It’s working for Loyola. Did we make an effort to get Tuttle, Phyfe, Krutwig or Welch? Were we even aware of them as high school players? The recruiting of “athletes” is not providing return on investment. Recruitment strategy is an integral part of coaching. We’re on track to be a 10th Place team and yet do we even attempt to recruit Iowa, Indiana, etc. for solidly coached 6’8” and 6’9”, 220-230 lb. inside players who are physical, can block out, and rebound? Brian Kern provided more value in the day than Abdou and Kotov do now. Rick Lamb came out of tiny and now defunct Illiopolis H.S. and was a key contributor in 81-82 and 82-83.
Yes I've been pushing this for years - not necessarily the white guy thing, but the midwest for sure. We had Threloff, he left, he may or may not have turned out (guess he played quite a bit for NIU eventually). Wright State has a guy, Loudon Love, 6'8 260 lb from Geneva, IL. Averaging 14.6 and 10.3. I've watched him a few times and he's a horse. Quite a few post players in the MAC from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa. Wisconsin and Minnesota. They're out there!

Don't forget about the Koch brothers, from Wisconsin, who had a big impact o n the UNI program.

I mentioned in this post Mr. Loudon Love from Geneva, playing at Wright State. If you've got a few spare minutes, watch Wright State tonight on ESPNU at 8pm, playing Robert Morris. Watch Love for a while, he sure would look good in the middle of our line-up. Also a point guard from Arlington Heights St. Viator averaging 10ppg and 5 assists. Couple good Illinois kids playing for Scott Nagy. Also Tim Finke from Champaign averaging 10 and 6.

Look at Drake's stud Roman Penn. He's out of Calumet City. How do these players continue to slip through our hands?

Because Muller doesn’t recruit basketball players. He recruits dudes with low body fat % that can jump high and look good in the shower.

Drake's assistant coach Marty Richter coached the Wilkins and the Murphy twins in JUCO. Hemphill also went to Florida Southwestern although he originally went to Green Bay before Drake so I am pretty sure Richter probably coached or knew him.. He has the NW Indiana connections. Jonah Jackson is from Merriville and Penn is from Calumet City Il. is on the Indiana border. Even though Penn is from Illinois he played prep school in Crown Point and Bishop Noll which is private school in Indiana. He went to Siena but transferred to Drake when the Murphy Twins arrived. I believe there is a connection there.

Not sure how they got Brodie to transfer from Seton Hall to Drake but he has been a nice replacement for Robbins.

Its amazing what can be done when you have an assistant coach that can recruit.

Thanks for the good information on Drake assistants. It sounds like they have helped their program no doubt. However I don't think ISU's recruiting was ever the issue. With a few exceptions, a good portion of our talented players either underachieved or left. Now it would be very difficult for any newly hired assistant to recruit well (considering how many player have left ISU unhappy). Just my thoughts.

Two points:

1. Since 2017, Drake has really amped up their recruiting under Niko and Devries.

2. I think our recruiting was at a pinnacle when we had Dana and Torrey and there was a slow erosion from there. Dan's earlier teams had much more talent and depth than teams of recent. I think we hit bottom when we had Reese, Mullins, and Dusan collectively. It appears Belcher has helped the recruiting and I believe the last two years ... especially the young guards have the talent to compete.

No question the turnover has been and continues to be part of the issue.

Honestly I don't think we had great recruits ever. I think yak and Oliver were just great coaches.

I think the best roster we have seen in the last 10 years might be the one he inherited in 2012. Part of his sales pitch was that he was going to bring in better players that can play an up-tempo style to make us a top 25 program year in and year out.

Our recruiting isn't really the problem, its the churn. You replace 2-4 guys a year instead of 7-8 and bring in the top 2-4 we usually get and our world looks much brighter

It's because of the churn that we have to keep recruiting 7-8 players on an annual basis. Plus, I would have to assume that prospective players see and hear what's happening here and maybe decide to take a pass.

Exact a mundo. If 3\4 of your team returns each year and you cut out the guys you take a big chance to fill unexpected holes, our odds increase significantly. Maybe not as much as we would hope, but more consistently competitive

Does anyone have a strong feeling with how Muller is viewed by Illinois or nearby state AAU Coaches? Based on what I understand he is not looked at favorably and that is not good for ISU. Unless he is bringing 5 star recruits in from other states he should be spending 90% of his time around the area. Its inexcusable to overlook some of the talent that other rinky drink programs get that ultimately snake bite and embarrass ISU basketball.

1500 donors for $1000. I am in.

On this topic. I am debating with myself if we truly lack talent or is it coaching the talent. Both fall on the coach. If we lack talent that is his fault. If we have talent and cannot coach it that is his fault too. What do other Redbird fans think?

It’s the Coach, all of it. A D1 college the size of ISU should be able to attract decent players and be competitive. Nothing will improve until Muller is gone; and that’s not going to happen until his contract expires or he has the dignity to realize he has failed miserably and leaves on his own for the good of the program he professes to love.
