I've noticed a lot of teams adding "Special Assistants to the HC" type positions to their staff over the last few months. Barry Hinson at OK State and Chris Lowery at Mo State are the names at the top of my head. I don't know if budget is available but there's an opportunity for Pedon to add to his staff. You have Pedon-a first time HC, Offutt- experienced assistant, Dakich-brand new to on-court coaching, and Judson the crafty vet. The other three staff members only have manager experience, which I'm sure is very valuable but can we count on them to help the talent on the floor if Offutt and Dak are on the road? I wonder if there's someone from Pedon's past that could help out in a "special assistant" role.

If Craig Robinson doesn't take the new revenue and fan interest job in athletics...I'll take him as a special assistant.

Been thinking about your question . . . My guess is most managers played in HS, so there is some playing experience. Also, these kids are there for everything the team does, and if I’m a coach I’m expecting them to be paying close attention to the lessons, practices, and games. They’re probably picking up the slack in practices when players are hurt or unable to practice. I’ve often seen managers talking to assistants during timeouts and even clarifying with officials where a ball will be inbounded after a timeout.

And there’s got to be a reason why manager games have become such a big deal (even having their own tourneys before the conference tourneys). Mastroianni was an assistant with his dad (a long-time HS coach) last year. So I think these kids can offer quite a bit of help during practices.

Coach Pedon & the 3 assistants are great teachers of the game & will do an excellent job in practice. The support staff will be there to support them in practice in any way needed but Coach Pedon & the assistants will be doing most of, if not all, of the coaching in practice. With only 15 players on a roster there’s no need to more than 4 coaches providing instructions at once. The support staff will be good coaches in there career but with no previous coaching experience , it’s unlikely they’ll be heavily involved in on the court coaching

In practice, coaches like to break down drills into groups. So if you break it down into 3 groups (bigs, wings, guards) the 3 assistants will take those drills and the HC will watch everything. If two assistants are on the road recruiting you will now have someone be able to step in and run those drills. The 3 other guys should have no problem stepping in and doing that. It ain't rocket surgery. It's a really good rule. Keeps continuity in practice.

Timmy, you are a wise and respected fan.

I would, however, for conversation's sake sake retort with the "Ain't brain science argument."
A first-time HC with a nice pedigree (hmm, seems like someone that spent alot of time at Vanderbilt) and his staff's resume reads like interns looking to teach a 300-level course at Schroeder.
