I'm hearing rumors that ND wants Porter and Porter wants to go to ND. I'll be curious to see if that plays out, because that could also move some puzzle pieces around in the coaching vacancy. If this plays out, I could see Oklahoma going after someone like DeVries.

I like this post, but again…once you develop these kids, they’re likely off to greener pastures.
How do you recruit decent players, improve them, and keep them for all 4 years?
That seems like a tall task these days.
I think that’s what Pedon have in his pocket going forward as recruiting. Look at it this way. Lewis, Burford, Liam, Luke and Mal are all likely to return. All of these kids will stay the remainder of their time at ILSU I believe. If so this team will be better over the next few years with additions. Then you will have a winning and exciting team to sell to new recruits. The glass is always half full gents.

Pops I am sure has heard and knows more then what us fans know but I would recommend reading this article. As Lewis says "I am ready to rock with coach Pedon through whatever. I'd run through a wall for him. I wish we could have given him a win, he definitely changed the culture at Illinois State."

That is how you do it but getting the buy-in and the leaders on the team to have that buy-in for the rest of the team and it follows from guy 1 to the last guy on the bench.

This is one of the better posts and insights on this board point blank period. I can’t tell if this was the Ohio State offensive sets or not either. One thing is for sure though. This years team didn’t have the same caliber offensive skill set for it. I don’t claim to be an X’s and O’s guy but I do know spacing. I do know when a player is lost trying to run the sets. Too much standing around, too many times we had 2 kids occupying basically the same area on the floor. I will say it again Basketball IQ along with the missing pieces handcuffed the offense this year. There is no way I believe Pedon settled for so much one on o e play. That’s a product of not being able of running the sets. Someone had to step up after all there is a shot clock. DB and Knight benefited greatly from a few players too many times being where they were not supposed to be instead of the right spot for the set.
You nailed it on the spacing. There were a lot of times there were two or three guys trying to get to the same spot. This could be guys playing out of position or low bbiq. I think it is the position part though. Next season with the core back and players coming in to play the positions were lacking will help. I would love to see Mal and Luke focused on shooting the rock than trying to run the offense. Asking our two best shooters to initiate the offense hurt.

I thought Burford started to grasp the sets better towards the end of the season. I think this is what lead to his increased output.

The other missing piece for the Pedon offense is a post player that can pass out of and within the post. Chase looks like he can be that guy. I thought Schmitt could be that guy as well. I was wrong but he never got a shot really. Not sure what happened there.

Lewis also seemed to improve within the offense as the season went on. I think Lewis was being asked to be the big that Pedon's offense requires. I don't believe he is that player. I believe he will have a monster yet next season playing in the correct role.

I put absolutely no faith when folks are asked this question during the season and they have a job currently. You'll never say "Yep, I'm out of here if they offer me the job, but if they don't I sure hope Oklahoma keeps me around"

That said it is just a rumor. I'm not saying it will happen, just that I've heard/read from several folks that there is mutual interest between the two.

I honestly believe DB will get a really hard look at the pg at the beginning of next season. Unless there’s a pg to bring in by way of the Portal/JUCCO he’s the man. To me he’s grown enough throughout this season. Then again how much do I know? At least the returnees should be able to play with each other more effectively and better next year. I know the staff hit the road running a day or two ago.

This would seem likely to me. It seems the the last ten games or so DB finally clicked with the offense. This was a new system for everyone and sometimes it takes people longer to get comfortable in it.

DB is a fine offensive player but true playmaking is not his calling. Let the youngster from DePere ease into that role with a solid Portal PG to run the show for next year.

I was not at all pleased with our Team D this year. Just look at the opponents shooting percentages- at times I felt u could drive a small pickup down the lane against certain Muller teams and this year we were consistently allowing penetration.

I’ve heard we stuck with man D principles as that’s the Culture of future. My culture prefers Winning so it’s a head scratcher on why we don’t mix in some zone but????

Another consistent annoyance we’re the turnovers. What, 15 a game?

I love ❤️ Pedon and his staff. I fully expect an influx of Talent/Skill, better D and ball care. With that, better days ahead.

Just to brighten everyone's spirits...since we lacked so much depth (especially in conference play), all of the returning guys have the equivalent of 1.5 seasons of experience. This should escalate the improvement process (if it indeed is going to happen with this crew of players). I just wish I would have seen more improvement from the beginning to the end of the season. We were still making many of the same mistakes on offense and defense. I really couldn't pick out one specific area that we saw improvement in. We would have slow starts, finish the half on a run to get back into the game, start slow again in the 2nd half, and then fight hard to claw our way back to respectability. This was often true for wins and losses. The only exception being the Belmont game when we shot 70% from 3-point land.

It seems to me—and I might be selectively remembering—that Darius seemed to ‘slow’ his game down some after he started wearing the mask. Seemed a little less reckless. Might need to do a little analysis . . .

LeRoy Watkins got better at free throw shooting in the NIT when he had to wear A wrist wrap.

I've heard the same exact thing except it just doesn't add up. Why would ND want him? Because they are hanging on the fact Porter got lucky and led another catholic school to brief success? He can't even produce at Oklahoma and they have all the resources at their disposal... rinse and repeat I suppose

Culture and personality. Porter doesn't fit at OU. Wrong personality, wrong style. He'd fit better at ND. Seems to me he'd do better at ND than he ever will at OU.

Pretty much what @Bird Friend said. Its largely about cultural fit. He also has a lot of regional connections made from Loyola that I'm sure ND would like to capitalize on and that he doesn't get to use as much at OK right now. I personally think he'll do better at ND, but it won't be instant success.

Don't wanna dig for the original post re: Moser to ND, so I'll reply to Bird Friend's post - here's some stuff from Hoops Dirt re: ND's search. Our friend De Vries getting some love:

Two names gaining steam at Notre Dame are Colgate’s Matt Langel and Drake’s Darian DeVries. Langel has Colgate in the tourney for the 3rd straight year, and is the program’s all-time leader in wins. His career record is 202-173 (.539). DeVries has gone 122-47 (.722) in his 5 seasons at Drake, and also has his squad headed to the tourney this year after winning the MVC. Also, I’m not buying any Chris Holtmann to Notre Dame reports right now.
