So Basically if ISU goes after 1 of these so call Big School QB’s etc 4star guys we are basically saying we don’t believe in the guy we presently have etc. Which again I emphasize It’s Tommy Rittenhouse JOB to lose. He has been there and waited his turn show he can produce. Which I don’t care if it was any player on ISU roster who has produce help the team and been thru the gauntlet. The Coaching staff as well as fans should respect those players.
I have to wonder if you understand college athletics. I completely respect Tommy Rittenhouse and I look forward to seeing him play in '24 but there a couple of realities of college football in play here.

1) QB's get injured. Annexstad didn't finish the season in '22 and '23. Both times Rittenhouse was called on to start. Now Tommy could be the starter. He's a smaller QB that likes to run. He has to run to be fully effective and there may be times when we need every last yard for a 1st down or a TD and he can't slide. When Rittenhouse (more likely than IF) gets injured we need another starter to step in.

2) Ignore QB's in the portal? NO WAY! You think other teams are doing that? NO WAY! When you join a team, you should know that they are going to continue to recruit and they're going to bring in the best players they can get every year. If we can find a QB better than Rittenhouse do you think Coach Spack will turn him down? NO FRANKLIN WAY! We have posters climbing all over his back for being mediocre. If he can find a QB that gives us a better chance at a Championship he's doing it. Of course he has to win the job in practice just like Annexstad did. If we have players that don't like being recruited over they can leave. They're going to find that every other school does the same thing. It's not complicated. Best players play and every year you recruit the best players you can get. That's the reality.

And yes, sometimes players disagree with the coaching staff on who deserves playing time. Again, I think you can find at least one player that feels that way on every team. If that player wants to leave, the portal gives him that chance. When you factor in injuries, I think we played the best players at QB and WR this past season. If someone is due more playing time next year, then I like Rylan Crawford. That dude threw some blocks.

Agree w/ TR .. I'm all for rewarding loyalty and homegrown guys. But it's D-I college athletics and portal is an unfortunately a prominent reality. If we sit pat, this will only ensure we lose more good players than we find .. and then we will end up with no depth, as TR said .. no special rules for QB depth other than maybe continuity and chemistry come into play when assessing that position.

But our history ay that position is not good .. this year was highly unusual in that we had a very good #1 and a good/ready #2. In theory, you also want to have a #3 QB who is younger promising prospect you are grooming.

That said .. the coaches need to recruit portal where it makes sense. IN other words, they need to be careful about chasing away their home grown guys .. which is RB15's point. But that is a position by position calculation, and season by season. And you don't want to bring in a SR and out off some JR's high hopes for reps .. unless they feel we don't have enough at that position. QB is the toughest one .. because the reps usually go 100% to 1 guy. Same maybe for OL to large extent. But most other positions, you can rotate and platoon.

But they have to fill where there are needs.

Really hoping OC Peterson is around for a couple more seasons to finish what he started here. He has bounced around a lot .. he could remake himself here and help a lot towards recruitment of HS and Portal. And now we have an IPF .. might get a few more in january.

Let me jump in the parade too - I hate the NIL and hate the portal and what is becoming of college sports. But getting transfers and recruits is nothing new, happens every year in every sport and you know it's coming. If a 4-star HS QB decided he really liked OC Peterson and the business school or ag school or what have you at ISU and said he was coming, some current player could be threatened. So, bringing in a transfer is the same, except the guy is older. Rittenhouse beat out some other freshmen a couple years ago and they left and he beat out the Valpo guy who had more experience and so it goes.

I'll link a story from today's Madison paper, a story that I hate to read because it's a statement about the current state of affairs. A HS kid, with an agent, and a momma, and the claim he isn't looking at NIL in the decision to transfer, but he's going to keep looking after telling the UW coaches he was on board, blah blah blah. We're in a world of hurt IMHO.

The Coaching staff as well as fans should respect those players. Not just throw them to the side with next man up attitude without actually having players compete and pencils guys in just because of stats/former schools/friends etc ! Those are some of the reasons kids hit the portal who really want to be on teams but are not given opportunity which in turn also rub some of their team mates the wrong way knowing the team could be better with certain guys playing but we’re not given a fair shot !
Makes sense but what is a coach suppose to do?..if a coach is not trying to upgrade/add depth the minute the portal opens they may be falling behind as how do they know the current qb in waiting isn’t going to suddenly change their mind and hit the portal? It is a very fluid and difficult situation for coaches.

Madbird when you say “we are in a world of hurt” who is “we”? Isn’t NIL and the transfer portal suppose to benefit the student athlete?

Right. And he isn't being promised a starting position, just a chance to compete for one. They like what they've seen on film as they do with players coming out of HS.
We he has other FBS offers so it remains to be seen if he comes back to his home state. You said that a chance to COMPETE !

Well, we = "everybody" who's involved in college sports. It's chaos out there, it seems. Teams are going through turmoil - guys coming, guys going. We're talking on here about a guy who's waited his turn to be QB, improve his game, etc. and yet "we're" all saying, let's hit the portal for a FBS transfer. Some guys are going to benefit from NIL, but not all. Teams are gonna have a QB and a RB and a WR and an edge rusher dragging down a million or two or half million or whatever the going rate is, but the center or second string DB etc. is gonna get jack. So you're setting up a system of. "compensation" that's not equal - different from the days when everybody got a schollie and it was all the same, no favorites. Can't be good for morale, camaraderie, etc.

Where does the NIL dough come from? Doesn't drop out of the sky. Donors, regular people, are gonna have to give up more money to support old state U (not necessarily old ISU). Gonna get squeezed.

People wanna transfer, fine, they've always had that option. But now its set up to just be a cattle call. No loyalty.

My naive, old school solution is not to spread the money around, but take the money out of it. No reason a college coach should be paid $5 million or $1 million. No reason you should have to pony up thousands of dollars in donations for the right to spend thousands of dollars for tickets (not so much at our level, but at the FBS level). You get my point. I know the cow is out of the barn.

I can't write an essay to explain all my feelings, but when I say "world of hurt" I just mean college athletics as we've known it is being blown up, and I don't see it getting "better" - different, but more expensive, less "athletic" and more professional, etc. All my opinion of course. I don't think a lot of people realize what's slipping away.

Redbirds are pursuing another Washington State DT. Souza has 2 years of eligibility. He has had a parallel career to Jake Siegal. Like Siegal, Souza joined Washington State as a preferred walk on. Both redshirted, then "played" for 2 seasons before hitting the portal. Souza is from the state of Washington while Siegal is from Sycamore, IL.

DT Jake Siegal transferred from Washington State before the 2022 season and has seen relatively limited action so far. 8 games played and 5 tackles in 2 seasons.

I think the level of counters a bit different, and there's no guarantee of playing the NFL
