If Smith wants to still play close to home...St.Louis or Missouri.

Missouri for sure. I'll throw out another one, not quite as close to home - Tennessee.. I think Smith's style and body type would fit with Rick Barnes scheme pretty well.

Next Season? I think I need some continuity. I would be ecstatic if no one leaves.

Trying to get to know the players, this season, was tough. We never knew who would be dressing/playing. If "quality time" was defined as healthy competitive and soul searching minutes when the whole team played with each other (instead of shooting freethrows, etc). The practices and game time..."quality time" I would think a normal healthy team would be together about 90% quality time. Could this season "quality time" even rack up to even 50%?

And with the lack of good "quality time", with only 3(?) healthy games when all dressed ready to play...we still were seeded #3 and played the championship game.

ISU REDBIRD BASKETBALL TEAM....you impress the coach, you are offered a scholly, you attend ISU....OR you walk on the team....once the squad is finalized....then my REDBIRD men will always be THE TEAM we live with until the roster changes.

It is understandable to look at the team as a herd of animals that were bought to pull a rig...so we look at each muscle of our livestock and treat each of the herd as an animal, a work horse.

When I was very young...I would run out into the pasture and jump on the back of the cows and our one bull and ride the bovines around the pasture. One day I came home from school and Basil, the bull, was no longer in the pasture. You got it. Dad had the bull slaughtered. Oh. The humanity.

I really do not like to look at my teams as herds of work animals.

THEN...I also wish for next season that maybe some of the posters on redbirdfan will remember that each of our players have intelligence and feelings. THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU BERATE A PLAYER WHEN SAID PLAYER COULD READ WHAT YOU WROTE SO NASTILY TOWARDS HIM OR HIS TEAMMATES.

I have seen nothing, and I mean nothing, that makes me think this team will sniff the top 50 next year, let alone the top 25.
In typical Redbird fan fashion, we're banking on a bunch of unknowns to carry us to the NCAA. Not from Missouri, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Watch the Barry Hinson post game presser after our game down there in St Louis. He expects us to be number 1 next year. Turns out coaches see something in our guys.
I don’t think there is much debate now about ISU’s preseason standing in the MVC next year as most everyone would likely agree top 3 as the most conservative guess and many guessing a #1 preseason ranking. I see it as ISU and Loyola with slight advantage ISU but I do see some glaring needs that Muller needs to address. However the national ranking is the big deal and I can’t CURRENTLY see this returning ISU team as an at large team let alone a ranked team as some others suggest. We have 3 players that could be part of a starting rotation good enough to be ranked at that level but we are missing two other starters of that quality plus bench depth.

I am not sure David, or even Fayne, have a frame to even gain 20 more pounds. David is pretty ripped in his arms/chest but guys with that frame can’t just “get bigger”. He had skinny ass legs and that’ll never change with his body type. I’m sure he can put in more muscle, but I don’t think 20 lbs is feasible. Guys like Shaq Morris and Isaac Haas (Purdue) are just built that way. They’ve always had the body type to be able to put on more and more bulk and muscle. Not David, or Fayne IMO.

And Krutwig will never be able to jump over a phonebook or pass up a triple cheezboiger. Just need to play him smarter and faster
He lost 35 pounds between high school b-ball and Loyola freshman season and firmed up the frame. He really looked like a different person. If he continues to work that hard and remains disciplined he is going to take another big step and absolutely dominate the MVC. The combination of Custer staying and Krutwig developing is a huge road block to ISU’s NCAA chances next year.

Plz point out examples of berating. This forum is for ISU Sports to be discussed and players are part of that discussion when they choose to put on that redbird uniform. Players receive praise and are subject to criticism too. Find me a college sports forum that does not discuss players.

It happens. Bender went from ISU to Washington after taking the Birds to the NIT. His sole NCAA was by getting to host the last MVC tourney held on campus and not St. Louis three seasons earlier. He never even had a 20-win season.

Bender didn't take a team to NIT. NCAA appearance first year, the 5-win juggernaut his second, back to back MVC regular season titles his 3rd and 4th seasons, 19 wins each year. No NIT invite though. Sorry if I come off smartass'ery.

Unless Custer is using the grad transfer, he's already transferred from Iowa St. He wouldn't be able to transfer again and sit a second year, right?

ChiRedbirdFan...you're as knowledgeable and invested as they come. Not a jack wagon mouth-spewer, but a terrific fan with more skin in the game than most of us here. You want examples of berating?? Like, really?? I've seen a sht-ton of berating from this forum. Criticizing is one thing and that's fair game if a player accepts a scholarship and throws on the uniform. Hek I've been banging on our best player for his production of turnover lollipops.

But plenty of berating here. The reasonable voices, including you, call 'em out, though.

Wait 'til next year, Redbird fans!

We were arguably the most talented team in the league this year (in a rebuilding year), but were riddled with injuries, learning curves, and close losses. Two of our most important puzzle pieces didn't even play. Coach Muller returns each and every player. All is well, folks. Not just for a regular season and tournament championship, but also a run at an at-large bid. It will be a special year!

2018-19 Wish List

1. Everyone to return. Milik, Madison, Phil, Key, Bruninga, EC, Coach Muller--all of 'em!

2. Not sure if Rey I is the answer, but we need a big body post type to complement Fayne' s game. David is nice in certain situations, but we need SIZE and toughness. A guy like Dimna Odiakusa would make everybody better on this team. A grad transfer would be a good bet--maybe the 6'9" 250+ guy from Colorado?

3. Milik and Phil in the Hi-Lo. As others have mentioned, our offense stalls when MY becomes a point forward. Dan seems resolute in believing in "positionless" basketball, but our greatest offensive games occurred when Phil and Milik worked in tandem down low. Both would receive the ball no more than 7 feet from the hoop.

4. More bobbleheads available for purchase. Want to know what would increase attendance for a late-December exhibition with Quincy? Me either, but I know a Matt Hein or Dick Leudke bobble certainly wouldn't hurt.

5. Three 1st Team MVC guys in Key, MY, and PF.

6. Ditch this year's season-long belief that each and every game is just a tuneup for Arch Madness. That's bottom feeder thinking and we should be above it.

Yup he would use grad transfer in this scenario

I agree with your perspective but like you said criticizing basketball play is fair game. Making fun of the player personally (beyond basketball) is a different deal. I have not read a lot of personal attacks where basketball skills/play was not involved.

So your're a 19 year old kid and your dream comes true. You get a scholarship to play basketball. You get to your new school and settle in. It's now home to you. You do everything your coach asks. Everything your professors ask. You go balls out in everything you do. You get better on the court. Even earn playing time. Your girlfriend is here. Your buddies. You buy in. Redbirds for life!!! And yet, after all of the blood sweat and tears, some grown ass men hiding behind screen names continually ask that your life be yanked out from under you. Almost on a daily basis. You are a wasted scholarship. To me that kid is being berated.
All in the name of sports right?
