That's my question is we are hiring 2 coaches who are taking demotions and maybe paycuts. It looks great on paper but why are taking demotions and where did the $$ come from. I love the hires and makes sense just wondering how this has come about.

We rarely agree on anything, but I’m with you. This all seems odd. Has Dan finally decided to stop letting his massive ego get in the way and finally get help to try to win?? I don’t know.

Don't get me wrong I love the hires. Nice to get experience on the bench besides Dan. Just think it's weird that 1 guy leaves a HC to be an associate head coach and next guy leaves an associate head coach in his conference to be an assistant coach. Don't see it everyday but hat's off to Dan. Very good moves.

This might be the athletic department protecting their investment before they give up on it. Give him a little extra cash for one last go at it.

Wouldn't bother me to bring him on. This staff needed to be turned over and it wouldn't surprise me if Dan had instructions that changes were needed.

Not being snarky, but isn’t it Dan’s program? Who would be telling him what to do ?

He reports to the AD.

Understood, but the AD is telling Muller what assistants to hire and who needs to go? Didn't know AD’s were involved in this decisions. Seems odd

I doubt Lyons told him who to hire, but at the end of year evaluation Lyons might have told him you have to look at your weaknesses and fix them. The assistant coaches were so bad that Dan gave most of the responsibility to Mullins.

It was probably a conversation that Lyons can’t protect Dan forever if he keeps destroying the program.

It's an upgrade. I wouldn't call it waves. You don't take a demotion like these guys unless there is a reason. We hired two guys about to be unemployed.

They need to get players fast. This roster isn't winning anything right now.
You said a mouthful. :text-+1: :text-+1: :text-+1:

And unless Belcher or Jones has a player coming with them, we aren’t even in on an impact player right now.

Dan seems to have decided going into year 8 it is the time to build a program. Quality assistants, players without character issues. What’s next recruiting high school players from the Midwest?

I don’t understand the need to get players from Illinois. I don’’t care if they’re from Timbuktu. If they can get us out of this 21 year funk, then that’s all that matters to me.

While it may be a demotion in title, my guess is Belcher is probably getting a raise to come here.

Lansing is making about half of what Muller is.

I don’t care what the deal is. The two new assistants are masssive upgrades over Mullins and a guy most know didn’t want to be at ISU.

Isn't this the coach that had strong ties to the kid who was looking to transfer out of Cincinnati? Good move by the birds this should add some stability to the program. Some of the other hires simply looked like 1 or 2 year stepping stones as coaches

I did it as a H.S. AD. Theo did it to Maddon. I would agree it's unusual but if Dan were told to make changes (AND THAT'S A BIG FAT IF) it would be the AD who did it. I personally think it's all Dan. I think it's a good move and it flies in the face of a lot of the crap we get to read here.

I've move to this position. For a long time I was for recruiting close to home. Not any more. Best players available.

So . . . at this point, there is nothing official . . . even Belcher's announcement indicates nothing about his landing place. Just saying this in case it isn't actually happening.

Flat out being told...who knows, but HECK YES - in the university's premiere sport - the AD IS INVOLVED (sometimes substantially) in those decisions. Absolutely no question. Dan (as does every other employee in the ath dept) reports to the AD and the President of the University and considering we are not in Durham NC...that is the chain of command.

And folks if you didn't know it, and I love our boy Danny, personally...he is on a shorter leash.

Go you Redbirds, GO.

Always take the best player available regardless of locale. However developing a recruiting pipeline to the Chicagoland area should be seen as ISU coaches trying to consistently recruit in an area where ISU should have an advantage over other non-local universities due to coaches being able to easily see, recruit and develop relationship with players and their families; develop strong and deep relations with local high school and aau coaches; players wanting to stay closer to home; families wanting their kids closer to home so they can see games; name recognition...etc. In theory it should be easier to recruit in-state than out of state. Lastly for the basketball program (and all athletics) at ISU, where minimizing expenses seems to be a priority over maximizing revenues, it should be much less expensive to recruit locally.

I fall with ChiRedbirdfan. Not disagreeing with best player available but it helps us in large fashion to have Chicagoland street cred.

Really don't know where we stand in that reputation.

per my source- the assistant leaving is the one that we hired last year. i guess he's leaving due to wanting to be with his family

I’m curious what a shorter leash means?

Original tweet removed. Plot thickens.

It would be funny if Belcher takes a different job and breaks the record for shortest assistant stint in the Dan Muller era. Beating Haynes to Michigan and the other guy to Auburn that never made it to campus.
