Thought I would share. I like the way they break it into 3 groups. Youngstown st. pick up a lot, but they also lost a lot.

Here is FCS to FBS list .. 10 of 15 Austin Peay transfer were to UTEP, who just hired the Austin Peay HC .. wow, that is a program killer .. NCAA is no longer in charge of anything.

Here is FCS to FCS .. Garner Webb lost 20 of 21 to ETSU ,,, and yes, ETSU just hired GW's HC Tre Lamb .. wow, this is bad !!!!!

Note ISU lost just 1 player to FCS so far .. DB Jeff Bowen to ... you guessed it, Gardner Webb. GW is coming off their best season ever by far with 9-3 record, though very weak SOS .. still impressive. But that success is over. NCAA has zero control over the Portal .. coaches can move entire rosters with them.

This portal thing is even worse than I thought. I do support 1 free mulligan transfer plus a grad transfer, or if you get your schollie taken away of course. But coaches taking 10 to 20 players with them is nuts. Coaches will now get hired based on how many guys they can poach from their current team .. this is just awful.

ETSU HC Tre lamb and UTEP HC Scott Walden ... tamper much ???

ETSU and UTEP ... if they did it to their prior school, uh yeah, they will do it to you. Nice integrity people !!!

NCAA ... do you have any power left at all ??

But congrats to HC Spack ... he has only lost 1 so far .. Starter DB Jeff Bowen to Gardner Webb, but after they just lost their HC and 20 players to ETSU, he must be wondering about that decision. A few others have left or entered portal but no regulars, I believe.

Bottom line, we've lost 1 player .. so far. Portal was open Dec 4 to Jan 2 .. though I get some want to move in time for spring ball. It reopens April 15-30, which makes complete sense. But kind of mind blowing that NCAA allows and therefore encourages players to leave their teams during entire playoff schedule for FBS and FCS.

So to STLRBs point, the debacle coming out of the 2020 pandemic causing FCS to cancel the Fall 2020 season, then move it to Spring 2021. Followed by Spack's arguable decision to cancel the Spring 2021 season after 4 games ... we lost 9 underclassmen studs to FBS/NFL/FCS over that entire year .. and a few more to FCS/D-II, who were not yet regulars/starters and so left without fanfare. I saw an article indicating we lost 10 after the fall, and at least another 8 after the spring in a 4.27.20 article.

It did not reflect well on Spack as some players spoke out about their disappointment in Spack handling of players and cancelation of rest of spring.

But here we sit 3 years later, and the roster has been rebuilt (25 SRs, 30 JRs) and we have just 1 notable transfer so far. Maybe Spack has learned a "newer school" lesson in player handling, and the benefits of a "modern offense" ???

Yes, we're doomed .. lost 8 SRs and 4 starters !!!! And only return 25 SRs, and 30 JRs, and 17 starters. Lost 1 portal transfer .. egads !!!!! Only gained 7 transfers .... a paltry 5 FBS and measley 2 FCS transfers.

How we will ever recover ... we're doomed forever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More seriously .. main point is, we/Spack recovered from the mass exodus of 3 years ago .. that is factually indisputable ... and to be clear, a very good thing for Redbird fans who would like to win more.

Question ... if we do have a great year in 2024 ... will you and TBS be more or less miserable about football ?

It's a serious question.

I don't know why they need to "waste" their miserableness on the football board, there's plenty of it going on over on the hoops board. Take it over there!! ;)

Brock Spack has been head football coach at Illinois State since 2008. I expect the Redbirds to finish in the top three in the MVFC. There is zero reason why they shouldn’t. And I will be disappointed if they don’t finish top three in 2024. As far as the Covid year setting them back; every MVFC team faced the same circumstances. Since the 2015 Frisco season, the Redbirds have finished over .500 in conference only once (5-3 2019) and won 7 games overall only once (2019).
To answer your question: If the Redbirds finish top three (and at least make the quarterfinals) in 2024, I will be excited about the Redbirds going forward. If they have another season of 4-4 in Conference and lose to the likes of Eastern or Western Illinois, I will be excited about seeing who will replace Coach Spack for either the 2025 or 2026 season.

