I concur with you. YIKES, SOAP BOX AHEAD! If no energy to read, believe me I understand. I just don't know how we find a sweet spot when the cookie batter is sand and rabbit pellets. It's a silent auction, highest bidder wins.

It's the way of this athletics world now, but we might as well head on over to Big Al's because instead of getting "it" the old fashioned way, we're gonna have to pay for "it." And the sex isn't meaningful. It's a mere manipulative transaction.

I don't know how in the world a guy like Pedon, or any other coach outside of the top 40, navigates this and creates a cultured, winning program. It's not a bitchfest, it's trying to figure it out. **And outside of a multiple multi million dollar collective...YEAR IN/YEAR OUT...I don't see it happening.** And this only serves men's basketball!!! What about our other athletic programs on both sides? What about our University as as whole?? More on that in a sec...

You ever had anyone ask you for something and they wouldn't leave you alone and it almost resorted to constant drumbeat begging over an extended period of time? Yeah, me neither but imagine the scenario. Please please puhhhllleeeeeeeeaaaaaaase help us. Daddy will you buy me a car? Daddy please. Oh please Daddy. Yes I'll buy you a car. But please Daddy, buy me a car. Please. Please. Months later...please Daddy. Finally Daddy is so irritated that he flips out at the constant badgering and the car is no more. F*%! THE CAR!

The 'fundraising' will be nonstop begging. And this particular fundraising is for the prostitutes...errr, student athletes...errr, athletes. (Oh whoa dangerous question: who are the pimps??? Yikes.) Not any other university endeavors - such as creating an engineering program or an endowment program that serves lesser privileged student candidates to our enrollment. That's how anyone in our shoes will have to compete.

Sincere question, practically speaking...do any of you see any other way in being competitive? (outside of pimpdaddy NCAA evenly distributing "dividends" to all schools) Any thoughts?

And if we do strike it lucky and are competitive over the course of ONE year, how do you maintain it? It's seems to me that players will be dipping and diving, nevertheless. Coaches are on the arm, too.. Culture is OUT the window.

Silent auction, highest bidder, no reserves.

*PS. I don't blame the athletes directly. They're being taught what to do by this sideways marketplace and how do you turn down mo' money mo' money mo' money?

And AGGIE, yes your Dad had good advice. I'd like to hang with that guy. But all of a sudden WarGames is in my head.

It seems players leaving for greener pastures are no different than the coach exiting before his contract is fulfilled. The lone difference is that a player's contract is year to year. Coaches typically have years remaining on their contract. If players are exiting your program for the portal...I am guessing that's because they have performed at a level that has exceeded your program. If you can have some success...players might be more willing to stay where they are. As long as you can continue recruiting 1-2 year players, the program should be fine. It's what the coach signed up for when they signed their contract. Everyone in the Valley is on the same playing field. Other coaches are succeeding with the same rules. We are now known as JUCO basketball.

To be fair every school is JUCO just the P6 have bigger budgets. Wisconsin for instance has lost a lot. Illinois turns Dain Dainja from lazy into a serviceable and good true 5 then he bolts and is visiting Memphis the next day. Yes, it’s harder for us to keep talent we develop, but we are looking to steal from guys that didn’t get minutes they wanted. Or we steal from those below us (low major, D2/D3, NAIA. It is what it is.

It’s harder for us to get known talent! A school like Illinois can focus on kids with stats. We have to hit the power ball because the program has been let slide for 12 years. The example is 2 ppg average vs 15 ppg and 3 assist.

Basically. I’ve long said it, but about any school is one good hire from being relevant and getting invested in. Hell who wouldve guessed Indian State selling out and having guys on the Pat McAfee show even 5 years ago?

In this example though, Dainja averaged 21 minutes 2 seasons ago for the Illini and only 11 minutes a game this past season. His bolting seems more like playing time reduction.

Foster had all the minutes and more here.

Valid points all. But I would certainly take Indiana States season over ours (for the last ten years). My overall point is that we as a fan base have become used to failure and accept it. Every season we renew our season tickets and expect improvement. But there is no improvement.
I Like this post. Agree 100 percent that ISU sports culture/community is one that is comfortable with mediocre results and status quo.

