The pension obligations, though, are not on ISU or its AD budget, correct?

what department would get saddled with the pension obligations if the athletic department does not have to pay for their employees pension obligations? Some department has to pay them.

They're state employees. Employees generally pay, what, 10% out of their check to state retirement system? That's what funds (or is supposed to, haha, shame on you state of IL) state employees retirement. The state then pays it out, not ISU.

I want to make it clear I just don't want Muller to be able to waltz away anytime another university is willing to pay a few hundred thousand dollars a year more in annual compensation and not have ISU get anything in return. ISU will likely lose players, its ability to recruit will be hampered and the overall hoop program will be back to the middle of the MVC. ISU resides in the MVC and spends millions and millions more on athletics than other MVC universities. I am not certain where ISU spends so much more than other MVC teams but if they are not spending the additional funds on Muller to keep him as long as possible then they need to look at where they are spending their money. I get there is nothing that can be done if big time hoop program wants him but ISU should not lose him to a university like Dayton/Butler yet that currently is a real possibility.

Congrats out to HC Muller on a well deserved contract and pay raise. Hopefully Dan does think that he can get the ISU hoops program onto the national stage (ala Wichita State).

Didn't really like some of the Shocker fanbase, but HC Marshall showed that great success can be accomplished coming out of the MVC. Just hope Dan puts some roots down and keeps taking the ISU program higher. Sometimes chasing the money is not all it's cracked up to be.

Anyhow, very happy that ISU put the package together to show commitment to HC Muller and ISU hoops.

GO YOU REDBIRDS! :happy-bouncyred:

I was under the impression that most or all of Jacobson's salary was paid for by private donors

If a P5 wants Dan, they would be wiling to pay a much higher buyout. I don't see this as a favor to Dan. The $50K is a lost opportunity to cash in.

I love the extension, if DM wants to leave he will leave!! I love the clause where if he leaves then there is a home n home series and I wonder how many schools will be turned away by that??

ISU has more athletic programs than UNI.

I am not certain that is the driver as ISU has same women sports as Uni
and on the men's side all same except UNI has wrestling which has many bodies and ISU has baseball and tennis. The programs overall are basically the same. That said ISU has the advantage of being more centrally located in the MVC which should save on travel costs.
What do you mean by many bodies?
The scholarship limit for wrestling is 9.9.
Baseball is 11.7
Tennis is 4.5
Congrats to ISU and Dan!

:text-+1: A lost opportunity to have available funds to go out and hire a replacement coach that also may have a buyout too.

"many bodies"...just that there are a lot of wrestlers on a team (unlike a tennis team) but I have no idea if that means a lot of scholarships. Uni has 32 wrestlers on their roster. You answered the question though. Between uni wrestling and ISU baseball/tennis the difference is that ISU has the ability to offer about 7 more scholarships on the ISU men's sports compared to UNI men's sports. How many scholarships each university offers overall is an unknown but likely close.

Zero. There is an additional buyout of the home/home if they don't want to play.

Congrats Dan! Well deserved extension. I appreciate your devotion to ISU and its refreshing to know you are not going anywhere but taking ISU to the promised land! It will happen

Coach wants to get ISU to the next level, lets hope it doesn't take all 7 years of the extension.

When Muller said publicly that the only school in which there had been mutual interest was Dayton, I interpreted that to mean he wasn't going to leave get a little extra money in the short term. His former coach and longtime boss went to a P5 that's a difficult place to be successful at. Wouldn't be surprised if Muller wouldn't be enticed at all by one of the P5 basketball dregs.

How much money does it take to defend a coach against offers from one of these hard-to-win-at-basketball P5 schools? My recollection is that Wichita was pretty well inoculated from that group around the $1M mark.

Isn't it funny that less than two years ago this board was debating whether Dan should be fired . . . and now we're debating whether the buyout clause in his contract is enough. SMH

If you were one of the ones (not all) debating firing Dan two years ago don't paint them with your brush.

I hope Dan can pull in the kid from Zion before the season starts....the future is looking great but this season is going to be hard to watch...hope no one leaves after or during the season...need to be .500 to keep the verbales committed..

Muller's comment regarding Dayton I found to be interesting as well especially since he made it publicly. Though there was only Dayton this past season where there was mutual interest it does show that Muller is open to leaving ISU for the right position. I don't know him personally but from what many others have stated on this board it does sound like he is a competitor. With that spirit I find it hard to believe Muller would be satisfied coaching at a mid-major with limited resources for success and bypass the opportunity to compete at the highest level, all while earning substantially less income. I hope I am wrong but I believe Dan tipped his hat to the fans (or at least to ISU administration in order to get more money) that he will leave if the opportunity is right. As others have said enjoy it while he is here. ISU dances this year or soon (which would be great) and Muller looks even better on paper than he did this past offseason.

A top 60 next season to add to the top 175 in '19 plus a 6'10 kid next season...I'm hoping Okoro sees whats going on (IF Zion commits, of course). But, Okoro isn't from Blo-No so I doubt he has any real reason to stay.
