After watching the games here the last three days, here is a couple of my takeaways:

Milik is unstoppable when he is focused.

Rey Idowu and Matt Chastain will be good #6 & #7 players off the bench when Valley play begins. Gained some valuable minutes here the last couple days & really stepped up defensively.

Dan can really get their attention when he wants to (timeout during Tuesday’s game was not intended for children to hear). Got the attention of us fans in the stands.

These players respect Dan.

Those on this board who spend their time on here bashing the players and Dan need to find another team to cheer for. We don’t need your negative bullshit on here.

I couldn’t agree more. I am all In with Muller and some of these posts are ridiculous. This isn’t a guy who just “lucked” into a job at ISU. This guy loves ISU and wants the university and the program to succeed. That is all, have a good day.

I would add we go to all of the coach's shows with a group of friends and listen to what he had to say. He always stops to talk with us and I can promise you there is no one more invested in this team than him. We have witnessed the interactions between Dan and his players. There is tremendous respect and affection between all of them.

Tv camera happened to catch part of it. PBP guys discussed what they lip read. He certainly got the team's attention in a positive way

Always good to get the perspective from someone at the game. It looked like we had a good crowd. Dan even mentioned how the fans cheering helped the team & that they want to win for the fans. Good to see the team go into the stands & shake hands.

The hysteria 6 games into the season here has truly been amazing. If we win, it’s not by enough. If we lose the sky is falling so let’s fire the coach. Few, if any, of us are close enough to the team to make grand pronouncements about how he’s lost the team yada et al. Nor am
I !! What I DO KNOW is Dan is a really intelligent man, who was a great player and interned under a really good coach. 6 games don’t prove much. And finally all the naysayers about how he dealt with Milik the proof is in the pudding the last four games. Enjoy your turkey today! 😋

Now that we got that out of the way, LOL!!

While there are likely some hyperbolic responses on these threads that make it appear like fans want to castigate Muller & Co., it's equally annoying when peeps chime in with drippy, sanctimonious posts similar to the ones above. Again...

I don't believe anyone here denies Dan's character or passion for his players / coaching. If anyone outright did that, I would be on the frontlines defending HCDM.

The last two games showed promise for what making adjustments, playing to your strengths and limiting mistakes can yield for this team. That said, the facts that have led to years of 'just coming up short' over the last ~20 seasons - or more specifically the last 5-7 years - for this program have been consistent:

- LOADS of talent recruited into the system (I would say - of recent and perhaps with the exception of Wichita St. during their last few years in the MVC - ISU far and away has had the most/best collection of talent.

BUT

- Inability to balance talent with high basketball IQ / limiting bone-headed on-court decisions resulting in equally bone-headed losses.

Have to conclude that there's something amiss in the culture when continually plagued with such issues...

It's truly perplexing to me considering HCDM's origins playing for THE quintessential model of talent + smart basketball under Stallings (and - sorta tongue & cheek - being a Bone Scholar himself!, LOL!)

I mean Loyola - under a former ISU HC - brings together a collection of *somewhat* talented, but exceptionally smart basketball players (including a FROSH and a cple other underclassmen in the core rotation)...and make an unthinkable run to the FF. Meanwhile ISU with all their years of talent can't even get into the dance to have any chance at such a run (let alone winning a couple games). Ben Jacobsen is another example of having history bringing together "smart talent" capable of making deep, sustainable post season runs.

When will this come to fruition for this ISU program...in the face of all these years of being picked by prognosticators as "the mid-major team to watch"?

It's just so deflating when HCDM fields teams with such promise...only to perpetually fall short when it matters. As a Redbird alum ('97) who witnessed / covered the very best of what ISU produced under HCKS, I would say I've been *more* than patient. So, please be honest with yourselves in balancing evaluation of HCDMs character with rightful, smart criticism of his program's shortcomings.

I hope they can build on the last two victories with commitment to basketball competency and efficacy...yielding important wins en route to a conference tourney championship and long-awaited NCAA berth!

(Sidenote: HCDM's halftime and postgame comments in the BSU game were spot-on assessments. He's paid - relatively well - to turn around these issues and impart a culture of discipline in-balance with talent, which in-turn will lead to stacks if W's!)

I was talking to some friends last night that agree with you Malarch7. They were all from New York. Tom K, Tom Z, Tom R, Tom A., who were all great scouts in their day. One even made Eagle scout, and they all agreed charges should be filed against Muller for the poor choices he has made the last 6 years.

I'm glad you had the sense to set all the Muller lovers straight on this thread by saying things that hadn't been said already.

I have never questioned Dan’s love for ISU or how badly he wants to win. I question the way he tries to win and get positive results. Him caring doesn’t elevate the program. Winning games on the floor does.

You can sit here and put people down all day. You can’t argue the results. You claim to be a Redbird fan...but seem to justify mediocrity. Even when it’s right in front of you...you have a lame reason to justify it. It doesn’t matter what we think. It’s the end of the season results that will tell us how good of a coach Dan Muller or Brock Spack is. I would hope that if a coach is around for seven seasons he could make a post season appearance.

My feelings exactly. I want Dan to do well. I just don’t see a team being great if a Division 3 talent is your 6th-8th man off the bench.

I just don't like the name calling. Calling people sheep advances nothing, one opinions going to be on the majority side... that does not make them sheep.

We all love Muller and I don’t think there is a Redbird fan on this planet that wasn’t extremely excited when he came back to coach. He’s a helluva guy and seems to run the program in an honest and ethical manner.
That said, the end results speak for themselves.
Maybe those that defend Muller, regardless of results, and continue to bash those on this board that want more, can sit around a campfire with him, singing Kumbaya, while our program continues to wallow in mediocrity.

I agree! I have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to live through the Donewald days (Lamb, Brad Duncan, Johnson, Stefanovic etc) to Bender, Stallings, Richardson, Moser, Janks, to now Muller! Donewald, and Stallings seem to be the only two that really knew how to build a program! It’s amazing to see the difference in each other’s views! I remember being upset that’s Donewald seem to never bring a Juco player in! He seem to make it work!

I don’t blame it all on Muller! It would be nice to have an AD that thinks basketball is better than occasional trip to the NIt!

Milik can be unstoppable. Like him or not, we need a player of that talent level if we do make the Dance. Can’t be outmanned at every position if a P5 opponent awaits.
