True. I guess it's safe?
Relatively safe as it's what most BLOB defenses are designed to give up. Getting the ball inside is pretty difficult, and even if you do get it in there you many times aren't in position to score. Not that the spread 4 was always used like this, but it is versatile as well as opposed to typical BLOB plays. With the spread 4, you can drive which we did some with Kendall. You can have a quick DHO or reversal. It can also put you in position to just run your offense from the top. I think the main thought process is to open up the court, spread the defense out, and force them to move rather than collapse on the paint and guard the near corner.

A couple of thoughts on some of the other candidates mentioned. I find it interesting that the most polarizing names are the guys who have actually had notable success as MVC head coaches. But in each case there is legit reason for skepticism. Marshall is toxic. Weber is old. Lowery fell of a cliff at SIU. Cuonzo is bad schematically.

Turgeon is the outlier here. He has a good enough resume that he could get another P6 job, but he has stated a desire to get back to the Midwest. With him being a KU guy, I don’t see him at Mizzou or KSU. Pay him 800k. Have him a get a vacation home in the Ozarks where his family can connect with Kansas family/friends. Maybe it could be a mutually beneficial fit.

Despite his quirks and an iffy reputation, Crean has a great resume and has the ideal recruiting ties for this job. And he isn’t getting another P6 job. But with how good he was as an analyst and how much he has banked, ISU would likely really need to pay up. Archie is a pipe dream as he will likely get Nc State, Pitt, or some other P6 job.

Prohm and Nagy are solid options. Henderson and Richman, while currently are underpaid, are Dakota lifers, so I don’t think they’d be that interested in ISU.

Except when the Birds are on D . . . then the lane is usually open.

Henderson is NOT a Dakota lifer. He is a small-town guy who's family first. B-N would fill the bill for him.

Would/should the new coach consider keeping anyone of the current coaching staff? Asking for a friend!!

My gut says clean slate for the new staff, but it wouldn’t be a terrible idea to retain Belcher or Johnson for continuity and their respective recruiting ties.

I’m more interested in who on the team returns. While he said he plans to stay, I too am from the camp that Tone is saying the “right” thing now so as to not hurt his chances of picking up offers. I also think Strong and Sy will play elsewhere. I’m not sure how the coaching change affects the rest of the team’s ability to transfer freely or not. As others have mentioned we could see some drop down a la Gassman to get more minutes.

But don't Strong and Sy have to sit a year now? Is it play immediately one time no matter how many transfers, or only on your first transfer?

I'm not sure anyone on the current staff has the recruiting ties that we need to keep. Johnson is kind of intriguing with his connection to that "outfit" whatever it is. But I'm hoping the next coach comes aboard with a ready team of assistants all set to go.

IF Muller would happen to get offered a Head Coaching job somewhere, would this staff go with him?

I’m not sure where they are academically, but I assumed they’d be graduate transfers just based on how long they’ve been in college.

Strong was JUCO so he would not have to sit

I believe Sy would have to sit and he also has the ACL questionmark. I could see Sy staying given his injury.

With the current state of the program why are so many people worried about who is staying? Who knows if the new coach would even want what's here.

Think so? I don’t think his name has the same drawl as a Dee Brown or Deron Williams… he was solid role player on a beloved team.
Even though he was not their star, he averaged 25+ minutes a game and double figures in scoring his junior and senior year. Didn't he even get a few games in the NBA? Note the same drawl I agree, but probably more than a solid role player.

Jank was 53-57 in 4 years at NTSU before resigning and going to Hutchinson CC, where he was 50-14 in 2 seasons. He resigned from NTSU because his AD demanded Jank schedule nothing but guarantee games for his non-con schedule.
And Hutchison CC was basically a Juco powerhouse where academically ineligible kids were parked until they could get grades/credits to transfer to D-1 schools.

Not taking anything away from Jank on that front, but he wasn’t exactly coaching John Logan or Kishwaukee CC.

Point was sub .500 at North Texas as a D-1 that wasn’t the Big East.
