Transfers Copeland, Chastain eager for next season with Redbirds http://www.pantagraph.com/sports/college/illinois-state/article_579a32ed-6deb-501e-9ad8-e28d60cb4709.html

Didn’t realize that was a 2nd ACL tear for Chastain. Otherwise an encouraging article about our transfers.

The 8 man rotation was
Milik, Fayne, KE, David and Williams. Plus Hein, Clarance and Tinsley. Gassman was the emergency 9. I would prefer Bruninga over Hein and Gassman.

Some 500 level commentary: I’d want to see TB at the 3 with FF at the 5 and Milik playing big at the 4 since TB struggles down low.

The issue with Taylor is defense. There’s no way he can defend threes at this level. If you want to play some Zone with him out there, sure, but there’s a reason he’s not in the rotation at this point.

Big offseason ahead for him.

Agreed. Hard not to be excited about Copeland after reading that.

You really can't help but suck the air out of anybody's halfway positive comment, can you "ISU FAN 1". Curious. Have you ever been to an ISU game in person?

He has and he writes a healthy check to the athletic dept.

Doesn't mean I agree with him.

I assume he's still at it. He thinks his donation makes him privileged

Humdinger, It's just that "ISU FAN 1" is posting constantly during just about every game, including the home games. If he actually attends games, I don't see how it can be very often. I will shut up about it. Sorry to talk about another poster.

Was at the game last night and what impressed me the most was the energy of the student section. Excellent turnout and they were into the game from the start. Good job by Red Alert. DM said on post game that they were noticeably energetic and how clearly they let the refs know about a few horrible calls. The possession reversal miscue should be placed on the refs. The ref clearly pointed to ISU. Then, as ISU was communicating with each other on a play, a Valpo guard just showed up and the ref just handed the ball to him. The ref seemed confused as he was handing the ball to him but by then everything was set in motion. Absolute breakdown by the refs. DM said in college basketball the rule is that the refs have to clearly communicate who has possession before each play which is different from the pros and international rules.

The second impressive thing was the defense. DM said that this was probably their best game defensively. Some Valpo fans sat near us and they got quieter and quieter as the game went on. Although David didn't score and sometimes goes for head fakes, he does alter shots and impacts the opponents offense. He got called for a bogus foul underneath the basket on the guard (I think he had #2) that always pushes off with his left arm (never got called for it once).

DM said he was happy with the offense in that they didn't take a lot of bad shots -- he said there were like 8 threes that were in and out and right on target but they just weren't falling. He knows the team usually wins by the long ball but was glad they worked inside and pulled out a win on their defense and inside game. Fayne was a beast -- wasn't going to be denied.

Malik had a great game and DM said he played hard the whole night which was a sign of encouragement. I saw at one time when MY had two turnovers in short amount of time that DM took him out. As MY was walking off the court his head was down and shoulders slumped. DM said something to him and animated for him to put his head up and raise his shoulders. Good encouragement to the young man who seems to thrive when his offense is working. MY is so smooth at driving and changing directions so quickly. Just needs to play controlled and not try to force stuff. He is an exceptional passer and fed Fayne all night.

They have practice for 2 days and then off to Mo State -- going to be a tough one. A couple of their guys have been injured and they might be back. As DM said, they need to take this type of effort on the road. Right now -- any win is good even if it is against a struggling Valpo team. Gotta stay out of Thursday night on the Lou.

Agreed. I was thinking maybe trying a look at the 3 with length over the other guards instead of playing at 4 or 5 where he gets burned down low could be an opportunity. We’ll see.

He more or less told him to pick his head up and hustle off the floor, as MY was walking slowly. I think that was a perfect time to take the kid out. He was ready to implode at that point.

This was easily the best defensive game I've seen them play all year. There are still too many times where all of our guards are letting guys get to the basket, but we played the zone exceptionally well tonight. Our bigs were helping out at good times. David needs to play more straight up when he is guarding the post, but that was me nitpicking tonight.

Offensively we almost looked like a different team. They were fun offensively, and this is kind of the team I've been waiting to see most of the year. I hope that we can keep this going. I would love to see Boogie and Madison drive more. I know we love the 3, but I think we can devastate teams if we drive.

Phil was an absolute beast. There was nothing I didn't like about his play last night. I hope the injury wasn't serious, because I think he is the linchpin for this team.

Key looked like early year Key.

The team played like a team from start to finish.

Williams dunk was sick, and I kind of want a signed poster of that. The guys were still yelling about it during the technical FTs.

Better play.

Valpo is the worst team in the league. Defensively they are bad. Smits is good. Guards weren’t as good as I thought would be.

Evans is definitely playing hurt. Still diving on floors. Respect.

Yarbrough played whole game. Still turns it over (many unforced) too much. We won’t beat the better teams until he cleans that up.

Fayne man among boys tonight.

Clarance ballhandling still looks suspect.

Ndaiye doesn’t do much for how much he plays.

Still waiting for Tinsley to show us all how much he wants to play here. Better but still a ways off from what he can really do I think.

Glad Muller reduced rotation. Concerning Bruninga did not play.

SIU wins at Mo St. Let’s see how mentally tough we are.

There are some insightful quotes in that article from Muller. Basically still hammering away that team doesn’t work hard and isn’t tough.

David does alter shots and that is great and needed desperately; however, he needs to help the guards better in the pick and roll up front. He too often stands behind the screen and doesn't show. The opposing guard drives close to the screen and is able to immediately drive to the basket. It would be wonderful if our guards could fight through the screens better but our bigs and in particular David need to flash on the other side of the screen and be a deterrent vs. an observer or matador. What's even better than guarding the rim is guarding the perimeter and interior passing lanes.

Ndaiye doesn’t do much for how much he plays.

Evans looked more mobile especially at the outset. He slipped.on a drive to the basket and went down. He was in pain but gutted it out.ii agree that he still isn't 100 percent.

Madison looked healed and.much better.

Agree on comment about David ... He is too inconsistent still. Given the competition, a 7 footer can't play that many minutes and have 0, 1 or 2 rebounds. It happens too often. Also, see my post on pick n roll.

So, you were at the game last night "ISU FAN 1"?.

I was not. I always choose my kids activities over ISU basketball, and that schedule took me out of town for the weekend. I gave my tickets away.
