You could give the new coach a nice bonus to live off the first year, and back load his remaining two years of
1. The coach would have to agree to just getting bonus, likely significantly smaller than their first year salary. 2. It's still money in addition to a large buy out.
I guess we can never argue what separates the mid majors from the big boys:
John Groce — who was still owed $1.7 million by the University of Illinois — said he could be "highly selective" as he awaited his next basketball coaching job.
Illinois bought him out and I bet they aren’t looking back.
Being in the Big 10 has its financial advantages. The year U of I let go of Groce the Big 10 made roughly $512 million, and if they did a similar split to what they did in 2019, U of I would have gotten somewhere around $42 million.
