Was anyone else unaware that they actually splice the numbers, letters, and graphics into the artificial surface? That is what they did, right?

stlRB ... nice diversion from the touchy steroid topic .. until our Flip the Bird turf project, I had no clue whether that was spray paint, chalk, or a over-eager landscaper with an edger trying to help. But I think you're right. Guessing the turf is made in long strips, with special cut-out device so teams can do their own lines, hashes, and numbers. Not all turf is used for football, so I guess it has to be manufactured neutral of sport .. then allow for custom cut-outs .. like our steroid-enhanced Reggie head.

Anyone have any pictures of the full endzones? I'd like to see the full finished product.
You can piece the endzones together. I haven't found any other pics.

What about all the yellow dead pee spots from when the Western IL ugly pug comes to town? Not to mention the grazing bison

We make them all go outside of Hancock to piss and crap .. get a little designated area ... otherwise it's a 15 yard penalty plus loss of down.

Those thick red stripes along the sidelines look cool. I hope they'll put some lettering in there, like 'Red Alert' or "Brock's House', anything but blanks.

I suspect there will be 80 people standing in that square at any given point during a game, lettering probably not needed.

I like the concept of the box, though. I think one of the issues with football is that players and coaches tend to get WAY too close to the field when on the sidelines. I've seen some college coaches standing as far out as the numbers giving signals. The box will help contain players and coaches, at least mentally, ESPECIALLY if something goes sideways out on the field.

Also as someone who has worked the chains at ISU games, it's a real pain in the butt when they are in the way of the chains.

The red area is for players. the green area closer to the sideline is for coaches. Coaches tend to wander. As long as they don't run into a side judge they're okay. Just trying to get a good angle.

I didn't know there was a reason for the red box. I don't remember any kind of box before, unless it was some thin white line. My memory though, not so good.

The ads on pantagraph.com suck but here is an article from Randy about the players reaction to the new turf.

I love that our players will love the new surface ... but just like the old Boston Celtics Garden, whose floors was very crappy ... it was something that the home team knew very well and adapted their footwork accordingly .. which would have given us some home field advantage. You can bet visiting teams were less used to Hancock field conditions than we were. So ironically, this may be a nice physical and mental lift for our Redbirds .. but it might help visiting team more in that it levels the playing field conditions.

TBH, it looks like an absolute steal for about $500,000. I've seen WAY less done for way more both in other places and at ISU. I'm impressed.

Never thought that the field would be hindering our team's performance, I just thought it looked a little worn. This is great news!

upon further review, I ignored an obvious positive . .. I suppose the wear & tear aspect during practice can take a toll on players as season progresses .. so an improved softer surface will be an advantage to players general health as season progresses compared to prior seasons. Translated .. fresher legs/bodies which put a little more bounce in the steps later into the season.
