Walking to the car we were behind two college kids who raved about how exciting the game was. It was their first one and the other kid said to his friend, "wow we really need to start coming to these." It was a win and in the end that's all that matters. Three of the four seniors are mentally weak and that's the issue. Here is hoping the team in red on the bench is more mentally strong.

COACHES CANT CALL TIMEOUTS DURING PLAY

My mistake. Did not know that rule change.

Could Copeland have called timeout?
Yes Copeland could have. The unwritten rule for college teams this year is as follows:
When a player is trying to avoid an instantaneous tie-up or turnover, the player calls the time-out.
If the clock is running down and the offense is not working, the coach yells for the player to call a time-out.....which takes about an extra second.

Through the ages the players without the ball seem to feel they can't move either when their teammate picks up his dribble..FYI, this is not the case. Run up to him and get the ball.

Took my son and his friend to the game. It was his friend's first time seeing the Birds play this year. He said 1) our defense looked better than last year, 2) we let up when we had the lead, 3) we fired up dumb shots late in the game, 4) the game was a lot of fun and glad we won.

I think two of our seniors put their focus on defense as they held Pipped to 6 points and 4 rebounds. ISU's last possession was a game winning foul shot by a senior which came from a nice assist from another senior, We also had a third senior hit a pretty clutch 3 at the end of the game. I haven't lost faith in those guys.

Honestly, I think the expectations are so low right now that I don’t see how that’s remotely possible.

I remember the days when this was one of the highest attended/hyped games each season. Used to be a strong, heated rivalry. Things are surely different now. But oh well. Gonna be another tough one, but figure out a way to get it done.

We will have to disagree on the alley-oop - Keyshawn threw a line-drive, hard and high - terrible, wild throw. That was the beginning of the momentum shift.

Yeah, the -oop was a designed play called by Muller. If it had worked, it would have given the Birds a huge amount of momentum (not that we've been good at keeping our momentum this year). But, like many of Key's shots this year, the pass was just off.

The Birds actually ran two designed plays coming off the technical on Pippen after Copeland made his 2 free throws. The Birds ran a play to open up Phil going to the bucket, but Phil was stripped of the ball as he gathered to attack the rim. The Birds next possession was the -oop. So SIU made a key stop/steal, then we missed the -oop . . . and we began to unravel . . .

What a pathetic display of basketball by both teams. Some of the dumbest players to grace Redbird Arena. Those are Junior High mistakes - just awful. Throwing bounce passes at the feet, dribbling into traffic, taking terrible shots, and so on.

We were up 45-29 - and Keyshawn decides to throw a wild ass, alley-oop to Tinsley that was not close. Then next possession takes a wild 3 off the dribble - SIU goes to score 18 in a row. Dumb plays and Dumb decisions change momentum and throw away leads.

Last play of the game was a fitting end to a terrible game by both teams - fitting. SIU wanted to lose worse than we did.

Though I agree there were some low BBIQ plays. Your point about the oop was way off. If we're thinking about the same play, Southern Illinois went zone and it was a drawn up play that was WIDE open. Boogie got both hands on on it but it was a little over thrown. It was a great play call but poor execution.
We missed two wide open alley oops ... one in the first half and one in the second. The good news is we are still almost at a 50 percent conversion rate on alley oops for the year.

Why run to him when you can hide inconspicuously behind a defender. I swear Copeland was just above the free throw line and 3 of the 4 players were between the three point arc and half court. Time out would have been the smart thing but thank God he didn't pass it to one of our chameleons.

BTW, our players have the same issue of getting open when Phil and MY get the ball. The double team comes and the lack of cuts or sliding to open passing lane is an issue.

When SIU went to the zone are poor 3 point shooting was really exposed. I am surprised we have not seen more teams play that against us.

Speaking of 3 point shots, I still believe one of the contributing factors to our poor 3 point shooting is the pass ... how many times is it low, high or off to a side.

Any chance we can WT more 3 point shots out front or near wing vs baseline or far wing. I don't know of any stats but he seems more accurate from there.

We know that but on the tape he is doing nothing - not yelling to his players anyone to call a TO. No set play - no help - just paralysis

I thought the same thing. It rarely is a pass that puts the shooter in their rhythm.

I would like us to continue to utilize the 2 2 1 press more each game. It really slows the other team down and forces them to use 7 to 9 seconds off the clock repeatedly.

Phil FT shooting and MC defense continue to be the two biggest unexpected positives this year.

There is not 1 team this year that is superior in the conference. I could see a 5 or 6 seed making it to mvc title game

Missed all but the last 12 minutes of the game. What were the technical(s) about?

Tick tac. Phil destroyed a ball into the fifth row of the student section and yelled towards Pippen. Later, Pippen and Phil got locked up and Phil flopped.

I can almost see this, but Loyola seems to be putting things together much faster than everyone else. The St. Louis Bowl creeps closer...
