Who is our next head coach

I know this is stretch, but it would be nice to have a coach that won't see ISU as a stepping stone...someone where we might stand to have a longtime tenure even if they have some success. Maybe ties to Illinois or the Midwest. Not necessarily an up and comer...maybe a veteran head coach or longtime assistant that might be happy being in Normal and has many connections to other college assistants and high school coaches.

With that said, I'll be fine if Mark Few or Scott Drew wants to apply.
Luke Murray doesn’t need the money. Also spent a lot of time in Louisville (Midwest).

His dad would be a hoot in the Legends Club room…

I'd actually love it if a coach used us as a stepping stone, since that would mean our teams would be performing really well. Kind of like the Bears new OC, if he gets hired to be a head coach in 2 years that's fantastic since that means Justin Fields turned into a really good qb.

Really like the Dennis Gates suggestion - huge ties to entire chicagoland/nw indiana area and now even cleveland/detroit area
I'm fine with Gates, but his roster at CSU has had limited # of Chicago guys. And Florida St. when he assisted there had no Chicago guys. So he may have ties, but doesn't seem to have used them. A little disappointing to me.

I hope ISU hires the best person for the job. Don’t settle for less over concerns about legacy connections to the university. If Powell is the home run hire, settling for a triple is a disservice to all concerned.
Totally agree. I hope Brennan will employ a full nationwide search, a full court press, for the best guy out there. I have to say I have faith in Kyle after he showed his ability to raise cash for IPF and to Can Dan.

I think what’s being lost here is nobody is celebrating Dan the person losing his job. We are celebrating hope for the future of the program. Dan wasn’t successful enough. I wish him nothing but the best. I’m happy at the hope we all have as Redbird fans.

Absolutely, I woke up this morning feeling pretty hopeful about the Redbird basketball program. Has been quite a while since I could say that.

I believe his ties come from having been born in Chicago/grown up there and not from a coaching/recruiting stand point.

Me personally, I don't care where we recruit guys from, be it Illinois or Alaska, just bring in good players and win.

Some good ideas here, wonder which of us Brennan will pick for the search committee!!?? ;)

I have my doubts some of these names would be interested in coming to ISU, for one reason or another. They make good dough where they are, guys like Amaker with 10+years in at Harvard would have no gain for coming to ISU, some guys are working "at home" where they are (Williford at VA grew up there, played there and has coached there for years, guy from NTexasSt. is from the Tex/OK area, etc.). I'm curious how much we can end up paying and how attractive ISU and MVC is at this point - ie. do you leave a HC job in the Sun Belt or CUSA for ISU?

I'm curious how Brennan's ties to Utah and the Rockies/West play in to this - can he/will he have some guys in his back pocket we aren't thinking of (I tossed out ex-Utah assistant Tommy Connor, someone mentioned a Gonzaga asst) who might be ready to plug in? Guys from Mountain West or WAC, or PAC 12, etc. who'd be good choices and are willing to come to the midwest and that Brennan knows from his days at Utah.

Would definitely prefer whoever comes in has some midwest/Chicago recruiting ties, either himself or with an assistant or two. I have said on the board for years - with just a few hardy souls jumping on board with me! - that recruiting "local" kids should be a priority, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio, Michigan. Not every kid has to be and not kids who aren't good, but there's no reason why we can't get a couple kids a year out of the midwest to stay home and play. UNI, MSU, Loyola do this at our level, Purdue and Wisconsin and Iowa and Mich St. especially at the Big 10 level. Fine, you come across a kid from Georgia or Florida or the Carolinas, go for it.

I get it and obviously want to coach that is successful and being courted by other schools. However, best case would be success and avoiding a constant turning off coaches. I also understand turning successful coaches is better than a long-term unsuccessful tenure.

I’m guessing it was that same tingly feeling you felt the morning you woke up after Tom Richardson was fired. And the same tingly feeling you felt the morning after Porter Moser was fired. And the same tingly feeling you felt after Jank announced he was leaving. Their replacement’s all had the same results, zero NCAA appearances. So good for you feeling pretty good this morning.

Yeah, I did feel pretty hopeful when Rich and Porter got canned. Jank- eh, he never had the prolonged years where he sent ISU into the bottom of the MVC repeatedly like the others. However, I was in a sense relieved that we would hopefully play better non conference schedules.

As an ISU fan, I don't get how you wouldn't be hopeful for the program moving forward? Sure, we could hire another guy who fails, but at least there is a chance that this could be the start of a new era of Redbird basketball where perhaps we make the NCAA tournament again. That is something to be hopeful about.

It sounds like you dont share the same feelings, are you that emotionally attached to Dan that you can see the big picture here?

I do have hope that a new coach will come in and lead Illinois State to the level it was when Dan was a player. I just don’t feel the need to come on here and continually bash the coach. He was either going to be gone, or not be gone by the end of the season. Regardless, unlike you and some of your cohorts on here, I and many others on here chose to continue to support the team and let the AD do his job (which he did). Would be nice if we can just move on now, wish Dan the best, and support the basketball team until they play their last game in March.

You have to admit though, the main storyline this season, as well as the past couple, has been the status of the head coach. This is a message forum where fans are going to speak about the hot topics surrounding ISU basketball, and that was it. Sorry, if that was overwhelming to you.

Yes, Kyle did the first part of his job. The next step is to find the right man for the job. That will be what I am focused on. We have no chance of winning anything this year, so pardon me if I don't get too caught up in rooting on the team.

I love this message boards. It is very diversified. It has mature adults who can post their opinion’s on here as adults do, and it has , well, those who feel like they have the need to be heard, and heard, and heard on a daily basis because what they have to say needs to be heard!

Yet every thread turned into the same thing....for years. Yet every one agreed it needed to be done. But every. damn. thread.