Yes, everyone faced the same circumstances, but that certainly doesn't mean everyone was impacted the same:

Aside from losing AAs RB Jams Robinson and DB Luthor Kirk to NFL after 2019, we also lost following underclassmen - all related to fall 2020 being canceled, followed by the 2021 spring debacle for ISU:

- DB JR Devin Taylor 3rd team AA in 2019... transferred to FBS Va Tech in fall 2020, started last 8 games - PANDEMIC

- DB SO Charles Woods Hero Soph AA in 2019 .. transferred to FBS UVA in fall 2021, started/made All Big 12 honorable mention - PANDEMIC & SPRING

- DB JR Christian Uphoff All MVFC HM in 2018, should have been 2019 for DB .. decided to prepare for draft, got UDFA from Packers, was one of last cuts who many local press people thought should make the roster, but didn't. - PANDEMIC

- DB RS FR Clayton Isbell Hero FR AA in 2019, All MVFC 2nd team in 2021 - transferred to Utah in fall 2022, started 1 game, since transferred to Coastal carolina and started all 13 games, led them in tackles with 89 (next guy had 68) and made 1st team all conference. Sun Belt Def player of week in game 1 for 9 tackles and 3 picks .. made ESPN news. Just declared for NFL draft. - PANDEMIC & FBS OPPORTUNITY

- DE JR Romeo McKnight All MVFC 1st Team in 2019, Hero FR AA 1st team in 2018 .. transferred to UNC Charlotte in 2020 (august), and started 5 of 6 games after showing up in August, made All Conf HM, got UDFA with Cleveland Browns, but now in CFL - PANDEMIC

- DT SO John Ridgeway Hero FR AA in 2018, All MVFC HM in 2019, Akk MVFC 1st team in spring 2021 - then transferred to Arkansas in fall 2021, started every game. Drafted 5th round by Cowboys, wound up getting claimed by Washington, has started 6 games in 2 years, has 55 tackles in 32 games, mostly as backup. - PANDEMIC & FBS OPPORTUNITY

- WR SO Taylor Grimes had a limited but very promising start - transferred to UIW in 2021, had 87 catches for 1145 yards 16 TDs an AA 2nd team, followed up in 2022 with 83 catches 1221 yards 15 TDs, several AA awards. UDFA with Broncos - PANDEMIC & SPRING

- WR FR Kacper Rutkiewicz also had promising but limited start - not how/why, but he left after fall 2021 and went to NIU fo r2 years, had 47 ctaches for 751 yards 8 TDs, plsu 7 carries for 59 yards, started 7 games in 2 seasons, finished 4th in receptions in 2023 despite missing 6 of 12 games. PANDEMIC & SPRING

- WR SO Andrew Edgar .. didn't transfer, but was another AA, but dealt with lot of injuries .. so we lost him too.

I don't imagine too many teams lost this many studs (All MVFCs and AAs) to FBS and NFL over the course of 12 months, most of which started at FBS level.

All of the above would have played in fall 2020, if not for pandemic. Many more left over similar period according to the other article I posted link to. Some would have developed, some not, and some left or got pushed out. But we were hurt way harder than most .. that is impressive list above.

So yeah, we went 5-10 in all of 2021 .. it was a lot.

Stopped reading you post after the Covid comment :sneaky:

But the latter part in bold I can 100% agree is very reasonable. Someone else said this and I agreed ... 2024 is a "no excuses season". They need to compete in upper third or better of MVFC (3rd place is not unreasonable) and make a quarterfinal run ... unless paired with an NDSU or SDSU in round of 16. That said, I do think a top 8 seed should be the stretch goal .. way too early to be predicting top 8 seed year .. need to see how things go at QB.\ and during spring, and with inevitable defections.

My quick take on 2024 MVFC .. way too early, but this is what Im hearing and seeing so far:

1. NDSU .. lot coming back
2. SDSU .. they could drop to 3rd having lost so many stud SRs, many being 6th year SRs.
3. ISUr/USD .. both have a lot coming back, though I don't see USD having as much
5. UNI/SIU .. they will be tough again, but not sure about top 4 in MVFC.
7. YSU/UND/MoST .. both YSU and UND are seeing many defections
10. MuST/ISUb

1. WIU .... in OVC !!!

Farewell to Leathernecks and Lawson .. though we do play again next fall, it will be non-conference.

Thanks for doing this! I recalled the defections being a gut punch, and the second wave after the season left me thinking, yeah, that might as well happen, too. But to slough off the events of '20 by saying that every team had to deal w the pandemic is facile.
