Anytime you hire an AD, and a job opens up like the head coach of the top program at the university, you should probably assume the AD will use his connections to make the hire. It’s his baby at this point and his job performance will be judged on the hire. Larry Lyons extension he provided muller is why his legacy is tarnished. If Pedon is a horrible head coach, will will look back and blame Kyle for his selection. If he leads ISU to March madness, Kyle will look pretty good and be on the move to a bigger university.

Bottom line is the bar is pretty low for Ryan! His team offense and defense can’t be any worse than what was on the floor this weekend.

You are right that Ryan may not move the needle enough for him not have been the driving force in Kyle getting hired.

But I bet ISU decision makers would have felt pretty good knowing that Ryan was the floor hire. That is a very high floor considering his resume as just as good as most of other names out there.

Moreover, I think Kyle’s strengths are being a good guy and being super organized. The weakness on his resume was basketball is king here and Utah frankly stunk at basketball during his tenure there.

I’m guessing this was pretty evident to ISU. So I wouldn’t be surprised if they asked him about it. And I wouldn’t be surprised if his answer was, “I got an in with Pedon.”

Sorry, but I think you're giving way too much credit to Larry Dietz to think he might have asked specifically about a new basketball coach. I could believe it from our current prez, but not Dietz.

Is it me or do the players seem pretty disinterested in this? I assume this was filmed at the hotel or something but it just seems weird also.

Let’s just see what roster and assistant coach turnover we have and go from there.
I thought that was a bit strange too. It was coming off a loss, so I can understand it to an extent but wish we could see what the response/interaction was like following his message to the team. Pedon did say he is going to put all he can into the ISU job right now (while obviously coaching at OSU), so hopefully he can make it out to campus in the next 1-2 weeks (and I am confident he will since the BIG 10 tournament is about a 2.5 hour drive). It will be critical to build early relationships with players which will be best done in person.

*After typing that I realize he will obviously be here for Monday's press conference

Somewhat interesting/ironic: Strong, Kotov, Fleming, Sissoko, Washington, and Andrews all played their first game as a Redbird against Pedon's Buckeyes. I highly doubt that means anything to them and I don't think they have talked really at all with him until now but was worth noting.

A couple things get me very excited. 1) He is a big time recruiter with Midwest ties. 2) Ohio state has been top 25 in offensive efficiency nationally for 4 of the past 5 seasons. Meanwhile, we haven’t been top 3 in our conference since the 2017 season. 3) Brennan seems to know what the hell he’s doing and a quick hire like this leads me to believe it’s a home run situation. Per some research and what another posted, he was making $500K per year as an assistant at Ohio state. Perhaps we’re throwing the guy some big money?

Let’s go birds! Cannot wait to see what coaching staff he puts together and what happens with the roster within the next couple months. Only thing I’m a little worried about is him being the head coach here while still finishing out the season at OSU as we’d like for him to get to work immediately, but maybe that won’t be too big of a deal.

Well, if he gives the "truth" to that room, 80% of them will not be asked back. Maybe worried more than disinterested?

As much as we like our guys they only got us to another Thursday night. We all hope some will be back, but Ryan will likely have to have some hard conversations.

Maybe but trying to read too much into an awkward situation for young kids. They just lost their coach, season just ended and thrown into an awkward team meeting they were not expecting. Ive coached kids for 41 years I get their expressions.

Yep. The talent level, fundamentals, decision making, consistency, etc... are nowhere near the level of the 4 teams playing today. I'm guessing he has a lengthy list of recruits he is ready to contact.

Interesting interview from 3 years ago. I would say we’ve got a hell of a recruiter on our hands. He’s got a ton of experience recruiting at both the mid-major and high major levels.

He wouldn’t have taken this job if he didn’t think he could have great success recruiting here.

Yesterday was very interesting. I was walking thru the lobby in STL PRIOR to our game with UNI. Our new President was walking by and I stopped her and introduced myself. She is very nice and talkative. After a few minutes of chit chat, I told her, I am looking forward to the Press Conference on Monday to name the new coach. By that time a couple of others had gathered and she said to us. "Who do you think it will be?" There were answers of Powell and the guy from DII in Missouri. She just smiled and stated, "You are going to be very excited with the new hire!" She was honestly thrilled with it.

It was also very interesting to watch the announcement of the new coach permeate thru the Redbird section during the Loyola game. (BU did not show up). People started talking and looking at their phones. It was a mixed reaction because no one knew who it was or expected that name. Once people did their research it turned very positive.

Like others, I am excited to see what he can do with our team. The fan base is HUNGRY!

I am excited. His lengthy experience recruiting at the mid-major and major level should be huge for us. I would expect a lot of turnover in the ranks and would be worried if there wasn’t. He will have to navigate the portal from a new position, but he must be a good evaluator of talent. We’ve had good luck with former Big Ten assistants as head coaches

I keep waiting for Pedon to say just kidding or something… this is like when the really hot girl dates a huge dork because she doesn’t know how hot she is, and the dork and everyone else are waiting for her to realize it and walk….

Great hire for ISU. Pedon settled big time. A bottom tier team in a falling conference. Unless he just wants to win and knows this conference is bad enough to become a perennial top 2 team in a coupe of years… win and bounce to a better program? This program is bad, this conference is bad.

I'm curious if there's anybody on OSU who might be looking for a new start at the MVC level, and if he's got a few recruits out there that he established a good relationship with but just didn't make the cut at OSU. Or guys who ended up elsewhere who might like the chance to play for him now.

Sorry for this Quinn.

You are a ****ing idiot. MVC is one of the elite mid major leagues and ISU is arguably the top job in that league. The conference is far from failing and only getting stronger. This is just the dumbest thing I’ve read.

I really like the Pedon hire. I am going to have to watch the Ohio State offense and see if that system is a good system or if the high skilled players make the system work. Honestly haven't watched a single Ohio State game this season.

This hire is more in line with the formula that has worked more times than not for ISU in the past: an experienced, top assistant from a top 25 program in a P5 conference. Time will tell, as it would with anyone hired, but I like the thinking behind the choice and the first impression.
