Built bar paid for the school of all the walk ons for the BYU football team
Which raises other questions, not necessarily ones that can't be dealt with, but whatever tuition is for BYU, isn't that gonna be "income" to the student or his parents? And if it's the student, maybe no longer a deduction on folks' taxes? So many issues get raised by this crap.

It truly has become "legitimate" pay-to-play. Can you hear the marbles rattling around as I shake my head?

Soxie, I love your ambition but we have zero shot at Reeves.

And here's the thing. If he were my son (who know maybe he is), I'd tell him to bid himself out, too. Think about it. One really good monster game...in the right conference, the right program (high visibility)...just ONE...could generate his little empire...6 figures.

Buh bye mid-major programs, RIP. Buhbye. Your luggage was already packed a few years ago...

It's still not a bad gig. Degree paid for...housing covered...food covered...travel with very good hotel and food accommodations...excellent athletic training resources...perhaps a wee bit of NIL money...nice Arena to call your home...ya still get to shoot buckets for a while longer. No...not a bad gig. Matter of fact, it's a heck of a gig and a great way to transition into professional life!

But it's baseball in the low minors compared to the movers&shakers. How do you now compete with that??
Come on Humdinger, Zero chance! I had a Zero chance of E J Liddell finishing up his college career as a Redbird and that didn’t happen for me. Can’t you @ least give me 0.05% chance that a little NIL benefits could persuade Tone to hang out with his buddies here for one more year?

I think is/was a greater chance of Reeves returning vs E.J. transferring to ISU. I will give you 1%

Serious question; Who did Tone hangout with to watch the semi’s last night? Does he still hang with the guys he’s bailing on in a month?
Did the team hangout together to watch the games? Is he still considered part of the team?

In the past the team has been able to practice/workout through the NCAA championship game. I am not sure if that is still true and if so, who has been attending.

So I need to start a front business and then ask for donations so my said business can funnel money to the student athletes. What kind of salary would you all let me take?
Well, if its anything like everything else when moneys involved then I can guarantee you'll make enough for a season ticket in kickbacks and a down payment on a Rivian truck with a tasty rate

It looks like Kendall Gill is heading it up. I'm sure he has a few other former Illini athletes pitching in. Then toss in an alumni worth $8 billion. They can definitely "pay" Kofi for a year what he might make in the NBA. It will be interesting to see if donors shift their donations from the university to the NIL/ Guardians. If something like this were to happen here, Doug Collins probably needs to be the one that gets behind it. But your are right, you would think with the businesses around town something could be generated. Kofi looks like he made some $$ with OSF this year. Not sure who oversees NIL in the athletic department, but Sean Johnson appears to be someone that could do well at making the connections?
This is all so messed up

100 donors x $1,000 x 12 months = $1,200,000 per year for the men's basketball team. Hard to comete against plus any other fund raising activities they have.

The team is still working out. There have been a couple of social media posts with them in the weight room. Strong, Lewis, Jayden Johnson and Fleming have all been shown in the photos. They also did a "Birds give back" to a local elementary school last week with Fleming, Strong, Lewis and Schmitt in attendance.

As for Reeves, I haven't seen or heard of him being engaged with his former teammates. I do know that he's still be using the practice gym to get shots up and a manager has been rebounding for him. That said, he's currently in Chicago.

Seems like he's more than ready to move on. I wonder if Pedon even got a meeting with him, if so, was it any more than Tone walking in and just saying, "I'm out"?

Looking at the list of teams he's been mentioned with, he was locked in to Duke-UNC over the weekend. I think he could be solid addition for either of those teams but would do better for a team that is in the P5 and ranked somewhere from 15-25. He'd be a sure starter there. Would he walk in to any of these blue bloods and start next year or would he get the Yesufu treatment? Yesufu got sold a dream that was squandered immediately when Martin transferred from Az State.

Just curious . . . if Tone leaves, does Pedon get the same “can’t recruit” bellows that Muller got when Moore left?

So, does anyone care to put a price tag on an NIL deal that might keep Reeves here, say $100,000? Is this what college basketball has come to???

