Riffing off what Mel and Cubird have said. The main reason this good coach and good person was fired is because they did not make The Tournament. Leonard said it himself. I hate it for Mullins, but I understand it and I respect that clear line in the sand.

So whaddya think? In our league, every coach is hired to get the team to The Dance. What's the line? 3 years, 4 years, 5 years? Is that fair? What if you run a successful program but don't achieve a NCAA bid?
If that’s the case, the Valley is going to constantly churn through coaches. The ones who Dance immediately get poached by P5s, while the ones who don’t are shown the door after 3-4 years.

Adding Murray and Belmont may have exacerbated this if Indiana State gets left out, as there will now be eleven disgruntled fan bases at the end of every season.

In thinking that adding the best of the OVC would up the conference’s profile, The Valley more likely created the best one-bid league possible.

I think SIU is more unique. They, like us, are sick of not being a relevant program. Them even more so after their 00s success. Now you look at Domask and Jones tearing up the B1G. SIU had one of the best scorers in the country this year. Oh and all 3 played together last year with middling success. I get the frustration.

They have been churning through coaches, at least seven from the Pedon hire year forward:

2006-2007
Northern Iowa

2015-2016
Bradley

2018-2019
Drake

2019-2020
Belmont

2021-2022
Indiana State

2022-2023
Evansville, Illinois State, Murray State

2023-2024
Valparaiso

2024-2025
Illinois-Chicago, Missouri State, Southern Illinois

Pedon is tied for sixth in terms of longevity ... with just two season under his belt.

and I think there is a fair shot that Drake and Indiana State will also be looking for the other (i.e. successful program coach being poached) reason.

Pedon seems too nice a guy to get that hate/hate going again (Firey Italian/Norfolk St. aside); can we bring Dan back as a celebrity coach just once for poops & giggles?
Figure the fanbase will handle the hatred part of it. For what it's worth, Marshall was the name I was told as well.

Disagree on the first point. Marshall will fight with anyone, including nice guys. I could see him QUICKLY getting under Ryan's skin, and vice versa. And personally I'd love to see him back in The Valley...we need some Donewald/Versace distaste on each side in this league. ISU will never like Marshall or at least we'd better not. He is one hek of a good coach, though.

On the 2nd, yep I'd like to see them go at it. Dan would win in an honest fight. Marshmallow would take a knife out and shank you to end it, though.

I won't like Marshall because he beat us so often, but I'll absolutely never respected him for the way he treated his players and coaches. I've seen a lot of coaches and their personalities come through Redbird in my time sitting right behind the visiting bench, and 3G was the only one I've ever seen tell his assistant coaches to Shut the F and sit down when they would try to bring something to his attention.

ISU is way too “nice”. Or as us Cardinals say “lovable losers those cub fans”. But that culture may be changing but not Normal’s culture. ISU should be the third highest sports ticket in the state behind the 2 big whatever schools. That is what should be demanded by fans and boosters and the university itself. Unfortunately I fear ISU has too much of a “teacher college” mentality, so here is your participation trophy.
Well said; and true. We just settle for mediocrity. Season ticket holders have got to start demanding more.

For those hearing Marshall, what is the track record of those sources?

Everyone hates Marshall, but everything meant more when he was coaching. Redbird Arena was electrifying and I remember at least 2 games sold out. Say what you want about Marshall, but it’ll create memories and a rivalry-of-the-world feel.