You can still hang with him. He is 98 and resides at St. Clara’s manor in Lincoln. His mind isn’t as sharp as it used to be. Ask him about “the war”. He is a WW2 European theater infantryman combat veteran. Carried a BAR fought in the Buldge and he has no diplomacy. Farmed the hard way but was successful at it. Ask for the WW2 veteran at the front desk they will introduce you. Several of the RNs are former military and they just love him. We used to take him to Redbird to watch games. He was always amazed at the 6’7” forwards that would get knocked down and get right back up. “That’s an awful big guy to get up”. He liked his basketball. His favorite sport is baseball. The bad part is he has buried all his friends, Army buddies, and lots of his friends kids. Besides telling us to quit the bitching and figure it out. He would also add if the world is not coming to an end how important is it really? He would finally add it has always been about the money and always in the end be about the money, unfortunately.

Nice sermon! I concur.

Gig work and WFH has changed the workforce attitude. That and corporations taking away pensions and such, leaving few a reason to feel loyalty to anyplace. That mindset is gone. These guys ( no more they’re just kids) are doing what most any person would do, grabbing what they can while they can. You never used to see bench clearing crawls to the portal after a coaching change, or success. Or mediocrity. Or failure. But it’s the norm now. John Doe has the upper hand! They all play for the name on the back of the jerseys now.

Speaking of rabbit pellets, at Mitsubishi years ago a guy kept candy in his rolling repair toolbox. Someone kept pilfering it. He put rabbit pellets in a baggie with powdered sugar. The thief fell for the trap. But, the tables turned when the thief complained and the pellet depositor got in trouble, not the snacker.

The only possible solution is to say “F you” to the NCAA. Let them create 2 or 3 mega conferences of blue bloods and the rest of the schools can create a whole new organization that harkens back to the good ole’ days.
The new basketball league would probably have 275 schools.
Do away with conference tournaments and give the auto bid to the regular season winner.
Leave room for a few at large bids.
Etc.

Schertz did it faster and flashier, but Muller had us as relevant in 2017, and we made a few NITs and played on Sunday in 2015 and 2018, as well.

The cliff we fell off afterwards was steep, but even in decline he could still recruit; just look at how many of his players started in tourney teams after leaving us. Reeves and Horne…what might have been.

Maybe it’s our turn to strike portal magic around JK this year and we take by storm a Valley in flux…

Again, you might be right for a season or two. ISU hung on to Muller a few years too long. We treat an NIT first round exit like it’s an NCAA. I don’t want to rehash old wounds- but Muller did nothing to deserve a lengthy extension. If so- our priorities are messed up!

I don't necessarily blame them for that since the NCAA has kicked the door wide open to allow them to do it. I don't like it, but it's the world we reside in, and yes Quinn, it's going to kill interest in the college game.
I don't blame them either really, I mean, in today's completely F'd up world...go get what you can while you can. I get that. But to the last part of your sentence, this is one of the issues...it's become a victim of its own creation, and in very short order. That's why the NC-double a$$holes are popping up new tournaments, new TV packages, new postseason systems, yadda yadda yadda, because they know that interest in the college game is starting to wane, at least in some markets. Attendance is down, ratings aren't as high on some channels/markets, people are walking away because they used to love the COLLEGE game, but now the college game is just another pro game. So the NCAA and all the big bucks decision makers are faux-scrambling as they count their coins.

I also worry that we're a step behind on the portal game and NIL. You have kids now demanding million-dollar deals FFS. Granted, those are at big P5 schools with 50x our budget and fanbase, but that's the kind of cesspool this has turned into, almost overnight. The more buzz NIL gets, the more trendy it becomes.

Just call scholarships what they are: 1 year deals with an opt out. It's a professional setup. Some have argued, well gee, if coaches can leave when they want, why cant players? Simple. It's because until now, coaches were in their chosen profession. It is their job. Players used to be student-athletes, which meant their "job" was to get an education and a degree and play a sport in the process. Now that's all changed.

We don't have the cash to pour into NIL, and because of a lack of sustained success despite some big flashes in the pan, and no NCAA tourney in 26 years, we don't have the deep pocketed or interested fanbase to pony up the dough to lure talent with big NIL bucks. And that's what it is going to take, sadly. Can we get lucky and hit a few home runs in the portal and flip this thing quick? Sure we can. Would 1-2 trips to the dance help us out to become more of a destination for good portal players to sustain that success? Absotively! But until we do it...

And, they should. The universities have been making a killing on their backs for decades. Does it suck for a university like ISU? Of course, but you cant be annoyed with the kids.

This is why Pedon needs to have an eye for the kid that exits that P5 program that can step in and help immediately! It seems the P5 is more focused on poaching transfers than looking at High School kids, Jucos and maintaining their own solid players. We only need to win the Valley Tournament to get to the dance. That has to be our focus for now. If we can get back to respectability we can then focus on becoming a mid major power!
