Walk ons play just as hard at practice and spend just as much time at basketball as a scholarship player. Their job is to selflessly make everyone else better. Why would you not throw a kid a bone if you have one available. It's not like the student body"s going to get a refund for an unused scholarship. And you might just keep a kid around who gets on the floor down the road like Gassman did.
I hear you Timmy and do understand your perspective. If we had a kid that was a walk-on a year or two and was value add with the intangibles then I agree 100 percent with your perspective. However if a kid is going to be a PWO for the first time or maybe the kid does not lead or contribute with the intangibles then I would probably pocket the Schollie. Agree with throwing the kid a bone but at same time they need to earn that bone first

Kid's got all summer to prove himself. If he's worthy of a "bone" and we still have a schollie . . . I would make the spring semester conditional should a valuable mid-season transfer becomes available to the Birds.

How has an incoming freshman earned that "bone" over the walk on? Have either shown ISU anything besides what they do in high school? Maybe we shouldn't give freshman scholarships at all?

Their talent or perceived talent as determined by the ISU coaches has earned them a scholarship.

If you want to hear the reasoning behind is original selection of WSU. It starts around the 4:45 mark.

Nice player. I remember us recruiting him last year. But this makes zero sense to me.

Dan is once again banking on receiving a favorable ruling on a petition to the NCAA. I’m still trying to remember which one of the previous ones have ever gone our way.

This team needs immediate help at a critical position and once again Dan has put the outcome squarely in a 3rd party’s hands.

I don’t understand. I hope it works. I hope he’s eligible this year. If not, the roster is once again short before fall conditioning even begins.

It does make sense. Right now, all we have is a freshmen and a PWO at PG (unless you count Copeland). Torres is probably our best available option so might as well try and see if he can be eligible. Plus, we still have an open scholarship that, in theory, could go to another PG. Even if it doesn't, or even if he isn't eligible, it still makes sense. I would rather have an ineligible, veteran PG on the team to help the freshman and PWO. It's better than having three eligible PG's that aren't ready (maybe not even capable) to be a D-1 starting PG, and way better than having only two.
My guess is Muller probably got to the point where any of the available PG's were either not interested, not good enough, or for sure not eligible. So he went with Torres. Makes sense.

Yeah, no surprise there. Muller would've had to be very confident to lean off Greenlee/Mitchell in favor of Torres.

Awesome! Looking forward to seeing Ricky and his son on the floor. DJ can learn how to be a PG . . . and take notes on future fatherhood . . .

In that case, might as well just turn this program into an intramural squad.

Like last season?

not certain what is going on but sounds like Torres may unfortunately be out recovering for some lengthy period of time. Every team will most likely have as few as 1 or as many as 4 players out at any given time with injuries of various durations. Hence why the bench needs to be as deep as possible and the team also needs a robust walk-on program. btw there is no bigger preacher of that concept than John Beilein.

Does anybody have reliable sources as to what the actual time table is for RT?

too bad for Ricky. hope it's a speedy recovery.

but it doesn't matter according to HCDM. We don't need to use the last scholly and we have plenty of depth everywhere so I'm not the least bit concerned.
