We're missing context on this. He would NOT be offered a job without interviewing for it so IF he was offered, that means he or his agent reached out or responded to an inquiry and he had interviews, met with decision makers and they presented a formal offer. It could be that they loosely used the word "offered" when what really happened is someone reached out from FAU and Louisville to express interest see if he wanted to apply for the job and he said no to that. Big difference there.

They quoted years and amounts so I think the there were discussions with at least agent who probably was talking with the coach. I think there plenty happening behind the scenes

That would be wild if he turned down UL, FAU, and SLU!

I can’t see Schertz staying at InSU. The salary he would command to stay would, at minimum, max out their budget, probably go beyond, if they give him Jacobson money or above. Those same boosters would then need to pony up huge NIL raises to keep his star players and attract other ones.

Good for them if they can keep him; however, he would be going to a school where he has a chance to make the NCAA tournament without winning a conference tournament, With the Sycamores schedule options, if they don’t win in StL, there is a good chance they don’t make the tournament again.

Looks like they are fighting to keep the coach.

Pretty altruistic of the current president to place blame on those in-charge FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO, and now desperately asking for NIL contributions at the eleventh hour. One would tend to think any coach, as a condition of staying, would want increased funding for staff in addition to more NIL (and the decision makers would have seen this coming if/when any program had success).

Again, the gap widens.

Well I think the NIL makes it so called legal to pay players that the Blue Bloods have always done by surrogates under the table. Whether they provided vehicles, cash, or jobs for family. Coaches that have cheated or turned a blind eye to shady boosters seem to always find a job if they win. ie Bruce Pearl

That's pretty mind blowing to me. You don't get to stage of discussions of years and amounts without first expressing interest. So if years and amounts were discussed, at minimum, the coach (through his agent) acknowledged interest in the job and the agent said something to the effect of "ok, we're interested, what type of compensation are you talking about?" and then the schools responded with numbers. I still can't imagine a university offering without first interviewing the coach personally and they wouldn't throw out years and amounts without the agent saying they were interested.

Schertz spent 13 years at a Division II school and if more money and recognition was his priority, he would have left there a long time ago. Everyone is wired differently and while money certainly is an important factor in life, it's not the driving decision making force for many people. Before Gonzaga had the money to pay Mark Few more money and even still, he's making $1.8 million per year which is much less than he could get at a different university. But he loves Spokane and has absolutely zero job insecurity and a fanbase that loves him.

Perhaps these "offers" are simply leverage that the agent is attempting to create to get Schertz a bigger/longer contract at Indiana State. Regarding the Indiana State collective and their president's quote, I think the quote itself was a little strange but I can imagine if Al Bowman were still President that he would be actively involved with fundraising and bringing in money to make the athletic programs more competitive. Successful athletic programs are a source of attraction and attention that directly correlate to student applications and enrollment. It's money well invested.

Side note: I watched Indiana State's last home NIT game the other night and was blown away by the sellout crowd. I remember going to that arena and also seeing attendance numbers that were much worse than what Illinois State has been in recent years. It's almost incomprehensible to me how they could turn the Terre Haute community and Indiana State fanbase around like that to generate sellouts today. Lately, I've lost hope that Illinois State could ever turn things around because the community and fanbase feel apathetic but watching Indiana State gives me some hope.

The President of IndySt didn't ask for the contribution, Sycamore Pride did. Although I'm sure the prez is hustling as well.

I realize bribing has gone along in this game for decades (and decades). But this NIL giddyup makes me feel like I am directly responsible for bribing players and coaches to stay. It feels gross and takes away the spirit of the game in which I grew up.

Outside of season tix, I'm not sure I feel good about contributing one additional dollar to anything regarding NIL. Yes that presents a paradoxical picture. I want a winner. But I'm not willing to contribute. Hmmmmn. Hypocrite?

I want a kid to stay because he wants to stay and even loves Illinois State, and not because I dumped 10K into an account that can be directed to him/her. But that's not the competitive world in which we now live. I guess that puts me on the outside and not an official "supporter."

As I look at my goody goody post above, I ponder...and realize...that I have rooted for teams, coaches, and players who have been bought and paid for by friends of the program...going back to the early 80's when I became a sports fanatic. Yep. I'm a part of the hypocrite crowd.

Dinger beat me to it. On one hand, this could be cynically viewed as a now legal/official way to pay the student athletes up front and not in the under-the-table style that has gone on for decades (movies like The Program and Blue Chips were ahead of their time on this.) It used to be that when there was hype about the team and success on the court, donors would pony up on season tix and dip into their checkbooks to extend coaches. Now, all we gotta do is donate! There will probably be an option specifically for NIL during next year's Birds Give Back campaign. So let's go everyone, time to drop the kids off at the NIL Pool!

Athletics today is a mere reflection of societal trends. Which is based in the fundamental of ME ME ME.

Makes me want to take a good hard look in 'da mirror.

Early January they were getting above 4,000 to home games. When we win people will pack the arena again and then when Schertz leaves Indiana State will not be getting the crowds they are getting now. Vicious cycle but its a cycle.

I’m guessing this goes on in junior high and high school. Rochester 8th grade basketball team has twins Khordell and Khornell Gregory. Khordell is one of the best (if not the best) 8th grade guard in the state. As 7th graders they lost in the state championship game. As 8th graders they lost in semifinals to the same school (and eventual champion) they lost to in the 7th grade championship game. They want to stay at Rochester. Parents want them to go to Sacred Heart Griffin. Can’t imagine any SHG Booster/Alumni would be trying to persuade the parents decision. Personally (and selfishly) I hope the kids stay at Rochester and continue the journey they have been on with their classmates and teammates. But we shall see if the SHG influencers/parents or twins win out. As for the future, I would love to see them playing at Illinois State. Khornell possibly (due to his being a bit shorter), but Khordell definitely has High major size and skills, and basketball IQ.

Short term success is very achievable, it's the long term success that is become more and more difficult. I've seen a lot of angst about four Mountain West teams making the tourney, the powers that be do not want upstarts to succeed. They love their name brand schools for a lot of reasons.

We were neighbors with the Cox twins. They used to beat the daylights out of one of my sons...in a good way. Anyway, Rochester got them. Why not these peeps?

Might not be popular opinion, but he would be foolish to stay. Just an injury or two, players leaving, or weaker results next year would make him less viable for some schools. The amount of money being offered, if true, is generational money for his family. Needs to take it and hope that INSU wishes him well.

I say Yes. Khordell will start Varsity from day one wherever he ends up.
