Love the little kick in if Muller departs:
"If Muller were to leave ISU for another Division I head coaching position, Lyons said the buyout would be $50,000 and a future home-and-home series with the Redbirds."

Love seeing Dan get a new deal, but a $50,000 buyout is insignificant. Its acknowledgment to Dan that they won't try to hold him back, I guess, and that's fair.

Look at the terms of Ben Jacobson's buyout:

"Jacobson and his agent cannot seek, discuss or negotiate with another school about a coaching vacancy without notifying athletic director Troy Dannen.
If Jacobson leaves UNI for another school before May 31, 2017, the Panthers would be owed 50 percent of whatever dollar amount remains on the contract. The buyout dips to 40 percent if Jacobson departs prior to May 31, 2019, and 30 percent prior to 2024."

Since his ten year deal was worth nearly $10 Million, it appears that in the beginning, the buyout would be almost $5 million.

It would gradually decrease as they owed him less and less money, but they tied him firmly to the team for at least 3-4 years.

ISU didn't try to do that with Dan, acknowledging that if he's offered big bucks, he will likely have earned them with success at ISU.

That's fair, and a good idea. You don't want him there when he doesn't want to be there. N. Iowa has slipped some since Jake's deal, so I wonder if his deal isn't biting into money that they need for other things.

Nice post, Bombay. I don't think in Coach's case that he doesn't want to be here (or any coach in most situations)...but coaches only have so many opportunities to make it big and make big dollars. Dan's in his prime. I hope he can cash out BIG. The fact that he's a stand out individual makes you realize how fortunate we are to have him back in Redbird for the time being.

Enjoy him and appreciate him, folks!

I don't know if the 50K buyout is embarrassing...or more of a favor to Dan for his time as an excellent student, player, coach, and ambassador for the university.

The more I think about it, the more I realize it's the latter.

Those are the type of terms that ISU should be negotiating for and trying to obtain. If ISU is not going to get something meaningful in return why extend his contract until 2024. It is not the Dan Muller Redbirds.

You provide the funds then - or a plug nickel. I'm sure they'd be happy to give him a huge deal and lock him down. I love militant fans who have ridiculous demands.

doing him a favor for being a good? that is what he is paid for and what would have happened if Dan had failed? Would he have returned the money?

Come on ISU...every university tries to negotiate a good deal on behalf of their students and alumni interest. I agree Dan deserves to get paid more. Pay him more and lock him up. $50K buyout on a 7 year contract?...so confusing.

I am sure this is a stretch commitment for the administration. I don't know the top AAV/length of contract scenario that they would be willing to offer to keep him but this is a top level contract for this school. Even if the Redbirds could match dollar for dollar that a P5 could offer there may be more incentives to accept the P5 contract in the end unless DM clones the Jacobson model and accepts a similar offering and stays around a little longer. Everyone wants success but in the end it sure can cost a lower budgeted school. Funny, some were calling for him to be canned last year and now he gets an extension less than a year later.

Ridiculous demands -- all they have to do is offer an extension and get something in return or don't offer it. UNI was able to negotiate a much better deal...how is that. UNI has been able to keep their coach. Nothing ridiculous other than some beating the drums about a good deal
for ISU when in reality it is a one way good deal for Muller.

I'll bet you a $1,000 Muller is gone by the start of the 2019 season. I don't want him gone.

Muller's agreement with ISU is much like Muller's agreement with his players and his team. I like the philosophy!

ISU has more athletic programs than UNI.

I am not certain that is the driver as ISU has same women sports as Uni
and on the men's side all same except UNI has wrestling which has many bodies and ISU has baseball and tennis. The programs overall are basically the same. That said ISU has the advantage of being more centrally located in the MVC which should save on travel costs.

at least ISU IS SOLVENT...Great job to sign him to an extension...

If that is a reference relative to ISU vs UNI just know that UNI's debt is rated much higher than ISU's debt.

The pension obligations, though, are not on ISU or its AD budget, correct?

what department would get saddled with the pension obligations if the athletic department does not have to pay for their employees pension obligations? Some department has to pay them.
