Johnny Davis just announced he's going to the Draft. Wisconsin is wide open for Reeves if he wants it.

And then there's the announcement UW's top recruit 6'4 shooting guard Conner Essegian was named a finalist Mr. Basketball in Indiana. Will be revealed tomorrow.

6’6 perimeter scorer averaging 20+ ppg. I guess the list shouldn’t surprise me. Too bad Muller couldn’t have put more around him.

He scored 23 at Wisconsin. Hard to say he can’t play at a P5 when he does that against an NCAA 3 seed.

Chatman 22 Pts 7 Rbs 7-10 shooting
Lewis 15 Pts 5 Rbs 6-9 shooting
Strong 15 Pts
Freeman had 4 Pts 2-3 shooting in 11 minutes before leaving with an injured foot.
Fleming didn’t play

If Chatman hadn’t gotten injured and lost for the season who knows how the season would have played out. And if everyone would have returned for the 2022-23 season who knows how far this team could have gone. There was some talent around Tone.

The Illini have a group “The Guardians” that are organizing donors to raise funding to keep Kofi at Illinois in 2022-23. Is there a group in Bloomington/Normal that is organizing donors to keep Antonio in a Redbird uniform in 2022-23? A free car & some cash from O’Brien or Rivian for a couple of commercials. Free stays and meals at one of the finer hotels for Antonio’s family when they are in town for games. Insurance and some cash donation from State Farm or Country Insurance. The Guardians also have an online link setup where you can make donations just like you would do to donate to the ISU scholarship fund.
If there is anything like this already setup could someone post the information on here. If not, is there anyone with the know how and experience that would possibly start it up? Would be great to give Antonio some extra incentives to stick around his buddies here in Normal Country.

It looks like Kendall Gill is heading it up. I'm sure he has a few other former Illini athletes pitching in. Then toss in an alumni worth $8 billion. They can definitely "pay" Kofi for a year what he might make in the NBA. It will be interesting to see if donors shift their donations from the university to the NIL/ Guardians. If something like this were to happen here, Doug Collins probably needs to be the one that gets behind it. But your are right, you would think with the businesses around town something could be generated. Kofi looks like he made some $$ with OSF this year. Not sure who oversees NIL in the athletic department, but Sean Johnson appears to be someone that could do well at making the connections?

If I understand it correctly, the university cannot be involved in “brokering” or being a liaison for NIL. They can only be involved from a compliance stand point.

Crazy how much things have changed. When I was in school, I got a call from the athletic department because the Red Alert leaders at the time were tweeting at DAP to come to ISU. Athletics called and said they had to self report to the NCAA.

Now, around 5 years later, we’re just opening talking about finding money to throw at these guys to keep them around.

A reality company is involved in the Guardians as well. It's set up so the public can give donations directly to them.

So I need to start a front business and then ask for donations so my said business can funnel money to the student athletes. What kind of salary would you all let me take?

There has is it that the AD from Illinois was calling donors last Summer for funds to match the offer from Kentucky of $500,000 for Kofi????

It truly has become "legitimate" pay-to-play. Can you hear the marbles rattling around as I shake my head?

Soxie, I love your ambition but we have zero shot at Reeves.

And here's the thing. If he were my son (who know maybe he is), I'd tell him to bid himself out, too. Think about it. One really good monster game...in the right conference, the right program (high visibility)...just ONE...could generate his little empire...6 figures.

Buh bye mid-major programs, RIP. Buhbye. Your luggage was already packed a few years ago...

It's still not a bad gig. Degree paid for...housing covered...food covered...travel with very good hotel and food accommodations...excellent athletic training resources...perhaps a wee bit of NIL money...nice Arena to call your home...ya still get to shoot buckets for a while longer. No...not a bad gig. Matter of fact, it's a heck of a gig and a great way to transition into professional life!

But it's baseball in the low minors compared to the movers&shakers. How do you now compete with that??

I don't see the sky falling in the long term. We're only a couple years into this. Already some of the P5 coaches, men's and women's, are talking about how crazy the portal is. Maybe I'm not paying enough attention, but I haven't seen any billboards or heard any great roll out of NIL commercials anywhere, I'm sure its happening in plenty of places, but I think this "settles down" in a couple years and sorts out and things are gonna be not all that much different than today. Different, for sure, but not the "death of mid-major" programs or anything like that.

Very true. I have only seen a couple Big, individual deals. I have seen where BYU, Miami, and Pitt football team members are receiving gift cards or compensation for promoting brands/businesses.
