I wonder what it costs to get a player to come to a SW Kansas shithole like wichita? They aren't getting premier players like Smithson did, but some of them surely were offered decent cash to other high mid-major schools.

Kind of a side note, on the coaches show they brought up Torres ( who was the player guest) transferring from Wichita. They asked if dan talked to Greg at all prior to it being approved. He said no but after it was approved, he texted Greg and said thank you for approving and received nothing back.

Not sure what’s more comical, this team or the fact that the lead topic on Redbirdfan.net is all about Wichita State.

Toss up.

Wow... was Dan trying to make Gregg look bad by telling this story? Because to me it shows how little amount of respect Dan has in the coaching world. At the same time, why didn’t Dan reach out beforehand? If he was relying on Gregg to give his blessing on this, I would think it makes sense to be proactive instead of just hoping for the best...

Not sure I agree with the lack of respect comment. There’s a history here. Marshall may be a great coach but there is no doubt he’s a jerk.

It sounds like he was just answering the question asked.

Dan said they have guys that specifically work these types of things, so he isn’t necessarily involved in get his transfer all sorted out. You could tell dan is not a fan of Marshall. But he was respectful about the question.

I’d like to hear the actual response. Just seems like he’s trying to paint Gregg in a negative light, which I get it, they don’t like each other .. but be a professional.

So this is a non-story and you’re just stirring the pot?

Sitting behind the visiting bench for many years at ISU games and interacting with a lot of visiting coaches, and watching how they treat their players. I think there are two Greggs.

Gregg away from basketball is a nice guy who likes helping people/groups out where he can and is very generous.

Gregg in basketball is an arrogant jerk who treats everyone around him like they are dumber than him at all times no matter what the topic or situation. He is confrontational first and everything has to be done his way or not at all. I've watched him berate players and assistant coaches for not doing exactly what he wanted, as well as get into it and flip off fans for talking at him as well. I also know that there is bad blood between Dan and Gregg from the Dana Ford thing as well the Hawkins switch, and neither coach particularly like one another. That said they are usually as respectful and professional to each other as they need to be.

All that being said Gregg is a fantastic coach, heck of a recruiter, and I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't want him to coach here.

I think KingO is just telling a story related to Wichita and jamminjamarsmiley is trying to spin it into a dig on Dan and how he isn't respected in the coaching world...

I have no problem with Marshall treating people that way. Division 1 basketball is a tough business. Everyone that signs up for it knows what they are getting into. His job is to not allow weakness. If people don't meet his expectations he holds them accountable. If he is so bad as person, why do hardly any of his players transfer (except the ones he knows can't play for him)? The players he recruits can go better places than Wichita, Kansas. He also only has coaching turnover when guys get head coaching or power 5 jobs.

On top of all that he's a brilliant basketball coach that has won a lot of games. So I would take him just like you said.

I'm not really saying he is a bad person, I'm just saying he is a jerk. You can be a jerk to people and still care about them, I do it quite a bit with my close group of friends(and despite my best efforts they haven't gotten rid of me yet).

I can't speak to how he acts in practice or how he treats guys, but from what I've heard from former players afterwards I know he cares about his players and that goes. That said he's had 8 guys transfer over the last couple of years, and who knows what the reason is, likely no different than any other coach (guys don't mesh with the play style, want more playing time, etc..)

Again, I'd take him, he is a hell of a coach and recruiter, he can just be an arrogant jerk at times. Though with his success at WSU he's likely earned some of it. All that said, I'm still going to root against him and WSU until the end of time.

I want nothing to do with a coach who can't find a watch to fit his wrist. Sad

Bobby Knight was a jerk too but he usually could find the right guys to make it work. You can't have an oversized ego and play for somebody like that...kinda like joining the army. You know what that drill sergeant is going to do to you (no offense Hulka), but you take it, and it makes you tougher.
