Guys - we go through this BS every year. Dan's got his prima donnas and he's been somewhat overzealous with calling
this bunch the Best He's Had. OK - we suck at D and MY is a headache for him. MY is NOT a leader so put him on some kind
of an incentive program like......for every week he goes to class and without a traffic violation give him a candy bar.

Some sort of match up Zone will work wonders for periods of time with these guys. Rebounding/toughness is about Dan brow
beating the snot out of these guys. Just like in years past.

I’m not about to overreact to one loss, but in all seriousness- what the he’ll did people on here expect to happen yesterday and this year?

When you have a “star” senior who doesn’t play off the ball, has been sent packing once before, continues to get into trouble/suspended, has effort issues, and who constantly reacts to his own good plays with a “look-how-good-I-am” gesture, your team isn’t going to win these games, and sure as hell isnt dancing.

Dan playing Hein is not the problem. The fact that players more talented than him can’t beat him out by simply competing and doing things the right way, is the problem.

I turned off the TV last night to give myself ample processing time before commenting. Lots of stuff to address--Xs and Os, Belmont's ridiculously impressive debut, our defensive woes. What a letdown! But for me, one talking point stands above the rest:

Dan Muller called Milik Yarborough 'uncoachable.' (As in, incapable of learning or making progress.)

Coach can miss me with that Mike Woodbury/Bob Knight bullshit. As a public school teacher and coach, I'm ashamed of my university right now. There is NEVER a justifiable reason to lob fatalistic character assessments like that onto any kid, especially one like MY. There is ZERO recovery for stuff like that. John Wooden once said that "a coach is someone who can give correction without causing resentment." Tell the newspaper that the team needs more defensive effort from the seniors. Tell them on-court leadership is lacking. Don't tell them a kid can't be coached.

Put your big boy pants on, Coach. If you can't motivate kids with baggage and lead, don't recruit them. At worst, maybe call up Chris Jans at New Mexico State or the Detroit Pistons' Dwayne Casey to find out how they succeeded with Zach Lofton when you couldn't.

Disagree. Being uncoachable is a decision and can be fixed. Ask Johnny Hill. There comes a time when you can call a senior out for simple things like effort. This is a player who was thinking about leaving school to be a pro player. Dan has been covering for this guy for 3 years. I’m sure he’s tried everything. At some point, the truth is the truth. He’s not coachable. He needs to step up and become coachable or face bench time or worst - being let go.

Who’s fault is it that it’s to this point? I know we will disagree on this! He recruited these players, and failed to recruit a big to be serviceable outside Fayne! This roster is limited past 6 players. This falls on coaching!

It’s funny that anyone in their right mind would believe that it’s Yarborough’s fault that the other team just came out and lit the lazy zone up! How many years do we have to watch a muller zone get torched!

All of the Seniors (as well as other players) have done good and poor things on the court. It's the lack of consistency that is discerning.

MY actually can be one of the better defensive players. We have seen him handle much taller players in the post. Someone said it best ... Too much focus on what happened vs. focus on the play at hand. If he corrects this and takes care of the ball and he is easily the most valuable player.

While MY may the most talented and a MVP, we have very little inside presence besides Phil.
Phil has always been a high energy, great offensive rebounder, and brings a great attitude. He does struggle with physically strong inside men who know how to use their body. Hawkins would take these players two years ago and Phil was used on wings in zone and guarded the other player in man to man. We need another person able to step up and handle a Krutwig or the Center from Belmont type players. I don't believe Phil will excel at this. He can and needs to be a better defensive rebounder. His free thro stroke looks so much better this year.

Tinsley to me is frustrating and inconsistent. His stroke looks good but he routinely takes threes out of rhythm or way behind the arc because he hasn't positioned himself properly before receiving the ball. His lateral movement on defense can be lacking but his athletism makes him a very good defensive rebounder.

Key looks slow this year. In the three games (including exhibition) he hasn't really been able to consistently get by his defender nor stop the person he is guarding. There was a period of time last year when he returned from his injury where the same was happening. He may be knocking off the rust from 2 - 3 week layoff. I would like to see him play more off the ball and be ready for open shots vs. creating. I think this is when he is best.

Our destiny rest primarily in their hands. We need contributions from others but these 4 need to step it up. If they do, we have potential to do damage. If they remain inconsistent, expect games like Belmont to happen.

I seem to remember a lot of doom and gloom after the Birds started 1-2 in 2016/17. Then went 17-1 in conference. Then anger when we didn't get a bid.

Not saying that's going to happen, but am saying that 2 games is a little too soon to be making predictions about how bad we might be.

Next topic.

They had Yaklich that season. Something sorely missing right now.

Loyola loses to Furman. UCF loses to Florida Atlantic. We lose at Belmont. I don't know how the season will play out, but I know which of these three teams has the best loss.

Maybe. Furman is pretty good. Niko built a nice program before he left.

My expectations are an NCAA bid. Period. Same as they have been since 1998. 20 years have passed by and we still do not get any brownie points for being a “good” team. Nor should we. Every team in the Valley has found there way there since the last time we were there. We are Good enough to continually make it to the MVC final and good enough to get blown out. We need to find a way to take the next step. Whether it has been coaching, scheduling or prima donna players or any combination of the above it doesn’t matter now. I wholeheartedly still think we are capable of doing that THIS year. We have the talent on this roster. Last night’s result did not surprise me at all. Giving up 100 did. Watching another team “want it more,” hustle more and play together better was bothersome. Belmont is a 23+ win team and a Top 70 team so this will not be seen as a “bad loss,” in the end result. There needs to be a closed door Senior only meeting to get on the same page and get this thing on track. Anything less than a bid (automatic or MVC Tourney Champ) this year is totally unacceptable. If we fail to reach that goal then the talk about Dan or what is continually “broke” with this program is totally justified. Go Birds!!!

Good post.

I think this says more about how HCDM is now past the point of no return with MY. So much so that as a last resort, he is now hoping that by calling him out publicly the leopard's spots will change.

Either let him do his thing on the court for 30 minutes or let him go.
