Yeah I think his DEI background is a positive.
I would disagree. It should be about Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Character - should have nothing to quota systems. Is leading to a large of unqualified people getting placed into positions they cannot handle.

So you're implying that the candidate won't work because his specialty is DEI. Nice to see you've given him a fair shot.

No, incorrect. I was disagreeing that it was a positive. Did not say it was a negative. I would want to know about this person's Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Character. Thus, when a person leads with something other that, my antenna go up to be cautious - does not automatically eliminate - but will have to dig deeper. Sort of like looking at a loan - a lower credit score, a high debt-to-income ratio/debt-service-coverage ratio or a high loan-to-value - gets your attention right away. Thus, you have to look into the situation more in-depth - in many instances, there is an acceptable reason why, and the caution is alleviated.

The first candidate and current Interim President made a very good case. Let's see what the others bring to the table.

Again, you’ve implied that it’s a negative by your adamant stance that it’s not a positive. Even your credit card example implies it’s a scam. Not sure why, but when I read your comments, my dog started barking.

Let’s just hope they choose the best qualified candidate. I think this time we have a qualified candidate in the field, so it shouldn’t be that difficult. I hope we find a true leader. This is a very critical period of transition for higher ed, so we really need someone with vision and the ability to execute on their plans.

I am concerned about Dr. Easton-Brooks’ lack of university-wide leadership experience. I would prefer a candidate like President Tarhule who has had success in the role itself and also experience at higher levels.

Frankly, I am not impressed when a candidate puts forth a resume (CV) that has not been proofread. That is something they talk you about in college.

Candidate number 3 is revealed!

Fromer ISU associate dean of fine arts, Elizabeth Reitz Mullenix. She is currently provost and executive vice president at Miami of Ohio.
Pretty impressive experience, and Miami is considered a top “public Ivy” institution. I like that she has prior ISU time in one of our premier programs…..

Not to mention the work she's done in DEI . . .

If anyone wonders why we haven’t yet seen any old white guys as candidates, all one needs to do is read the posts on this thread.

Tarhule probably stayed under wraps so as not to turn off other candidates.

I think all three so far have interviewed well. There are both advantages and disadvantages to being the incumbent.

Sorry to be so slow but can you spell this one out for me? I've read the posts on this thread and there appears to be a variety of opinions. I've been told that diversity is a good thing. I'm not clear on why we haven't seen any old white guy candidates based on what has been written.

Interesting background on Mullenix

As provost, Mullenix oversees — among others — Miami University’s College of Engineering and Computing, which she said has developed new programs aimed at future engineering needs. Mullenix said the university developed new degree tracks in robotics engineering and climate engineering and has its eye on a program dedicated to artificial intelligence.

Obviously with us starting a School of Engineering, that could give her a leg up.

Absolutely agree. Tarhule also worked on selling the College of Engineering so similar experience. I have to say the final candidate does not appear to have near the experience working at public universities like ISU. However, he is an expert on the influence of American cinema on fascism in Italy. 🇮🇹 I didn’t even know Mussolini was a movie buff!

Honest question: What don’t they have that would leave you “blown away”?
Experience and demonstrated achievement in real leadership positions, a background in the sciences, and a proven fundraiser. I just hope there is accountability with this search committee.
