I've called out Dan a few times on this board. He's making me eat my words. I'm happy to do that. Let's keep rolling!

Key’s last trey was gorgeous. It went out of the camera shot and splashed down. Fantastic!!

Game on. Let’s go Birds!! No let up.

Copeland's ankle-breaking exploit caused Custer to trip and stumble...it was a thing of beauty.

DM confirmed what the ESPN commentators said that hard defense from ISU caused a lot of the missed threes by LU as well as a bad shooting night by Custer. Lately Custer hasn't been scoring much or recording many assists and 1-12 is just atrocious.

However, the D was very good and it takes its toll on both sides late in the game; both sides were tired at the end. That's why we need Heine and JJ to come back as soon as possible which is around 2-4 weeks. The tournament is when you need lots of depth if you plan on advancing.

Did anyone else notice how much Krutwig pushes off and most of the time gets a way with it? He takes up a lot of room and can move people out but if you watch the replay notice how much he shoves and pushes usually right before he gets the ball. The refs called him for it a couple of times but they could have called it more than that. It's frustrating because of the ticky-tack fouls they called on Copeland, Key and as always MY.

Porter should have been T'd up when he was barking on the court during the game. I think he gets more leeway because of last year's success.

Great effort and a big time step up by the team for an important game. MY and Key were fantastic on both sides of the ball.

Krutwig pushes off all the time and the refs just look the other way....it's an absolute joke. Great W for the Birds last night and they just need to be laser focused one game at a time and control their own destiny.

For those saying that Birds victory over Loyola is improbable if they play again....really? ISU almost had them at Gentile, and the Ramblers have been blown off the court by the UE Aces and the MSU Bears. Loyola is very questionable on the road. Considering what was on the line in the MVC race, don't you think that the Ramblers were coming for the Birds with all they could throw at ISU.

The Birds played terrific defensively, but they could more than replicate what O they put up last night and probably do more.

Valpo on Tuesday and it's time for some serious payback....

GO YOU REDBIRDS!! :happy-bouncyred:

We were very fortune this game. In a rematch there is no way we get away with throwing up last second trash and theres no way Custer misses that many wide open shots.

And maybe their is no way we throw up that much trash next time!
If and’s and but’s

Any realistic fan can recognize that last night was somewhat of a fluke. I'm not sold on that performance by ISU

ISU worked extremely hard on defense which made Loyola have to work harder than normal on offense. I think many of the missed threes at the end of the game were from tired legs that resulted from our good defense to start the game.

Espn announcers said that towards the end of the game. Of course they aren’t haters or biased either.

Not to mention somewhat self inflicted. Krutwig, Custer, and Townes played 35, 37, and 38 minutes. Porter exhausted his horses in a hot building.

Those extra kids in the seats makes a huge difference. It creates an atmosphere that was lacking. If you get that right I believe more paying customers will come. We got plenty of extra seats so let the students in for free! Anybody know how much money that Red Alert pass even raises? It's only like 50 bucks for those who want one. To be honest, I was surprised that many students requested the free tickets. I figured those who really wanted to go would've had bought a pass. So basically, the student cost was more prohibitive than I first thought. To me they can charge me a little more on my season tickets if they start letting students in for free. It's worth it. The games will be more enjoyable. I love seeing the arena packed, cause that helps us win games.

That's been my concern/gripe ever since I heard that Red Alert is no longer "governed", at least not like it used to be when it was part of the AD (someone correct me if my details are confused there, but I think it's something like this now?) Anyway, the membership is $50 for the whole year for ALL SPORTS. So even just going to football and hoops games makes the thing pay for itself. Plus VB, baseball, softball, soccer, gymnastics---plenty of events year round to get every penny out of that membership. But I digress.

If student tix are $5, that's an issue IMHO. Believe me, most college kids can find a hell of a lot of other things to spend that money on. Face it, if a student is down to his last $5, is he going to buy a ticket to a hoops game or use it for a house party? If they bought that Red Alert membership back in August though, they can do both :geek: The AD did an awesome push for this game and the donors were extremely generous buying those student tix. It's kind of crappy that a game with that many narratives (battle for 1st, national TV, honoring Leudke, Final Four opponent whose coach was a former coach here, budding rivalry, etc etc) had to be pushed so hard around campus but literally that's what it takes to get students' attention these days if you aren't Duke.

Honoring Leudke is suppose to draw students to a game? Likely only a few have recently heard of him and even those students likely have listened to very few games called by him. The elder Redbird fans are the ones that appreciate Leudke.

Yes, true. I just needed another bullet point :p

Got to get back to ISU with my wife for this game and left the little ones at the grandparents. A few thoughts:

1. It was great to see many of you for the pre-game festivities. We know each other through our keyboards pretty well but meeting up for drinks and Redbird conversation is always great.

2. Great turnout and I think a lot of those give away student tickets were used. The arena was loud and raucous which is the way it should be. I wish the birds could have gotten a good chance for an alley oop or a fayne power dunk to bring the house down.

3. Custer couldn’t hit the ocean falling out of a boat. He missed some wide open looks which helped us come away with a win.

4. I’m worried about tired legs for 3 games in 3 days in St Louis. I’m hoping to hear that Hein or Jefferson will be available by then so that we have more than an 8 person team for Arch Madness.

