Additional thought - is there "corruption" in college hockey and baseball? Sports where there are established "minor leagues" and where athletes are able to pursue their professional dreams straight out of high school? I'm guessing not, I could be wrong, but would be interesting to know.

This. There is no reason to not let kids go right to the professional ranks. I love the model where you can go straight to pro if you want, but if you take the college route you can't be drafted or play in the NBA until 3 years out of high school. I'm sure there would be lawsuits, but feels like it would help clean things up a bit. Regardless I do think the at least 1 year our of high school experience has failed, although there has been corruption in the NCAA since the day the doors were opened.

Great points all around. The solution is simple. Let players go right from high school to the NBA. Let the NBA set up their own minor league if they wish -- expand the D League. They can have scouts like baseball.
This will drastically cut down on the $$$ corruption, I think. And make college basketball what it should be.

I am in the boat of the following: Allow players to determine if they want to be PAID EMPLOYEES of the college or SCHOLARSHIP ATHLETES of the college.
PAID EMPLOYEES:
-They can accept payment from outside sources or even the school itself. The employee will have access to discounted tuition rates at the school should they choose to attend class. Housing, tuition and food expenses are their own matter and will not be organized through the university.
-Paid employees are only eligible for 2 years of ball and cannot receive athletic scholarship.
-Paid Employees sign a 2 year non-compete clause saying that they cannot quit and sign with another college. (This will eliminate the annoying transfer concept)
SCHOLARSHIP ATHLETES
-Full tuition, housing, food, books AND a $250 a month stipend for personal expenses are all part of the scholarship. This goes for ALL student athletes of all scholarship athletics and will not be larger for higher revenue sports
-Scholarship Athletes CAN, at the end of any year, shift to PAID EMPLOYEE status.
- Transfer rules to stay in effect as they currently are except if a student were to declare Paid status.
This allows students to gamble on themselves if they want. A 4-5 star UCLA player CAN go in as an employee and simply get paid as they would through agents or other 3rd parties.
The issue I see with this is point shaving would happen almost immediately. It would be Blue Chips, but it would allow Mid Majors to save face. If you go wild west on this and say "Every player gets paid whatever they can go out and drum up, the P5 (plus rich ass schools like Liberty and GCU) start throwing 6 and 7 figure numbers as 15, 16 and 17 year old kids. If they hit one of a dozen of those, they will make their money back by being able to profit split merch with that star player. No mid major would be able to compete with the kind of cash flowing into programs like Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, Notre Dame, Villanova, Florida, Kentucky ETC. It would make every non-P5 FCS of basketball.

If you begin to pay basketball players, you’ll also have to start paying football, then maybe baseball, wrestling, softball, etc...where will it end?!
Best way to avoid all of this...a minor league system. Isaiah tried it years ago and it fell flat, probably ‘cause the wrong guy was in charge. Time to take another look.
