That's a cheap shot. What his wife makes has nothing to do with whether Dan should be fired, or Larry Lyons made a horrible mistake, or whether we have cash to buy him out. They did not vacation in Bloomington-Normal. I understand people don't like the job Dan did and that he should be fired. There is no need to bring his wife into the equation. That's low. Lyons presented a contract extension to Dan. It was obviously a contract heavily in his favor and a terrible one for the University. If any of us were offered that kind of security in our jobs, we would have signed it too. Dan has underachieved. We all know it. He knows it. But, a contract is a contract. Now the University has to make a decision. Blame Lyons for the contract; blame Dan for the state of the basketball program; leave his wife out of it.
A. I never said he should be fired for what his wife does.
B. Her job is public, she’s on boards and been in the pantagraph with it listed.
C. I’m guessing the job was part of a package deal.
D. No one should feel sad for Dan. He and his wife have made more money than anyone would need in their life since they’ve come here.
E. Hard to argue Dan has remotely earned what he’s paid.

Dan is gone from what I'm hearing. Perhaps he'll pull a surprise and win a Thursday game. But I'm pretty confident he'll be fired by March Madness.
This way the AD can go hunt a top assistant somewhere or perhaps grab the Wright State coach
I’m sure the new Athletic Director is spreading word that he has made a decision to replace Illinois State’s Head Basketball Coach at the end of the season. Doesn’t matter what the new University President will want to do. Guessing he wants to make sure that those on RBF are in the know. “From what I’m hearing” is right up there with “Sources say”.

You sound very on edge about the thought of Danny boy being fired. Let’s just say in a fantasy world, Dan loses Thursday and gets fired Friday, what are your thoughts?

There is no need to bring his wife and what kind of money she might make into the discussion. End of story.

Boosters talk. Also, what does Dietz replacement matter when they haven’t been named and won’t take over the role for months?

I refer to him as Dan, or Coach Muller. I don’t believe in disrespecting a man according to his Won/Loss record. You however feel you can just throw insults out as you desire.
if Dan Muller is not the Head Basketball Coach @ Illinois State University for the 2021-22 basketball season, I will be doing the same thing I did when Bob Donewald, Bob Bender, Kevin Stallings, Tom Richardson, Porter Moser, and Tim Jankavich all left. I will watch whoever is coaching & playing with the same amount of passion I have every season.
If Dan and the core of the Redbird team return for next season, I will not be disappointed. I would like to see what this team can do going forward. However, if main pieces to this team transfer out to the point that there is no chance of being a quality team in 2021-22, than I would agree that it would be a good time to start the season with a new Head Basketball Coach.
Dusan & DJ are playing very good basketball right now. Antonio has shown signs of being a very good player in 2021-22. Emon & Howard seem to show signs of being outstanding Redbirds before their careers are over. All of these players mentioned have improved immensely since the start of the season.
The Redbirds are the second best free-throw shooting team in the Missouri Valley Conference over the last half of the conference season. up from last in the first half of the conference season. And there is absolutely zero quit in this team.

Larry’s one claim to fame was never that he was a fundraiser. He was the compliance guy. He was also a stop gap solution that ended up being longer-term than originally intended. He brought Aaron Leetch back specifically to be AD-in-waiting. Unfortunately, we had a plane crash. And I’m not convinced that anyone still with the department has been the same
The plane crash... yeah horrible, unfortunate and many great, smart valuable people lost their lives. Truly a tragic moment.

However it’s been 6 years now. Dan and the athletic department has had plenty of time to recover and rebuild. This is no longer an excuse for the programs failures.
I wanted to say the same thing, but didn’t want to sound like a jerk. Trust me- we have all experienced a loss of a loved one and each handle it different. That shouldn’t be an excuse for Dan’s failures as a coach!

I wish I could live in la la land and be ok not worrying about results. That would be great to never have expectations.

Let’s face facts, this team finished dead last in the MVC. Outside of 2 teams the rest of the league is mediocre to awful.

The 4-5 game features a program so bad it’s firing it’s coach and the other is Evansville. How bad is Evansville? They lost to us.

We went 1-13 against the top 7 teams in the league and only won 1 game (Evansville) against a team that had their full roster.

There will be transfers so this team won’t all be back. Even if it is, as of now it won’t be in the top half of the league next year.

It’s tough to see us at the bottom of the MVC standings. Change has to be made. We are trending toward being comparable with the Chicago State, Dixie State, Savannah State, Alabama State, etc. programs.

Some of those coaches left and some were let go. Did you justify keeping the ones that got fired like you have with Muller?

I have zero control over the decisions to keep, or dismiss a coach. Neither do you. You can spend 24/7 on this board trashing whomever the coach is, but will never be yours, nor my decision who stays, or goes. So I just learn to support whoever the coach and players are that are wearing the Redbird uniform. Just like everyone else on this board, I want Illinois State basketball to be successful, but I have zero control over it. If the new Athletic Director needs us to tell him if Dan needs to be fired or not, maybe they hired the wrong man!

I wish I had this type of job security before I retired.

No coach is going to say they are worried about being fired. This has been said thousands of times and then they can fired within a week of the statement. The last three years have been extremly hard as a fan. The five years before this were really fun. Going to games, the banter on the board, getting excited about the next game or getting fired up about a bad call. Now it is just pain ugly. Even in a year we beat Bradley twice it was tough to watch. I still watched every game this year and am kind of happy I didn't have to drive 3 hours each way to see it live this year. I mean driving home after a 7 turnover football game I was still excited for the next 7 football games, I can't say the same about basketball this year. By the way LaGondola is still delicious!

Hell, if I ran my business with this type of record I would have went bankrupt years ago. I guess I didn't realize how crappy things have been over the last three years. And we are paying him $600k for this?!? I guess it's true what they say about certain individuals who will rise to their level of incompetency.

Also, I watched the press conference. Not one other question about job status to Lansing or Muller. I give the kid from the Vidette to have the stones to ask a tough question.

Benson and Muller were too busy acting like the UNI games were classics on par with Ohio State and Michigan last week.

I'm sure Muller was surprised they didn't ask him what was his favorite restaurant in St.Louis. He says go ahead and ask...then he gets mad. Some will say, maybe you should ask it in a sugar coated way. He is making $600,000 a year...I don't think he needs to be fed milk and cookies.

If he had an occasional losing season...I can accept that. But, 2 NIT'S and 1 CBI in nine years is a failure. Not to mention that his glory year he got beat by UCF after a nice lead at the half. It was similar to the 14/15 season when we blew a big lead against UNI in the Valley Championship. Dan's coaching failed to adjust again...and Jacobson outcoached him again. The best part is 1 season with an NIT Loss to UCF warrants a 7 year contract extension.

I'm curious what you guys think about Will Brown? At Albany for 20 years, knows mid major basketball. I'm not asking for the anything is better than what we got answer.... I have read the so called top guys and assisstant coaches but I thought he would be inteersting to look at. I will also say I have supported and not even bringing up his records, his comments the last few weeks are terrrible. Blaming families and deflecting questions is rough. I wish he would just own up to what has happened but I can tell he will deny until seeing the door.

Pass. From NY and been at Albany forever. Think he’s a decent coach, but zero indication he’d be successful in the middle of the Midwest.
