Just goes to show that either no one on this board is connected or if they are they ain't talking.
Quinn,

That's a very good point. For some reason many people on this board thought Roger Powell Jr. was a sure thing. Nowhere was I ever told or had any inkling that it was close with Powell. Pedon's name came up around 2 weeks ago, but only on a few underlying circuits. This is a wonderful hire and I can assure you that after some of the medical complications and personal struggles I have gone through the last year , I have a new hope for my Redbirds!!

Someone asked him on Twitter about the ESPN placeholder for an 11 am press conference Monday. He replied that it was a mistake, it was nothing. Then 90 mins later we have a coach with an 11 am press conference Monday.
I can appreciate Kyle keeping it close to the vest, but obviously it leaked to Columbus and Norlander before benson. Wonder what the disconnect is there?

When I saw the tweet in the news conference I knew it was legitimate, how benson can dismiss that so quickly is odd… an awfully big mistake for an event to show up on the espn app….

Damn! Wikipedia is already updated. Now we wonder what players will be back. Post game player interview was Lewis. He sounded open about being at ISU next year.

Let me push further down the road (farther?) -- will be interesting to see how he sets up his assistants. Does he try to get someone with some direct ties to Chicago/Illinois, or just go with the "best men"? Former player, Big 10 ties, MAC ties??? Will be fun to see it unfold. Wonder if he's already got some guys.

In the Goredbirds article:

Eric (ISU football alum) and Michelle (Rucker) Liddell (ISU volleyball alum)
"Coach Pedon has been a phenomenal leader and has positively impacted a number of players over his many years of coaching. From the time he began tirelessly recruiting our son, almost four years ago, we knew that he had the qualities of a coach that would be a great role model for our son – genuine, hard-working, respectable, passionate, dedicated and fully committed. Not only is he a fantastic coach, but he is also motivating, encouraging and focused on instilling good habits outside of the sport that will be carried on throughout life. Coach Pedon has fully instilled the trust of our entire family and we are forever indebted to him for treating our son EJ like one of his own. Coach Pedon is a true gem and Illinois State, our alma mater, will be the perfect place for him to shine! Congratulations!"

Does the timing of the announcement (on the day of our last game of the season) feel strange to anyone else?
I think it says to the fanbase: we have our guy! The way the season went, and letting Coach Muller go prior to the end of the season, set this up. I went from being disappointed with the L today, to excited for next season all in an hour!

It does feel incredibly strange to me. Perhaps it leaked somehow which then forced the official announcement to be made and if this is the case, while still disappointing, I can understand why. Otherwise, the timing is not good and would have been much better for many reasons to be on Monday (after MVC tournament, less to compete with on news cycle where this will get buried slightly, etc)

It does feel a little interesting to me that the first communication (if this report is accurate) with Ryan was on Monday and the entire interviewing and vetting out process happened this quickly. He will have my support and I do know a few people that I'm close with that think extremely highly of him. Admittedly, I am simultaneously feeling a sense of disappointment for other reasons.

My sense is that Ryan was assertive, fully prepared to be aggressive with this opportunity and it was him that "closed the deal" on Kyle and what if any other committee was involved with the search process. I trust he was impressive and professional and based on what I have heard from the few close to me that know him well, he sounds like a really good coach that will bring us success.

I wonder if he was the first choice? Did RPJ say, no thanks? Anyway, moving on. Go Birds!
