Kind of a binary profession. Not a lot of in between in coaching tenures. That’s why coaching tenures end, because they were great or disasters.

I can think of one that is in between...7 years, no NCAA Tournaments, long term deal.

I 100 percent get what you are saying.

Anyway, to stay on topic this feels very risky because they are paying him about $100,000 more than Barry. I’m sure they raised some money, but this may be a sink or swim hire for SIU as important basketball revenue is to their athletic department.

Since Dan hasn’t done anything in 7 years worthy of moving up the coaching ladder, he’s in my disaster catergory. But he can still turn it around. It’s really all about how they leave. Fired or hired away.

Jank’s my In between. Somehow moved up without doing anything.

Jank didn’t do anything? He had ISU relevant again after being near the bottom of the conference at the end of the Richardson and in most of the Moser years. 3 out of the 5 years ISU was in the MVC championship game. 2 overtimes in the MVC championship from getting to the big dance. After the down year in 2011, he had the team right back in contention the following year.

Why fans are obsessed with bringing someone they hold precious to their home team memories back to coach and likely fail and get fired is beyond me.

:text-+1: Emotions can certainly get in the way. Those memories/emotions helped some of the MVC coaches get hired and it will also give them a longer period of time to prove themselves.

I have nothing bad to say about Brendan but I hope he does go with him. Our staff needs some turnover and some experience brought in.

That's exactly how I feel. We can't keep the coaching team in tact after what happened this year. Doing so is the very definition of insanity.

This is one reason I was hoping for Judson when Muller was hired (don't interpret that I don't like Dan or want him canned). There is a flip-side to the emotion argument...the emotional attachment to his school might make such a coach more likely to stay if he finds success.

Greg Alexander: Would he be interested? Would he be a good fit? Would they pursue him?
A former Redbird who has been around basketball his whole life. His dad (Neil) has been the Lincoln High School basketball coach since Greg was 10. He played for his dad at Lincoln High School (team-mate all four years with Brian Cook) and was a four year starter at Illinois State (remains second on Redbirds all-time 3-point shooting list). Since graduating from Illinois State he has been an assistant varsity coach under his dad and head Sophomore coach at Lincoln High School.

What are your thoughts on bringing him in to replace Mullins? One concern I would have is his recruiting ability.
I would have zero doubts about his basketball knowledge and basketball IQ.

I think you hit the nail on the head as respects to recruiting ability being a big deal. I dont know anything about Alexander but I do know that teams need assistant coaches that can tirelessly and effectively judge and recruit talent so that muller can team up with the assistant coaches to close the deal. ISU recruiting seems stagnant right now (i’ll Admit that is hard to know) as there just has been little or no news regarding ISU and long term recruiting efforts. Most of the recruiting seems last second or via juco/transfers. If we lose Mullins than we lose all of his recruiting efforts and ties to players coming on board for the next 3 to 4 years and the downer is that SIU will gain that knowledge. We are in need of some quality offers to recruits as the cupboard seems it is a bit bare at this time.

Btw look for the triton head coach to possibley be a target assistant for the MVC or other D1 basketball teams.

A guy who has only been head coach of a Junior varsity high school team, pass.

Just saw Dan returning to Central IL Airport. Ask where our point guard was? Smiled and said getting one!

IDK, I think the Birds played with a Junior Varsity basketball IQ this season. He would have worked well with them.

unfortunately there isn't anyone on the current staff that can accomplish this.

Greg was a heck of a flippy cup player back in the day. Of course my team of 4 always beat his. He was always a great guy though and his teammates looked up to him. The offensive change his sophomore year did him no favors.

Gregg has the basketball chops (and his brother is a very trusted Underwood asst) and if he's interested in the next level, it's a move that on paper makes sense...for Alexander.

Just don't know if it actually does make sense though. Lots of "hmmmn" surrounding the Redbird program right now.

I’ll just throw this out here. There was a guy who never coached a JR High basketball game, JR Varsity basketball game, Varsity basketball game, sat on a college bench as an assistant or head coach, but went on to be the Head Coach of five NBA Championship teams. So saying someone who has only been a Varsity Assistant coach fifteen years & JR Varsity Head Coach could not make it as an Assistant Coach at Powerful Illinois State University might not be an accurate assumption.

Ali Farokhmanesh was an assistant at Drake under Nico, and has moved on to Colorado state with him. He was a GA at Nebraska for a couple years and then Director of Player Development for one year before becoming an assistant. Seems to have worked out well for him. Maybe you don’t need a ton of experience if you know the game well enough. Personally I think Adam Emmenecker would make a great coach, and is someone I would try to bring on in an entry level position. However he has no experience so is likely not on Muller’s radar.

Love Emmenecker in the booth. He would make a great coach I believe. I also though Justin McCloud would make a good coach. https://goumary.com/staff.aspx?staff=187
