Two things:

MLB doesn’t have a salary cap.

They’re calling NC State a Cinderella team. Just cuz a team is a low seed doesn’t make them a Cinderella in the traditional sense, especially if they’re from a blue-blood conference. Of course, Cinderella was also a blue-blood since her father was noble. So maybe they’re right and really the others are just upstarts. At least that’s how I think the P5 see it.
Yeah, brain fart on the blanket statement of pro sports having a salary cap. My mind was primarily focused on basketball. MLB's luxury tax has penalties but it still allows major markets to outbid in free agency to some degree. The one thing that pro sports do have is a draft and contracts so teams can't go out and outbid whoever they want coming into the league each year, like colleges now can.

Very good point about Cinderella being a blue blood. So true Cinderella's would be teams like NC State, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, DePaul, etc.

Baseball does have a luxury tax that's designed to control salaries. A few teams don't care but the Cubs sure do.

I think they are calling NC State a Cinderella team, because they had to win 5 games in 5 days in the ACC tourney just to get into the Big Dance. One of which was against VA, where they were down 6 points with :50 to go, and need to hit a prayer trey at the buzzer, just to send the game into OT.

The other thing about pro sports is the salary cap so it creates an equal playing field. Then, the differences come down to fan bases, ownership/leadership and geography plays a role in where athletes want to live.

The current college landscape sucks in a lot of ways, especially for mid major programs like Illinois State. We become feeder programs for the highest bidders. It's a true paradox for me because as much as it sucks, I equally support athletes being able to earn as much as they can and feel they should have always had that right.

My love of the game, including college hasn't changed much. I'm enjoying this tournament as much as any previous year and love the storylines. UConn is my new adopted bandwagon team. I love the culture that Danny Hurley has built and how they play. I especially loved how they destroyed Illinois. They are an elite program and I love how they have built their program with players that fit a certain culture, not based on the most talent but based on what will build team chemistry.

I'm also grateful that my new "hometown" team is San Diego State because I get to cheer for a non power 5 school that is playing above expectations for the size of program they are. San Diego State would be a great job for a coaching staff because there isn't near the pressure to win compared to bigger programs and San Diego County has 4 million population with no professional NBA or NFL team so they are the only game in town for basketball fans. Living here, it's a great place to recruit to as it's the best climate in the continental US.
MLBPA understood that endless free agency for all was bad for business and actually helped implement the initial CBA and its successors.

The NCAA could mandate 2-year commitments from athletes to a school - and vice versa; perhaps make exceptions for grad transfers. Then at least the Valley’s all-newcomer team wouldn’t be pillaged on an annual basis.

I love what NC State has done, but calling them a Cinderella fits about as well as the genuine article’s glass slipper on the feet of her stepsisters.

They are a very important step up the food chain from the true Cinderellas in that they get to enjoy a DJ Horne at his peak; this merits instant disqualification from Cinderella consideration.

If we keep heading down this path, eventually the auto-bids go away and a 14-seed that went 8-12 in the B16 and lost on a weekday in the conference tourney will jump up and bite someone. Cool story, I guess, but don’t dare call them a Cinderella.

Plus hard to call a team that won the acc conference tourney 2 weeks ago a Cinderella

I'm no expert on the story of Cinderella however after a quick search, she was born into a wealthy family but was left with her stepmother.

In the context of this season, NC State had zero chance to make the NCAA tournament if they didn't win the ACC tournament as the 10th seed. They won 5 games in 5 days.

I understand the perspective of not calling them a Cinderella because they are from a major conference (but Cinderella was't poor but born into a wealthy family and kind of forgotten about, like the lower tier programs in major conferences).

Regardless of how you choose to label them, they're an awesome story in this year's tournament and prior to conference tournament, they weren't even close to being considered an at large bid. In that respect, their run is more of a shock than San Diego State making the national championship last year, as they were ranked between 17th and 33rd throughout the entire season leading up to the NCAA tournament and would have easily been an at large bid.

Pretty much the whole central
Lots depends on your local media contract and maybe the most important, how much your billionaire owner wants to win or just get the tax breaks

The goal for most small market teams is to build a roster to get you to 85-87 wins. Enough to make the playoffs and take a chance you get hot at the right time. Also enough for owners to point to the playoffs as a “win” for the org, generating fan interest and ticket sales, while also generating big profits. So spending is tightly controlled. Spend enough to make it look like you care about winning it all, but in reality you’re only focused on being just good enough that fans still come to games.