Well, putting my old school, get off my lawn, Mr. Naive hat on, I hope no one is transferring just for the money. Transferring because you think you'll get more exposure, a chance to up your game against better competition, etc., if that's what you think, I get. But yes, we are in a world of hurt if people are really going out and "buying" players, at least players like Reeves. God love him, but I don't know that he's worth $100K, you know what I mean? Sure hope that's not what it's come to.

From The Tribune Star….unfortunately there are many people/schools who are paying transfers:

Tyreke Key is leaving Indiana State. He’s leaving with a lot of love for the place where he played for four years as the sixth-leading scorer in school history.

Indiana State coach Josh Schertz wants Key to fulfill his dreams, but he is convinced that Key has had influence in the decision to transfer.

It was a contrasting tone from both Key and Schertz when they both talked to the Tribune-Star about Key’s announced intent to transfer on Saturday at Redbird Arena.

Key, who has missed the season after he had shoulder surgery in November, struck a thankful tone and said he doesn’t know his future college plan.

“When you look back on my career, I just kind of grinded it out, put in the work everyday and put in the hours. I decided it’s time for a new challenge and a new opportunity for myself to showcase at the next level,” Key

Schertz wished Key well, hopes he somehow comes back, but the first-year ISU coach is unhappy about what he alleges are “people in [Key’s] ear”.

“I kind of felt it a month ago,” Schertz said when asked when he had the feeling Key might not be back for his super-senior season in 2022-23.

“The better you are as a player, the more people are trying to kind of talk to you and get involved. There’s been some people since I got here a year ago that have been in his ear consistently. Coaching is a business where you get a lot of people in it who are about the right things who have great motives, want to help kids be successful, want to compete, but certainly have their kids’ best interest at heart and want young men to be successful in life,” Schertz added.

“Because of the money involved and the way the rules are set up in the NCAA, there’s so much gray, you get an equal amount of snake-oil salesmen who are about themselves and what they can do for themselves,” Schertz continued. “In this situation, like I said, there’s been people in his ear, whether it’s a current college coach or a former college coach. At the end of the day, ultimately ‘Reke decided to come back with all of that pressure last year and he made the decision that he wasn’t coming back with the same amount of pressure.”

Schertz was asked if he could identify the parties he’s talking about. He declined to do so.

“I’m going to leave it as it is. It’s not one person, it’s people in the year I’ve been here working behind the scenes to make things difficult. That’s a part of it. At the end of the day, we have to focus on things we control. We can’t control what someone or someone’s are doing,” Schertz said.

Since Schertz cited an unnamed current college coach, he was also asked if he intended to pursue a tampering charge against the coach he referenced.

“There’s no rules on people who aren’t in college athletics. There are on those in college athletics. I’ll let our compliance staff handle that. Everybody’s certainly going to be looking at it. In today’s world? It’s so hard to prove. There’s a lot of means and mechanisms to connect with somebody,” Schertz said.

Key denied that there was any outside influence in his decision, apart from consultation from his family.

“Really, I didn’t talk to nobody. I told my Mom how I thought about it. She’s very supportive and told her how I thought. It was strictly what I had in my own my mind. Nobody influenced me. I’ve not been talking to nobody. It’s really about getting my heart set on what I want,” Key said.

Schertz wanted to make clear that he’s not angry with Key or that he doesn’t understand the decision. Key averaged 14.5 points over four seasons and was a Missouri Valley Conference first team selection twice, so Schertz understands that Key would be attractive to most programs. However, Schertz feels there’s undue influence involved.

“At the end of the day, I want success for him. He’s a really good kid and a fantastic player. I told him my whole thing with him is that if you’re going to give people influence into your decision-making in a decision that’s so significant? You’d better make sure those people have your best interest at heart and not ulterior motives that their pushing an agenda as opposed to what’s best for you,” Schertz said.

Another thought on this…

Being a high-level coach nowadays just became a lot easier.
No longer do you need to spend time recruiting high school athletes, rolling the dice that they’ll turn out, and developing them. You can just sit back, let the mid-majors do all the work, and just pick them off through the transfer portal after they develop.
Watch for Bill Self’s golf game to get much better:)