5. Great defense on Krutwig the entire game. As HCDM said, it took a little bit of everyone to keep him from getting the ball in a scoring position.

6. There has been a lot of talk about students getting into games free with student ID. I’m a big proponent of this idea. Add a $20 fee onto a students fees/tuition bill and you’ll still be making more money than Red Alert passes, unless we’re selling 8,000 Red Alert passes per year. $20 on a $20,000+ tuition bill would probably be a lot more painless, in my opinion.

Custer didn’t have his usual game. Neither did Fayne so that’s pretty much a wash in my opinion. Ok Custer has a better game next time. Phil has a better game and we still win 👅. In the
M2m Copeland was all over him , did a nice job. Zach has played some really good D on some really good players lately. Yes we need another healthy body for STL but right now it is what it is. Just win!

This team is starting to play the way many expected, and it's a great thing. Malik has shown great growth and maturation in the last few games. So much of our success is directly related to his mental and emotional game. I really hope he keeps it up, because if he does - we're going to be in good shape.

Sorry I didn't get over to the table before the game to introduce myself in person. You may have talked to my daughter or wife however. We came in a little late because of my daughter's travel basketball games earlier in the afternoon, but most everyone was still there.

No update on JJ, but Hein said he is about 2 and half weeks out from a return.

Not much to say that hasn't been said. Great atmosphere. Great performance from every guy that played.

Total defensive buy in from the jump. It wore them out, and we had our way. The next step is seeing that same level of defensive intensity every single time they hit the court the rest of the way and the wins will take care of themselves.

I think for the rest of the home games they should just give another 300/400 student tickets away. Take the seat loss and hope they make it up in food sales or maybe sell some special t-shirts or something just to the student section (can't find $5 for a ticket, but I can find $10 for a $2 t-shirt that is exclusive). The atmosphere for college basketball is more the students and not the season ticket holders or former students who come with their kids. It's the students. The way consumption of sports is starting to move, why would I want to go there? I get a better view from my TV then I will ever get in the stadium. I don't have to put on pants, I can turn it off if they are sucking, I am used to watching all the away games on my portable device already. I'm already paying for ESPN+ so I better use it or my parents will get pissed. So you have to create the atmosphere, and the only way to do that is to get the students there, and it shows that they want free tickets and they turn out when the tickets are free. They are already funding everything else through fees, so they should get to go for free, create the demand from the students.

Then for next year, you eliminate the $50 fee, make all sports free to students with an active ID (I'm sure all the ID's have a bar code, and you have the kids order the tickets before hand through an app and just scan the ticket on their phone). Raise the student fee by $1 (so no one really notices at tuition time) and raise all season ticket holders by $2 for each sport per game(so football/M Basketball, keep the ladies sports where they are at), and raise the open seats by $3/$4, so instead of asking a Donor donate $2500 to get 500 students in there for free, you are spreading it among mainly former students. Tell everyone about the increase and why, and most people will be O.K. with it.

And maybe now the AD should start a 'Go Fund Me' page or send out an e-mail for Donations to the 'Get the Student's to the Lou' fund. Make it specifically for that, and let everyone know it's for that. I'm sure if we knew that $10/$15 could get a kid a bus ride and a ticket to all the games, some of us would find the $10/$15 to spare, make the bus ride and game free to the students who want to go and get them to sign up early. Students would have to fund the rest of the visit, but get them there and then they will figure out how to get a room with 1 single bed and 14 other friends and split the cost for the weekend.

Great W on Saturday. Congrats to the players and coaches. Yarbrough was excellent and great to see Key gaining confidence in his shot.

Guys played hard for 40 and when we do we are pretty tough

i would donate, as well. $But, the tickets ISU have are all session tickets and they go for $150 by themselves. Then you have to consider lodging. Probably looking at $250 per student.

Another great 35 minute effort for the Birds. I love the rotation Muller has (been forced) to settle in on. He is keeping his 8 active guys fresh, with no one playing more than 33 minutes. I REALLY like the way Ike moves at the top of the zone. Traditionally, he had been one of the corner guys. Putting someone 6'5 there instead of 6'2 makes it that much harder on shooters. He still struggles in the man to an extent but I think our zone is just better than our man. The zone is really active and its rare other teams see wide open looks in it (for the last few games anyway).

Once concern I have is when Jefferson and Hein do come back. Yes it will be great to have both of them for the sake of depth, but that will alter the current sub patters. The eight that have been playing are doing a very good job feeding off each other and knowing each other's strengths and weaknesses. When Hein and Jefferson return one, or both, will kind of be shoved back into the role they were in previously. With Jefferson, he had played himself out of the lineup but I had heard he was improving in practice similarly the Tinsley situation. Then we all know Hein will likely return to being sixth man. Ike has proved value and I hope he still sees minutes once both return. On the other hand, it would be nice to be able to go 10 deep, but it might be unreasonable.

I think it is a great idea if it could be pulled off. Usually, we have a smaller turnout at Arch Madness because it is spring break. Not sure with the tournament being late this year if it changes anything?

Also, Saturday night was awesome. Great crowd, great game, good job by our admins to get the students there. Make the tickets free in the future and keep up the same efforts for big games. Hope this is the start of the new wave of ISU admins making things happen.
