Anyone else notice Rey walking gingerly through the line like something was hurting?

I thought he looked a little gimpy at times too...

JJ can really shoot. First game didn't bother him at all. Looked completely poised. I saw him shooting before the game and he was nailing most of them. Can he also play point? It seems like a good spot for him cause he looked really quick. Seems like he could be a better point than Copeland.

Rey landed on his backside pretty hard on the same play he hurt his wrist. After it he was walking a little more stiffly, but also after that he seemed to loosen up a bit. I don't think it is going to be something that slows him down.

Speaking of Rey, I think he spent the first half figuring out what the college game is going to be about, and adjusted well in the second half. I agree the kid is going to be good. I think he is going to develop a good back to the basket game.

JJ - Probably the most ready for last night. He has a smooth shot, and seems to have that killer instinct. If we drive more or our bigs start drawing double teams, JJ is probably going to kill other teams from the perimeter

Fayne - I thought he looked improved overall. They were doubling him a lot and he was fighting through. I'd like to see him go after defensive rebounds more agressively, but if we can get Rey boxing out and Milik/Chastain/Boogie to attack the defensive boards I'd be alright with that. I think he will be our linchpin this year. As he goes, we go.

Chastain - I think they were taking it easy on him as his first game back in two years from a major knee injury. That said, I think the attempted alley oop in the first half to him was a good sign. I like that he goes after rebounds, and I think he has a smooth jumper. If his knee holds up, I think he will be solid by the end of the year.

Copeland - I think Copeland came in last night and forced it early, but once he started to settle in he looked better. I don't mind him at the point, but I think quick guards are going to give him fits. I like his shot off the dribble, and I think as he settles in, he's going to be a good compliment to the Big 3.

Boogie - I still think he is our best overall defender. He still looks like he is forcing his 3 point shot, and with his size and athleticism I'd like to see him be more aggressive going to the bucket.

Gassman - I liked how he looked overall. He's a good shooter, and he could be a good guy to hit off dribble penetration and double teams.

Hein - Kid is tough, his sprain didn't look good, but he fought through it. I respect the crap out of him and I think he will help when he gets the chance. I thought he played better D with his feet, and I think he has a great floater

Team Defense - Our biggest weakness right now is our defense. We aren't a fast team outside of JJ right now, and dribble penetration is going to kill us. We have length but we don't seem to use, and cross court passes are going to kill us. Our zone looked better, but Lewis ran out of gas in the second half as well.

Team Offense - We seem like we are going to rely on the 3 a lot, probably more than we should. With this team's athleticism I'd love to see our guards penetrate more, and make a living at the line. I'm hoping that's what MY will bring when he is back.

Students - Special shout out to the student section who I thought was vocal, and creative last night. I wish more of them would come out, because they could give us a huge home court advantage. Favorite chant was "No Fly Zone" when the Flyers were shooting free throws. Kudos students, keep it up!

Viewing the game pics was fun, this morn. goredbirds had each player on court, no true action, no other players (boring but mom and dad would be happy). The vidette was more a two/three man pic. Great pic of Fayne (he may be the new glisten man)...One of Fayne's pics morphed right into my favorite Jackie Carmichael pic. The Pantagraph pics were more theatrical...good job.

Is Jefferson a threat to win the 5th starting spot over Copeland?

Does Rey look better than King David? Wondering if he is an upgrade, downgrade or neutral if we're talking strictly this year (not his potential).

OMG LOL. Rey runs circles around David. And looks like he ate David. Massive upgrade. Bruninga might have trouble finding minutes once he comes back. I'd stow him away as the last person off the bench and hope the team remains healthy so you can redshirt him this season.

That's good to hear, we got killed when Fayne was on the bench last year.

I doubt Jefferson wins starting point but he definitely could eventually. And, is probably a lock to win it next season. Next seasons starting lineup will be in my opinion:

5 - Rey/Bruninga/Fisher
4 - N'Diaye/Bruninga/Chastain
3 - Fisher/Chastain/Bruninga/Gassman
2 - Copeland/Boyd/Hein/Gassman/Hillsman
1 - Jefferson/Hillsman/Hein/Donnelly/Horne

Need at least another big man...and Payton :)
Right now 13 players for next season but that will change. I could see Gassman or Bruninga transferring.
Hell, if Rey has a good year I could see him transferring to a P5.

