You could give the new coach a nice bonus to live off the first year, and back load his remaining two years of

1. The coach would have to agree to just getting bonus, likely significantly smaller than their first year salary. 2. It's still money in addition to a large buy out.

I guess we can never argue what separates the mid majors from the big boys:

John Groce — who was still owed $1.7 million by the University of Illinois — said he could be "highly selective" as he awaited his next basketball coaching job.

Illinois bought him out and I bet they aren’t looking back.

Being in the Big 10 has its financial advantages. The year U of I let go of Groce the Big 10 made roughly $512 million, and if they did a similar split to what they did in 2019, U of I would have gotten somewhere around $42 million.

It's been a while since I've posted, but I have been checking in somewhat regularly. First is my disclaimer:
I do not like what the team has been since plee and wills left. I am not particularly a Dan supporter, this is just a pov different than what's been on this thread and countless others.

I find it interesting how short our memory can be as fans, me included. I am certain this will not be well received, but the only reason we were not in the tourney is we had a WSU DYNASTY in our conference. That is not an excuse for losing in the conference tourny as bad as they did, but that whichy team was elite. I can see a lot of similarities between this young team, and the young team that turned into a bubble team as seniors. I guess I say this to make the point, I think Dan knows how to build a tournament caliber team, and he has some pieces on the current team that fit the mold. The teams that were led by Milik were lacking leadership from the players quite clearly. Coach should have seen that before the season started. That's on him. But his current team is built with players that more resemble the type of guys he had success with. My opinion is coach shouldn't have had such a monster contract to start with, but the program is probably better letting him build this team for another year and see how they progress. Paying that big of a buyout and having guys like Emon, DJ, and Antonio leave is not making our job any more appetizing to perspective coaches. There it is, that's my post.

We need forwards who can rebound and score. We’re guard heavy. Need Stefanovic and Cornley types, or at the very least, guys like Jarrod Coleman, Fayne, Hawkins, McIntosh. Abdou and Kotov do not fit that need.

ISU couldn’t even lure the Stefanovic and Cornley sons to attend ISU. That puts into perspective the prospects of getting those kinds of players to come here.

Yeah, except it's not like they picked a MAC school, they both went to the Big 10+. And both must have got their mom's genes, they turned out to be 6'4/6'5 small forward/guard types and not big boys like dad. And then their dads' coach got canned in a rude fashion, that can't have made the recruitment very easy.

You think Hank and Lou end up at ISU in the modern era? I don’t. Recruiting and exposure has changed. No such thing as a hidden gem anymore.

Peoria Notre Dame has two freshmen seeing a lot of varsity minutes. They are the sons of former Morton Illinois and Iowa Hawkeye J.R. Koch and Bradley player Marcellus Sommerville. But........now that I think about it......no way.

Ahh, you seemed to be implying ISU didn't get the sons because we are a crap program, but then you say we wouldn't have got the dads because the world has changed. Which is it?

The world has changed, and we’re a crap program. Why do I have to pick one, when clearly both are true?
