If (when) Muller stinks it up next season, the buyout drops to $1 million, but he will have earned $600,000 in salary. Get rid of him now and save $100,000.

There, i just saved ISU six figures....You're welcome.

It sounds like you like to make assumptions assuming ISU doesn't have a rainy day fund. It sounds like you many like to make excuses and assume ISU has no money.
No, actually, I am talking from one who knows the Illinois higher education system is in serious financial trouble because I am married to someone who sits in on budget discussions. ISU is the only state school that has been able to avoid furloughing university staff, profs, and employees. But that's because they've been using their rainy day funds. What do you think they've been using during the pandemic?

And in case you don't know, furloughs are unpaid time off.

View attachment 457I don’t know how the contract works if they have to pay the $1.5 million all at once or can spread it out over the length of the contract. However, when your operating budget for year as a University is 487.3 million. This money is a blip on the radar.
You really like spending someone else's money, don't you?

Every dollar spent other than your donation to the athletic department is literally someone else’s money.

They weren’t hurting for money when they gave Dietz bonuses every year. Plus, I’m sure they have a pot of gold coming their way with the second stimulus bill.

At some point you have to actually spend money to improve.

Indiana State second-team All-MVC forward Jake LaRavia is transferring. I think I found a Valley program is worse shape than ours.

Yes, by all means, let’s spend COVID Stimulus money to buy out the coach.

any chance that firings will be down across college basketball this spring due to covid?

there might be an argument that it is worthwhile to take the hit now because you won't be competing against many other schools to find your next coach. other isu i guess, but they just fired a guy after a winning season so it seems like you could spin that against them if both schools target the same guy.

i'm assuming muller gets another year, but it's something to think about.

I’m hearing Josh Schertz has agreed to become the Indiana State coach. Lincoln Memorial is already trying to replace him. Clearly

Lincoln Memorial coach Josh Schertz is the frontrunner to replace Greg Lansing at Indiana State, sources told @stadium. Schertz has won 30-plus games in 6 of the last 7 seasons in D-2 ranks and has a 83% career winning percentage. Extremely well-regarded in coaching circles.

I guess we can never argue what separates the mid majors from the big boys:

John Groce — who was still owed $1.7 million by the University of Illinois — said he could be "highly selective" as he awaited his next basketball coaching job.

Illinois bought him out and I bet they aren’t looking back.
