CIT just seems awful. It is back after a 1 year hiatus. I wonder how the financial aspect compares to the CBI. I understand this gives some of the low majors who were screwed by the NIT a chance, but I think the CBI could try to just run a 24 or 32 team tournament and it would be better. There is supposed to be 16 teams in the CIT and they currently have 9 (including 11-22 Alabama A&M) with probably a few TBA.

This might be outdated with the revival of the tournament but a very interesting note from Wiki. I knew the P6 weren't eligible but didn't know A-10, AAC, MWC, or ... CUSA. I wouldn't be surprised if CUSA is an eligible league now.
The tournament is oriented toward teams that did not get selected for the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament or National Invitation Tournament (NIT) that reside outside of the "major conferences" (defined by CollegeInsider.com as the Power Five conferences, Atlantic 10 Conference, American Athletic Conference, Big East Conference, Conference USA and Mountain West Conference).
And look who needs an opponent....Norfolk State

With a resume like that, if they were in a P6 conference they would be dancing with the grown-ups. Listen and you can almost hear the committee members spin on the inclusion of the Cougars.

I don’t know. I think it’s much harder for a quality mid-major to get a P5 to schedule them than it is for a low-mid. Look at Texas Southern…every year they play a killer non-con.
ISU is now a low-mid. Should be easy for us to get P5’s to schedule us.
If we’re willing to go on the road for buy games there should be willing opponents.

Muller briefly embraced an annual buy game, but then seemed to do it less towards the end. Buy games ran contrary to Jank’s scheduling philosophy. Pedon took us to Kentucky, but that probably had more to do with Reeves.

We can play those games, but they’re not exactly easy to win. But our athletic department could probably use the payouts, too.

I’d rather lose at UCLA than to High Point.

Locals I'd like to do, at least alternating, with the occasional "WOW" two-for-one, or even a clutch H-H like the SLU deal:

TIER 1: Marquette /Butler/Purdue/Iowa State/Wisky...

after that, I have a hard time with 2-for-1's - maybe need to spread out more geographically

TIER 3: as they sit now: DePaul/Loyola/SLU - snag 'em while they are blow normal Tier 2 status

..and whatever happened to those Conference A v. Conference B. - type "challenges" (i.e. Valley-WCC alternating home/return games)

That Cincinnati game and the driving down to Carbondale in a blizzard were probably my two least favorite road trip games.

Use a buy game (or 2) to fund NILs

We have has H&H with Central Florida and BYU who are both in Big 12. Call them up. I would also talk to Mountain West teams. The nonconference needs to keep getting better especially as the talent on the team improves.

BYU and UCF have now blocked our numbers. They moved on up ... to that deluxe apartment in the sky.

Having said that, I would like to see us go after some AAC, A10, MWC and WCC schools. At least some potential games amongst our (theoretical) conference peers.

Ain't nobody reading the football board? They're talking about getting in the MAC!! Let's schedule some h & h's with some MAC teams - Toledo, Akron, our old conference mates C. Mich and Ball State. Plus all those others.

I would include the American conference

Where would you classify a Louisville, Memphis, or even Missouri? All former Valley members, one up two down. All 3 are drivable for the fans and have a name. Should be a decent payday and attractive to kids, heck maybe Louisville is in such a bad place they might do a 2 for 1.

Those 3 wins, 2 being against Stetson, were encompassed in their 9 D-1 wins. If only that’s all it took to get a post-season bid.

I’m wondering how CSU is paying for this trip. For a program that doesn’t have much in resources, maybe they used some of their buy game revenue. They have the Mike Davis-Texas Southern approach. Play 10-12 buy games, essentially most of your games on the road collecting checks.

As far as bids, is the new term “dents and dings” when they run out of stats that can’t be manipulated? From RPI to Net to Quad 1 wins…we now move to “dents and dings” to keep a deserving non-P5 in to get a mediocre P5 team in. What are those “dents and dings”? They won’t explain.

Last year ...

High Point and Quinnipiac would be in the NIT (as regular season champions) instead of playing to play the CBI

Arkansas-Little Rock, California-Irvine, Central Connecticut State, Eastern Washington, Sam Houston State and Toledo would be in the NIT (as regular season champions) instead of sitting at home

Yet Indiana (98), Memphis (75), Mississippi (90), Oklahoma (46), Pittsburgh (40), St. John's (32), Syracuse (84) and Washington (69) are too good to play "second-tier" and yet the NCAA still allowed for lower teams from most of their associated conferences to take their (exempt) place ... plus some of those, given their NET, should be comical (but in today's world, probably not as much).
