Rey looked pretty decent. We sure don't need the chest beating routine after the impressive dunk - that will get him in Dan's doghouse
along with a Technical. ....

Review:

There was a lot of street ball played last night. So much in fact, that I believe Muller spent the final 7 or so minutes of the game leaning up against the scorers table with his legs and arms crossed, and didn't appear to be doing any sort of coaching. Not an issue with a D2 exhibition. Muller clearly saw everything he needed to.

Overall, the offense included the same set over and over. I know they weren't going to show anything and they really didn't. The base offensive set was 4 outside the perimeter, and the post (Phil or Rey) would flash up from the low post to set a pick in the high post, then the ball handler would hand the ball to the screen setter, and then come back around looking to drive, kick out, or hit the post has he dove towards the basket. Interesting sets like this enable options including 3 guys to shoot the 3, and 2 towards the basket. Once we actually show more offense, I'm sure there will be more movement than just the three standing outside the 3 pt line.

Defensively, man defense was weak but will get better over the season and when there is a full team. The zone was good, but it also helps Lewis went ice cold in the second half. They got it in the middle a few times and missed point blank looks.

We know what Hein is, so there is no need beat a dead horse. The kid is a fighter, gritty, gutty, determined, and a clear coach's son (any other cliches would be welcomed). He does dribble way too much with very little plan. I always say he cancels himself out. For every bad turnover, he will have a great hustle play.

Fayne was double teamed a lot of the game and still score in the 20's and I don't think he was pressing all that hard. I think he was giving about 70% effort.

Boogie looked good. Really comfortable and confident in both the offense and defense. Last year he would never pull up and always have to shoot off a pass. He showed yesterday if he has the ball, he is a threat to shoot.

Copeland, as others have said was pressing. You could tell he was excited to play his first game in like 20 months or whatever it is. He came out and missed a 3 bad and dropped his head a bit. He ran the point most of the night and though some are critical about his skill there, I think he is capable. You could tell he had much more of a grasp of the offense that a few other guards in the game. He had to call out plays 3 or 4 times on some possessions before some would get into positions. Many have mentioned his 3pt ability and that he is not a knock down shooter. He shot over 40 percent from 3 in JuCo, and over 50% from the floor all together. He is not just a 3pt shooter and showed that he can slash and score. Reminds me a bit of a less explosive DAP. The one criticism of his PG skills, and you could tell he was just trying to have fun, was that he was trying to be a fancy dribbler and crossover everyone. He has really good handles if he just cut that out. He got pick pocketed two or three times doing that.

I don't understand the criticism of Chastain. Again, first game in two years and it seems some were expecting him to go off for 30. He didn't have the ball in his hands much, only taking four shots. When he did, he was making the smart play instead of forcing something up. Seven points on four shots is pretty efficient for guy coming back like that. He played solid defense, but was only credited with three rebounds. He went after a lot and got hands on the ball for another teammate to rebound it. His athleticism continues to amaze me too. He gets his head at the rim with ease. If he stays health, he will be a key contributor for the team.

Jefferson was a surprise. He was very good defensively. Many, including myself expected him just to be a three point shooter, but instead, he showed a really nice ability to drive. I don't think he will be a starter, just because Muller likes to have that spark off the bench.

Ike showed looked more comfortable too offensively and defensively. If we plan to play a lot of zone, he could snag some minutes. But depth may push him further down the bench.

Rey is the most ready freshman big man we have had since Jackie Carmichael. His hustle, competitiveness, and size cannot be taught. Some poo-pooed his post dunk antics- get over it. It was an exhibition and some of his first college points. I bet most, including myself, would have done the exact same thing. Basketball is an exciting game, and one of emotion. It got him excited. I'm sure Muller told him that can't happen in real games. He has some huge hands, just needs to hang on to that ball a little better. That will come as the season progresses.

Overall thoughts, I was pleased with the final outcome and generally impressed with the new guys. I was surprised the Birds pulled away in the second with ease. Only having 8 players, really 7 with Hein on the shelf had to be difficult. The most interesting optic of the night was when the eight active players ran out for the first time, followed by nine guys in sweats.

Saturday's game against Auggie will likely put the starting five we expect Key, Copeland, Boogie, Milik and Phil. Followed by Josh, Chastain, Rey, Ike, and I assume Hein will be down for a little bit.

It's brand new LED lighting that will be completed in the next few weeks. Energy efficient, and they will come up immediately after starting lineups.

may even be able to change colors
