Jerrance Howard is a great recruiter on that Staff. He was at Kansas for years under Self and one year at Texas. He played at Illinois so there are connections with the area.
This is who I hear has the job. According to a relative of someone on the newly former staff

Stop hiring former players to be first time head coaches. It fails way too often and fractures relationships. Dan will never view ISU the same. Brian with never view SIU the same.

About 6 weeks or so ago I went to the siu vs uic game and the topic of Mullen being on the hot list was discussed at a pregame lunch meeting. I was with 6 individuals and 4 of them were currently prominent high school or eybl coaches. Another individual was previously an assistant in the MVC but no longer is in the coaching ranks. They all have a good understanding of the past and current MVC. Most thought Mullen was in a very short leash. I brought up the favored son and Isu muller situation and they all, surprisingly to me, said that (letting him hang around too long) would not happen at siu as the cultures are different. They claim that winning at siu is a higher priority than Isu…ie expectations from fans and staff is higher and they demand more
I was stunned to hear that and quite frankly have no knowledge if that is indeed true. That conversation still gives me a hollow feeling about Isu athletics whenever I think about it.
ISU is way too “nice”. Or as us Cardinals say “lovable losers those cub fans”. But that culture may be changing but not Normal’s culture. ISU should be the third highest sports ticket in the state behind the 2 big whatever schools. That is what should be demanded by fans and boosters and the university itself. Unfortunately I fear ISU has too much of a “teacher college” mentality, so here is your participation trophy.

Ebube or Davis would look good in Redbird uniform. Some untapped potential

SIU AD going the Sycamore model of hiring a proven program builder. Just a matter of how big a hire they can make.
Go big like MO. State did in football when they hired Perino looking to rehab his career and reputation (did not work out so well). Or the coach that retired too soon and wants one more shot. Living in Carbondale is going to be a factor in candidates available.

Riffing off what Mel and Cubird have said. The main reason this good coach and good person was fired is because they did not make The Tournament. Leonard said it himself. I hate it for Mullins, but I understand it and I respect that clear line in the sand.

So whaddya think? In our league, every coach is hired to get the team to The Dance. What's the line? 3 years, 4 years, 5 years? Is that fair? What if you run a successful program but don't achieve a NCAA bid?

Tim was hired at the very end of the Wellman regime. If you knew Wellman's hires back in the day, he definitely has that Wellman feel - even 30 years later.