Generally speaking if the zone defense looks "TONS" better than man to man defense then ISU collectively does not have good defenders. The zone is masking the individual defensive shortcomings. Milik out on the court will be a big difference as he has the athleticism and size/strength and I would guess he is ISU 's overall best defender...obviously especially when playing man to man defense.

Speaking of potential redshirts, I know the rules for redshirting in football have changed as to how many games a kid could play. Has that changed for basketball too?

Not trying to start a discussion if redshirting is good or bad, just hoping for a rule clarification please.

I thought last night was a good showing for everyone, but I wouldn't want to rush to quick judgments on any player. I remember last season Tinsley looked amazing in the exhibition game against Lewis and then struggled to adjust until midway through the season. Copeland looks like he might be the 2nd best passer on the team behind Milik. A lot of his turnovers reminded me of Milik's last year. I don't mind Copeland and Milik running the point and having Evans and Tinsley on the wings. It should lead to a lot of good looks for both players.

I think the bench will be deeper this year. It appears everyone but Rey and Fayne will be able to shoot from 3. I liked the the ball movement and it seemed like we were getting good shots all game. There wasn't too many forced 3's, most of them were wide open.

I know Hein and Gassman are not the most physically gifted players on the team, but I do love watching them make all of the hustle plays. Hein does a great job of getting in passing lanes and making deflections and Gassman always seems to be in the right position for rebounds. You need those types of players on your team.

This is the first team in a long time where I feel comfortable about having any player on the court. It will be interesting to see what this team looks like when Milik and Evans are playing. I am very interested to see what kind of improvement they will show this year.

Agree with most of the above. Disappointed in our slow start & overall in our defensive lapses (although the 2nd half zone was better)- but there was plenty to like too. Jefferson will help us- Rey looks good for a freshman (but needs to cease the fist- chest beating) & Chastain looks like he can contribute along with Tinsley & Phil looked solid. Putting Evans at point should help Copeland's offense & adding Evans & Milik & eventually Taylor (if he does not redshirt) will make a big difference. Nice to see Madison on the bench & involved too. I also did not mind not having the upper bowl semi- dark. Anxious to see us closer to full strength- hopefully next Tuesday!

they didn't foul in zone either. if they can keep it at 3/4 personal fouls per half that will be huge. 10 overall is not horrible though. big improvement from last season even with 10 per game.

Milik is probably best defender WHEN ENGAGED. However you don't know who's gonna show up (i love ya Milik) so Tins gets the nod from me for his length strength attitude and mojo. But really Tins and Milik and J-Jeff and Copeland and Fayne all play solid D.

I like Gass alot. He was really a pleasant surprise for me...he proved last year he can hit a shot in tough game action. He may not play a bunch, but he'll hit some big 3's for us.

I think past history and Dan's comments before the season show he wants to run zone more than man. It's a coaching choice. Not because we aren't good. Much like Syracuse chooses to run it.

Note: not comparing our zone to SU's, just saying they choose to.

There is so much to respond to on this thread regarding last night's game but this one takes the cake. After one exhibition game against a D2, a true freshman is going to transfer to a P5..... WOW.

I know in the landscape of college basketball this thing happens, but to suggest it now is absurd. That, and add the fact that Rey is more pro-ISU than any recruit we have had in a LONG TIME, or in the Social Media Era. When he committed he became very active on social media, following all of the other teams, all his teammates, etc. I don't think this is an appropriate time to discuss potential transfers out of the program.

My only issue with their defense sets is they always seem to allow for an open man in the corner. They must have had taken 50 open shots from the corner.

My thoughts have already been said...Rey is going to be a beast and I think can make an immediate impact. ZC looked a little rusty but that’ll come off. Jefferson IMO could compete for newcomer if the year. Phil, Boogie and Hein all looked like what I expected. I thought Gassman’s shooting form has greatly improved.

It's a message board. any time is appropriate to express an opinion. lighten up. you don't have to agree but to tell me I'm doing something inappropriate or inherently "bad" is a joke. its a pretty broad statement that really could be applied to about anyone in the country not something sacrilege.

This team put up 80 without Key, Milik or TB.

Anyone who had any real worry probably shouldn't be. Anyone who is upset that MY and Key were held out needs to understand that the ENTIRE REASON for this game was to get game action minutes for Rey, JJ, Chastain and Copeland.

The only think I wish were there were Elijah Clarence, but that is just me pining.

Love what I've seen so far.

I kinda forgot how foul prone we were last year. It wasn't just a shortened bench, but also about guys fouling out way too much.
