Would like to see a few more runs from McCloyn & Brown, and a couple more read options from Jefferson.

Very surprised weve not seen any of our FR RBs at this point. Obviously not ready for prime time yet.

Couple quick thoughts:

Don't want to dog the OVC, don't know enough about them, but I was thinking while watching, these guys are back to back playoff team from the OVC, champs, and you know, our much-maligned OL was just pushing them around, and our tough D shutting them down.

They beat the tar outta SIU; and that’s a tough team. I think SIU was tryptophan figure some things out still, but that also can say a lot about losing your starting QB to injury, right before playoffs.
Hats off to their backup. I don’t think he was bad and looked better than our backups (in their first games).
No knock to BJ, showed he was a player yesterday.

I think what happened yesterday was due to a few things:

1. full week of preparation and game planning with QB Jefferson for SEMO must have gone well .. kudos to Coaches and Jefferson

2. the difference in the level of line play in MVFC vs OVC .. that and position wise their personnel was more a 3-3-5, with the 2 OLBs playing up (undersized DEs) and couple DBs filling in behind them as undersized LBers. So other than the middle 3 DL, they were an undersized front 7 .. making for easier blocks for our 2 TEs and FB IMO. Robinson had a lot of room getting past their LOS most of the game.

3. the pressure seemed to be off after a very tense 2 weeks dealing with Brady injury, no apparent #2 and tyring to earn a top 8 seed ... it was too much and we just played tight the last 2 weeks IMO. Spack can be very hard on QBs psyche.

Yesterday the planets seemed to align and Jefferson with a full week of prep, who only had a couple great plays, managed a great game with no mistakes. It just seemed like everyone was playing looser and executing as a result. Obviously, I can't know something like this ... but we looked completely under control the whole game. And frankly, if not for 3 specific missed calls, we could have won that game 31-0.

Reminder, the SEMO run defense ranked 33rd in yards per game, right behind NDSU and SDSU at 28th and 29th. SEMO pass defense ranked 15th in QBR. The main difference being the level of play in MVFC vs OV, and how well we executed the game plan.

Now the offense's confidence is building, as is Jefferson's comfort level in that offense ... and we play a team similar to SEMO in that they did not dominate their opponents statistically. They are a very good passing team, but otherise average to below average everywhere else. Like SEMO, they just found ways to win in Southland.

Can't expect Robinson to gain 297 yards again next week. But Southland is a pass happy conference for most part. The one team that runs the most/best is Nicholls St .. who beat UCA by 20 and dominated them in run game.

Is that 3 :text-+1: for every bad call that cost us points ??

Spack will send in several bad calls this week, 3 cost us points:

- the incomplete pass vs fumble, took 7 points off scoreboard. There is no way that was incomplete pass .. he caught it, turned up field, got hit and then ball was stripped on way down .. and the reversed it after a very very long review .. must have been looking real hard to reverse that one.
- the 2 holds on their fake punt run for 30+ yards that resulted in a FG .. I didn't see these, but Bison poster claimed it
- the blatant offensive PI on their 40+ yard plass play that resuled in their other FG .. I saw this one, it was blatant push and our DB fell straight back with official right there.

3 key missed calls and 24-6 becomes at least 31-0, or worse.

There was an obvious missed call early. One of their defenders came across the line and made contact with our guy before the ball was snapped...right in front of the line judge. He had to be daydreaming to miss it. Spack was so hot that an assistant coach was restraining him. This might have been the worst non call of the day because it was so easy to make.

Not sure why the overturned fumble is being called an incomplete pass here and in the statistics. The kickoff return was to the 28 yard line. The pass was caught and the receiver tackled right at the 25. The next play is 2nd and 13 from the 25. While we couldn't hear the explanation, it is clear that they called it a catch and that the runner was down at the 25.

Watching live from the visitors side, I was confident that our db was pushed down on the not offensive pass interference call. When I watched the replay it wasn't as obvious. Maybe it was the different angle, maybe it was that the replay doesn't show the two jostling for position for as long as we could see it live. But I do think it is usually called PI.

Don’t forget the blatant defensive PI against I believe Edgar in the 4th on 3rd down.

I have always hated replay officiating. To me, it takes all the excitement out of a game, slows the game down and can stop the momentum from a team. A replay is not 100% accurate as we saw yesterday. I have seen some articles this season about replay in the NFL and I am in agreement. Replay should only overturn a call on the field when it is clear and obvious. When you have to freeze-frame plays in microseconds and make a decision you should let the call on the field stand. The fumble return for a TD yesterday was an example to me. I watched the replay and it certainly looked as if the player had the ball and then he started to lose control after contact and before his knee was down. Was there clear and obvious evidence that it was an incomplete pass? Not from what I saw. Granted I am a Redbird fan but I have seen the same type of calls from replay officials in games I have no favorite one way or the other. If it is obvious then change the call but only when it is clear. I just hate it. A big play, everyone gets excited and then the most irritating words in all of sports..."the previous play is under further review." Everyone sits down, the air is let out of the balloon and the excitement of the moment (why we really watch sports in the first place) is gone! Poof! The Zebra in the booth has taken over the game and the humans on the field again bow to cameras. I just hate it .

Bit unexpected but very impressive win. Redbirds dominated the game and Jefferson was solid. Coupled with the women winning the volleyball title in similar dominating fashion a very good day for Redbird athletics

I know of 3 off the top if my head that were terrible.
1. The fumble that was overturned.
2. On a 3rd and 8 Jafferson dropped back to pass and the db for SEMO just shoved him to the ground. The ESPN3 announcers said little contact but not a penalty. On replay with Randy Reinhart son doing video the db clearly shoved Austin Nagle to the ground before the pass arrives. Should have been a pass interference but we punted at the SEMO 35 yard line instead.
3. After the SEMO qb Santa got trucked by Luther Kirk he takes off his helmet and slams it to the ground. That should have been unsportsmanlike conduct and 15 yard penalty.

I don't recall noticing that one or not. But people on AGS were ripping the officiating and noted it was a Colonial crew ... makes it a tad more interesting.

Hate to go all sour grapes, especially after a nice win ... but it was bad yesterday. And those refs have to be reprimanded. Spack will submit tape on many calls, and he usually reports out on whether the league admits screwed up calls.

Still not as bad as 2010 EIU with the OT game .... my all time favorite worst officiated game ever. it was comical .. way worse than yesterday.

My favorite bad call being when we chased Garrapolo out of bounds several yards short on a 3rd and long, and on the EIU sideline where the chain guy had to drop the chains to avoid contact. The EIU punt team literally ran onto the field, but ref placed to ball 2 yards forward, never looked to reset or check the first down .... EIU coaches were screaming at their punt team to get off the field.

For the day, I think they call 29 penalties on us, enforcing like 22. What made that funnier was we were #1 in FCS as least penalized team going into that game .... ah, memories !!

I agree the referees were HORRIBLE missing:
- Robinson getting pulled down by the face mask on the first long run.
- The scoop and score was the right call. The Referee on the Field should have veto power over the replay ref.
- #3 on SEMO pulling Jefferson's helmet off and throwing it - then forcing Jefferson to leave for a third down play.
- SEMO QB taking off his helmet after the sack and screaming.
- the Offensive pass interference on #6 - just shoved our guy down to make the catch.

Since these refs were assigned by the NCAA - who do you complain to? Who do send tape to? Heck, give me an email address and I will send an email to whomever to encourage them to review those plays.
