So at State Farm or COUNTRY or Rivian or whatever, gets a new CEO. And every one knows there is a VP that hasn't been able to cut it, and that CEO doesn't fire the VP within 3 months then the CEO is trash and should be let go? It doesn't work that way man. In private sector or at a university. Heck, it would be easier in the private sector than at a public school.

No, what happens is the VP's boss would have a case running with HR- and it wouldn't take 2-4 years. Trust me! That person isn't getting paid to win ball games either. It's not the last 3 months that matters... it's what got you to this point. 4 consecutive mediocre or failed seasons. You are aware that Dan has had soon-to-be 7/9 seasons where he has either been barely above .500 or a losing season...and 6/8 with no postseason (unless you count his CBI then 5/8).

No, they also ask you to retire early or fired. They don't feel sorry for you. If you are in the red they aren't going to let you lose money! Is this company a public traded company? If a stock company has four consecutive losses...I'm sure they clean house.

Let’s be honest here, Kyle has met with Lyons many times, and likely Lyons is still somewhat active during the transition period(this may be a problem, as he’s probably telling Brennan how great muller is). Dietz knows the muller situation. It’s not like Brennan has absolutely no clue about Dan’s career or job performance and needs any more time to assess the situation.

It’s pretty simple to me, if the university had the hunger to seriously compete and win, Muller would be gone around 1030 tomorrow night.

it was also convenient of Lyons to retire and duck the responsibility of handing this situation. Larry will go down in history as setting ISU Basketball back several years. His legacy is one of failure and inept decisions. Larry Lyons has failed ISU.

Lyons has been on vacation/retirement pretty much since the day Brennan took over.

To those that say ISU doesn’t have the money. Look at how much they have wasted or were going to waste on Covid testing.

$6 million they now don’t plan to use because of the fiasco tied to the Illinois lab. Plus, the other $1-$2 million I believe they already invested to build the lab (that only processes test for Chicago schools).

If you can just drop this type of money (and apparently throw it away), then the Muller buyout should be nothing.

If Dietz doesn’t allow Brennan to fire Muller, it will be his final middle finger to the two most important programs (men’s basketball and football) at the University.

Have you listened to Brennan at all? He’s commented several times that he was meeting with Larry to understand what he was working with. Larry even went to multiple basketball games and sat in the suite with Brennan. So to suggest Larry was gone the day he retired is incorrect.

Pantagraph: ISU President Larry Dietz mentioned in a December interview with the Pantagraph that the university was focusing on a bubble for a practice facility. Is that still the current direction your department is headed?

Brennan: “I still have more research to do on it. Larry (Lyons) has been out on vacation since I started. When he gets back, he and I are going to look over the plans we have. I have more educating of myself I need to do on that.

Can we just put this thread (and all other threads that turn into “Fire Muller”) to sleep for now, and let the new AD & President make the decision as to how they will choose to move forward with the future of the Men’s Basketball Program? I think we all have zero questions as to how everyone in this thread now feel about the program and the current coach.

Must be a stay cation considering Larry attended at minimum two b-ball games and sat in the suite with Kyle. Also thanks for proving my point, Kyle wants to sit down and go over the facility plans with Larry. Larry is very much still in the picture unfortunately

I prefer to leave this thread open if it will allow the other threads to stay on topic while letting people post about Dan Muller's future and their feelings about him and his career right here.

I'm trying to read the room here. It is seems that nearly everyone is in agreement that Muller should be relieved of his duties, but it seems as if the vibe is that he will likely be retained. Am I reading this correctly?

Of course, Brannen deserves the benefit of doubt when it comes to his day to day to management of the athletic department. But if Muller is retained, there are going to be legitimate questions about the dynamics between Brannen and the university.

These questions include:

Is Brannen actually empowered? If so, is he being cheap? Is he not dreaming big? Does he not have the wherewithal to make a good hire? Does he not hold ISU basketball in proper regard?

Also, I hate to be cynical, but putting off what is seemingly inevitable for another year may actually be good for Brannen's career longevity. If the next coach doesn't work out, he may not be around to hire the next one. Thus, waiting a year to start the clock on the next coach could be in his interest. Ryan Pace used this strategy when he kept a lame duck John Fox for Mitch's rookie year. Hopefully, people see past this strategy if it is employed here.

Man, college athletics are weird. One on hand, you don't want donors to have too much power as this can lead to dysfunction. On the other hand, it is weird to hand the keys to a guy who just got here when there are people on this board who care more about ISU and know more about ISU basketball. Brannen was brought here to do a job and I am confident he will put his whole heart into it. Hopefully, he has a long career here and this becomes home for him, but right now it is a job within a career. Sorry for the tangent. It is just a weird dynamic.

And the purpose of a fan site is? Also, you have the right to not respond and/or not reply. Passion over empathy. This currently, by far, is the longest running thread. It's unfortunate, but it's true.
