From my experience, putting faith in "wake up calls" by angry coaches, or using past outcomes as a motivational tool, is way overrated. You either have the horses or you don't. We (the fans) have been deceived into thinking we do.

It's hard to see a path this week, other than the Birds getting a big-time wake-up call from Coach Spark in terms of attitude/fight, and the coaching staff getting a "game-planning" wake-up call from some hard film study.

IF that all comes to pass, there's hope.

Trying to be optimistic, USD only beat the Turkeynecks by 5 in Macomb. Depending on your perspective, the glass is half full or half empty - WIU scored 4 TD's in the last 20 minutes of the game to make it close. So, was USD "playing it safe"? Or did the real WIU show up late? Can we assume USD can be scored upon late?

And beat YSU by 3 at home. USD needed a FG at the final gun to break the tie and win. Now, we can probably assume we're no YSU. But we know you can stay with USD if you've got what it takes.

So, they handled InSU and NoDakota pretty easily (and Drake too), and had pretty good contests all the way through with YSU and WIU. Don't know what to make of their win vs. Bowling Green - BGSU is 1-6 so far.

I don't see much hopeful in the stats - USD has some gaudy offensive stats - BUT, opponents are 16-16 in the red zone. The QB is the leading rusher, plus 1800+ yards passing. Pretty easy to see what has to be done, gotta get the job done on Mr. Streveler.

So, my half-empty prediction is:
Coyotes -- 41
Hurting Birds -- 20

My half-full, Homecoming, butt-chewed-out-by Spack prediction:
Scrawny prairie Dogs - 31
Rising Redbirds - 34

Couple things. I was kind of frustrated with Kolbe (although receivers in first half dropped or let the ball go through their fingers on four or five occasions) and then later in the game, on a long Robinson breakaway TD run...he's running with him practically stride for stride FREAKING BLOCKING FOR HIM. While our QB play is suspect, that kid won me over right there.

SD's quarterback is one cool, composed and slippery cucumber.

I thought that guy from NAU was tougher... but you’ll probably see Streveler on Sundays.

What a great win. I can't remember a time when the birds have beaten a top 4 team. Maybe in 2014?
I really hope this rights the ship. This is a good time to start playing tough!
2014 - Beat Univ New Hampshire - the #1 Seed - in FCS Semis. That was our ticket to Frisco.

We have played like 100% horseshit the last two weeks. That changes this week. If he plays poorly again then it's time for Jake to see the pines once and for all.
Hell of a prediction!

Great game today. Finally the running game really got going. Coyotes QB is really good. We did a really good on their running game.

Some really interesting flags called / not called. Some equally interesting spots as well by the refs.

Not sure what coyotes coach was thinking saving his timeouts like he did.

Great win by the Redbirds. Still left points on the field and turnovers and penalties were a problem for both teams but a win over the #4 team in the nation is a big accomplishment. Running game was solid today so kudos to the O-Line. Schnell was amazing today and Kolbe played very well. Big win.

We beat #1 New Hampshire in 2014. We also knocked off #1 SIU, #2 McNeese State, and #4 WIU plus several other top-5 teams.

More likely see Cookus. NFL eats up guys like Streveler .. we had 15 QBHs and hit him hard so many times. He slipped away several times to his credit .. or we would have had 6-7 sacks instead of 2. But he only had that one 22 yard run on 3rd and 12. He had a nice game but we put a beating on him. Was relieved there were no targeting caps this week with as many time as we hit him as he threw ball on run.

I also noticed several odd ball placements by officials .. mostly against us.

But great game for our Redbirds .. and overall liked the play calling this week. OL and WR groups need lot of work .. yet we won thanks to RBs performance .. Robinson was absolutely dominant. Smith was also a beast. OL caved at times but did open just enough holes to give us a fitting chance .. so kudos to OL and OC this week. Butt today as about RBs and front 7 .. just phenomenal !!

What is with this trash lately? IS this why a lot of the long time posters don't post here anymore? Literally NO class.

I think this win saved our season. It was essentially a must-win and the Birds came out strong. Spack had a good quote in psot game - Winning like this is way better than winning big...the team had to readjust mid game and it seemed to pay off.

Some thoughts:

As always, a great time at homecoming for my family. This year we had my wife, my 3 year old and our 7 week old, with my parents along to help out as well. For all of you parents out there, you can probably hear the circus music playing in your head. Anyways, everyone enjoyed hoopfest, the parade and tent zone. Homecoming is always a great event and a good chance to catch up with old friends and professors. I saw a couple posters during the weekend but missed way too many. My son and I plan on heading down for NDSU and will do our best to stop by Cindygate for a hello to many of you. My ONLY complaint was that I had to wage a 5 minute battle with security about bringing in a diaper bag (it’s a backpack style) but ultimately, after 3 supervisors, they checked it out and let us in.

Back to the game:
I said before, the DL needs to keep the USD under wraps and make their tackles when they get the opportunity and they did a good job of it. It felt like he was running for his life often enough, and some of that has a lot to do with the defensive backs having good coverage as well.

Offensive line had to step up but wow there were some holes for that stable of backs to run through. They gave Jake time to find the open Schnell...I mean receiver. I was satisfied with the playcalling for the most part, ESPECIALLY on the QB draw that sprung Kolbe for a first down when they brought the LB blitz.

Special teams: Slattery was perfect on the afternoon. Breen did a good job punting the ball, low and under the wind when it was against him and arcing with the wind when he had it. Some solid returns and no bad decisions in the return game.

Overall, exactly what the doctor ordered. A solid, albeit not perfect, game in all 3 phases against the #4 team in the country on a beautiful homecoming afternoon. Even more importantly, a W.

It was sort of a "classic" Redbird game to me. You're sitting there watching passes being dropped, RB's dropped for losses behind the line on sweeps, no holes up the middle, 7 yard passes on 3rd and 15, sieve DB play and coverage in the middle by LB's - and then you look up at the scoreboard and we have the #4 team in the country down and we have 500 yds. total offense and a couple interceptions and a couple nice long runs and TD passes and you think, what was I just watching!!!

Great effort on homecoming by the Birds. In reference to my paragraph above, we/I focus on the negative in many areas, but: Kolbe throws some nice passes. He can zip in where it needs to be. Some times. The line looks "weak" at times, but then there's a huge hole and J Rob or Smith bust through it and be gone. Schnell is a nice player. All the experts in my section were commenting on the "no look for the ball" DB play. Geez that looks so bad when it happens. But then we bust up passes when we need to.

Hopefully it doesn't stop here.
