Me too. At Loyola he can do whatever he wants for years with no pressure on him. He has already taken them to the mountain. At St. John's he will be under attack from the jump. If he doesn't get it done in 2-3 years he will bounced out and another guy will fill the vacancy. I suppose St. John's can pay him a boatload more than Loyola, but stranger things have happened.

So you’re basically saying he won’t take the job (for likely a LOT more money), because maybe he’ll fail?
These guys are ultimate competitors. He’s gone. Bet on it.

What Yak takes the Loyola job and beats us unmercifully, year in and year out, y’all are going to get a huge “I told you so” from Jnhsbird (or whatever his moniker was)...

That will be a neat trick now.

Oops.

Why doesn't St. John's just call Muller? He fits their number one criteria right now. Desperate enough to say yes.

Time will tell if this is a good move for Moser. The insanity of college coaching searches right now that Moser with one good 2 week stretch in March out of 15 years would get you that much money is nuts.

Porter has built a solid/respectable program at Loyola which includes a team image that is desirable esp for the private universities. His track record at Loyola looks good although current administration should get credit for finally putting financial resources towards the basketball program. Loyola is not ND or Villanova image wise but it has a better image/is larger/better financed than a majority of the big east universities . A bit of a sleeping giant and moser success partially due to right place right time concept.

Will be interesting to see if loyola ups the ante to keep Moser. If Loyola does ante up the big bucks that is clear sign that the writing is on the wall for a loyola MVC exit....which university and athletic has stated privately to some ulumni/donors is their goal when the timing is right.

Happy for the Valley, but I sure don't understand it. Loyola must have ponied up a raise.

I wish I could have.

St. John's is an entirely different beast than Loyola. The Big East is light years ahead of the valley. Just ask Keno Davis. Moser probably got a nice little bump from Loyola, maybe his wife did not want to uproot the family. Sometimes in life it's not always about the $$$$. I cannot even believe I just said that.

I could see them jumping to the A10. Lot's of private schools and you do not have to worry about football and it's associated costs.

Porter turned down St Johns?!? Doesn't he realize the wasteland he's staying in?

Thanks Muller

The Big East is the Catholic league of college basketball so maybe Loyola just joins the Big East in a year or 2. Would St Louis and Loyola add a couple more big city names to their roster. I realize DePaul is already there, but that would be a huge rivalry game for the city.

I could see Big East expanding big time poaching from MVC and A10 where DePaul, Marquette, Creighton, Loyola, St Louis, Butler, Dayton and Detroit are the West while Villanova, Provy, St Johns, Seton Hall, Georgetown, St Joseph, St Bonaventure and Xavier are in the East

Big win for the MVC. You can already see the usual suspects scrambling for the spin.

Or maybe, JUST MAYBE, not every coach just chases a paycheck?

I doubt he takes it. I mean, is St. John's really an upgrade over Loyola? Yes, you are essentially the go-to school for New York players that want to stay home, but that is kind of a trash market for basketball. We talk about the cupboard being bare, they really really are there now. He would have AT LEAST two years of sub .500 seasons before his players could get their legs. By then, people might already be calling for his head.

I can see him staying at Loyola until that icebox they have in the paint graduates, then taking off. I can honestly see Northwestern throwing a similar offer at him in the next two years. That way he triples his pay, moves to a major conference and never has to move his family.
.
This has to be a facetious post. I am not certain but so much is far from reality...esp NY being a trash market

Lets take a look, shall we. Here is a list of all of the D1 basketball in New York and New Jersey:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_college_athletic_programs_in_New_Jersey
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_college_athletic_programs_in_New_York

Only Syracuse, St. Johns and Seton Hall stand out as notable programs in the market. If New York was this amazing college basketball market, wouldn't there be more big name New York prospects staying in New York? I mean, the talent is there, but if you are a talented high school kid in New York, you are not moving to Queens to play ball. You are moving to North Carolina, California, Florida or other markets where people are interested in your game. Chicago has the same problem. If Northwestern were ranked #1 to start the season and were playing against 2 Depaul on an aircraft carrier parked at Navy Pier, they would be on the 3rd page of the Tribune behind several articles about Mitch Trubisky's throwing motion.

New York and Chicago are NOT where you want to be as a college player trying to make a name for yourself. You go where you are on the cover of the paper for scoring 35 points, not an asterisk under the box score on page 8.

And stop bringing up money. As has been noted here and many other places, Porter came INTO coaching loaded. The guy has been extremely comfortable financially his whole life. So some team offering a guy with 3 million in the bank an extra $250K to deal with extreme scrutiny in a new place does not make sense.

Now, if you had some coach who came from meager beginnings who was coaching in a cornfield somewhere get offered an extra 2 million over 4 years, he'd jump at it. I really don't think money is in the top 5 things Porter cares about when it comes to his next job.

Exactly. I already turned down St. John’s before they pursued Porter. Already have too much money.
