I am a little frustrated by some of the talking heads' analysis of this situation. "These kids need to be paid". They need to get more to avoid situation like this". I know I am an old fogey purist. But I say if a kid wants to go the NBA and they want him right out of college, fine by me. Maybe the NBA should develop their D League into more of a minor league system. I would like to see the STUDENT part of the the student athlete be strong. I also think it will level the playfield for all college programs. And end this crap that is going on.
Pay them some and they won't want any more. That is their ridiculous logic.

Greed isn't eliminated by paying them.

Clearly, greed was eliminated from the picture when Miller signed his multimillion deal. No need to cheat after getting that payday, right?

I'm with you 100%. It's fine for universities to pursue "excellence" in athletics, but let NFL and NBA set up their own minor leagues. Let colleges and universities get back to the business of education. Stop paying coaches millions and millions.

Additional thought - is there "corruption" in college hockey and baseball? Sports where there are established "minor leagues" and where athletes are able to pursue their professional dreams straight out of high school? I'm guessing not, I could be wrong, but would be interesting to know.

Great points about hockey and baseball, Madbird.

Reread my post. Sorry about the typo. Should have said right out of high school.

It was kind of annoying listening to Walton pontificate about Arizona last night because of this:

https://sports.yahoo.com/news/everyone-loves-winner-023700951--ncaab.html

"That quote comes from none other than Bill Walton, maybe the greatest Bruin of them all, in a 1978 book "Bill Walton: On the Road with the Portland Trail Blazers," which went on to detail how Sam Gilbert, a Los Angeles contractor the feds allege made millions laundering drug money, bought a decade worth of recruits for UCLA.

"It's hard for me to have a proper perspective on financial matters, since I've always had whatever I wanted since I enrolled at UCLA," Walton said.

That is the conundrum of UCLA and college sports as the Bruins go for their 12th NCAA title here Monday against Florida."

I would be against athletes getting paid by colleges but I think the NBA should accept athletes right out of High School.

Birdsflyhigh, you know that the NCAA even has a special designation for the P5's. They are called the "Autonomus" conferences. There are different rules. I like your designation -- the C5 is quite fitting.

Agreed, but they should rename the conferences after the five infamous families of New York City
1. Gambino
2. Bonanno
3. Colombo
4. Genovese
5. Lucchese

Any chance the FBI could snare WSU, or is Marshall too clean?

Why isn't Corleone on the list?

This. There is no reason to not let kids go right to the professional ranks. I love the model where you can go straight to pro if you want, but if you take the college route you can't be drafted or play in the NBA until 3 years out of high school. I'm sure there would be lawsuits, but feels like it would help clean things up a bit. Regardless I do think the at least 1 year our of high school experience has failed, although there has been corruption in the NCAA since the day the doors were opened.

Great stuff, JHBird :)

Great points all around. The solution is simple. Let players go right from high school to the NBA. Let the NBA set up their own minor league if they wish -- expand the D League. They can have scouts like baseball.

This will drastically cut down on the $$$ corruption, I think. And make college basketball what it should be.

I am in the boat of the following: Allow players to determine if they want to be PAID EMPLOYEES of the college or SCHOLARSHIP ATHLETES of the college.

PAID EMPLOYEES:

-They can accept payment from outside sources or even the school itself. The employee will have access to discounted tuition rates at the school should they choose to attend class. Housing, tuition and food expenses are their own matter and will not be organized through the university.

-Paid employees are only eligible for 2 years of ball and cannot receive athletic scholarship.

-Paid Employees sign a 2 year non-compete clause saying that they cannot quit and sign with another college. (This will eliminate the annoying transfer concept)

SCHOLARSHIP ATHLETES

-Full tuition, housing, food, books AND a $250 a month stipend for personal expenses are all part of the scholarship. This goes for ALL student athletes of all scholarship athletics and will not be larger for higher revenue sports

-Scholarship Athletes CAN, at the end of any year, shift to PAID EMPLOYEE status.

- Transfer rules to stay in effect as they currently are except if a student were to declare Paid status.

This allows students to gamble on themselves if they want. A 4-5 star UCLA player CAN go in as an employee and simply get paid as they would through agents or other 3rd parties.

The issue I see with this is point shaving would happen almost immediately. It would be Blue Chips, but it would allow Mid Majors to save face. If you go wild west on this and say "Every player gets paid whatever they can go out and drum up, the P5 (plus rich ass schools like Liberty and GCU) start throwing 6 and 7 figure numbers as 15, 16 and 17 year old kids. If they hit one of a dozen of those, they will make their money back by being able to profit split merch with that star player. No mid major would be able to compete with the kind of cash flowing into programs like Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, Notre Dame, Villanova, Florida, Kentucky ETC. It would make every non-P5 FCS of basketball.

If you begin to pay basketball players, you’ll also have to start paying football, then maybe baseball, wrestling, softball, etc...where will it end?!
Best way to avoid all of this...a minor league system. Isaiah tried it years ago and it fell flat, probably ‘cause the wrong guy was in charge. Time to take another look.

NBA contributes to this with their one year removed from HS eligibility rule.

The Clinton Foundation has money enough to form a new pro league. And you think college basketball is crooked now... wait til Hillary starts speaking at games and Bill mentors college players on sex.
