This the the part that pisses me off the most. I have empathy for the ref that heard it and for the NSU coach after it was relayed to him. I will not question what the NSU coach said as I've seen the video and article with the quotes that @isutaz shared.

The fact that the refs didn't bring coach Pedon and the NSU coach together at the same time to tell them is what caused this bad, unacceptable conduct of a fan to become an embarrassment of our university. I am 100% certain that coach Pedon would have actively gotten involved to calm the crowd and immediately apologized for what happene.d
Doug… your posts make a lot of sense and I totally agree that the officials could have handled this way better and could have saved this incident from becoming as crazy as it is. I do question your statement that you have “empathy for the ref that heard it”. Have I missed something? I have yet to read or hear anything official that a game official heard definitively what was said. Until I see the final release from ISU’s investigation and their official announcement, how do we know what truly we said? Hard for me to have empathy if I don’t know facts…but that’s just me.

Thanks and completely understand your perspective. At this point, I'm choosing to take the NSU coach's word for it regarding what the official told him because if he lied about this, the official could easily out him as a liar for saying something he didn't say. Because of this, it feels credible to me. This is different than people making claims from anonymous sources. If it's proven that he made it up, I wouldn't hesitate to retract my position.

Agree, lots of mere conjecture at this point….

As I read all these comments and especially the response by Norfolk st and specifically their coach. They don't like the response from Coach Pedon and ISU. OK, do we really think any response would have been OK. What could we have done except to respond right after the game. The incident still happened, wouldn't have changed anything. Not one comment from NSU was about the person who uttered the words who other than being a fan of ISU, has no affiliation with the school that we know of. Also no recognition by NSU about the actions of #6 a few other players and coaches who were talking back to fans, and as many here have stated and I witnessed waving bye to fans at the end of the game. Also no comments by NSU about the referees who played a huge part in what went down. Stop making ISU out to be the villian in this situation.
Look no further than the BYU/Duke women’s volleyball incident (debacle) or even the Duke mens lacrosse incident.
Once someone accuses someone of dropping a racial slur, there is nothing you can do to make it right in the eyes of the public.
These refs are strangely silent, but in todays world who can blame them.

Agreed 100% that Pedon, especially as he really has embraced the "fan's/community's coach" be it schtick or legit, seems like a dude that would have gotten on the PA and say to, "cool it."

Who remembers that game back in, I think '95 when someone threw something on the court, KS stopped everything, grabbed the mic, and in as stern a KS "get-off-my-lawn" stare and scowl bemoaned to the fans, "They might do that other places, but WE don't do THAT as Illinois State." [mic drop]

Absolutely, I was at that game when coach Stallings grabbed the mic and said that and I have no doubt in my mind that coach Pedon would have done something similar if the ref would have called him and the NSU coach together to tell them both what happened. The refs screwed up. Maybe this isn't something they had formal leadership training on but to me, it's common sense.

Luke Dakich’s father, former IU basketball player and ESPN commentator, Dan Dakich, has a podcast. It’s called “Don’t @ Me”. In today’s podcast, he discusses the incident at Horton, at about the 33-34 minute mark. It’s a few minutes long, if you are interested.

Andrew, not Luke. Dan cites some things in here about people who say they didn’t hear anything…kinda interesting

I don’t recognize the name, but then he also says the ISU player said it didn’t happen. Jordan Davis would’ve been closest. He looked so confused in that moment too. I wonder what he heard if anything.

This individual has revived his campaign to harass our players again if anyone is up for another round of reporting. He is being even more targeted than last time. I saw that X restricted one of his tweets. I'm still hoping for more action to be taken.

Believe it or not, I reported multiple tweets and got an email reply from X saying it didn't break any rules

That's absolutely wild to me. I haven't gotten any such communication. He's tweeted practically the same thing 5-6 times. One has been flagged "visibility limited: this post may violate X's rules against Hateful Conduct". It doesn't allow you to interact with that particular tweet and it was posted this morning. Very strange because the posts are definitely violating something.

Hypothetically, let's say this plays out.
1. The 3 fans state nothing inappropriate was said.
2. The referee says he didn't hear anything.
3. The surrounding fans say they didn't hear anything.
4. The Redbird players say they didn't hear anything. Jordan was closest.
Now what?

Robert “Brandon Johnson” Jones doesn’t get the P5 job he is trying to get.

NSU says all are liars and racists. We move on with life. We learn from this and adapt. The schools don’t play each other and the story fades while a very few internet trolls continue dwelling on this.

Unfortunately, three sides to several things that happened...

From Norfolk Coach:
"He said game officials told them the reason for the ejections at the time. He said one game official heard the slur and one other Norfolk State player heard it. He said after the incident, the effect of an African American official changed."

“His whole demeanor changed,” said Jones. "It put a damper on him, too. On the way out, he told me he’s going to let the whole conference know exactly what happened.”
How come I feel like Jones’ is just making sh@t up?

Coach Jones has his weekly interview tonight at 7 pm CST. If it is anything like his recent interviews, expect new revelations. I don't know if I will watch, but I am curious.

‘X’ is Elon’s mouthpiece. If it generates traffic, Elon wants to protect it.
